  1. Don't get me wrong, I love Ronnie as much as the next Cubs fan, but with the grunts/screams of anguish/cries of joy on a 50000 watt transmitter, we have no room to talk about another team's announcers doing much the same thing after an amazingly improbable win. That team hasn't had much to celebrate since "We Are Family", let 'em enjoy that bone - I'm happy for them.
  2. Michaels also started the 9th inning rally with a walk - sure, he deserves a go with my hypothetical gf too.
  3. Holy crap what a ballbreaker for the Cards.
  4. I say the Bucs put up a stick here to keep the game going.
  5. Any word on his rehab? I know its only been a week, but I still am really pulling for him to be back before september. Here's what AZ Phil said today (he also gives a better explanation on how the Cubs are going about saving Angel's option year): Gooz could be the new Marmol toward the end of the season while the old Marmol gets some much needed rest. Then the old Marmol could be the new Marmol again during the playoffs and strike out everyone and not walk people. That would be good. =D> I like it. As long as we're fantasizing, my fave is Wood with a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 9th, game 7 of the NLCS vs Stl, after coming in to pitch the top half and striking out the side. That also would be good.
  6. Phew. Reminds me of the game vs Colorado last year, after Howry blew a big lead and nearly got jumped by an idiot.
  7. It was hilarious seeing Rich get hitting lessons from Z in the dugout after he K'ed.
  8. Absolutely agree. btw, did anyone notice the camera briefly cut to Wood in the dugout when Marmol started getting into trouble? Wood seemed to look annoyed or bothered by the blister, then disappeared into clubhouse.
  9. Only 1 team in baseball w/a winning pct > 0.600 =D> Keep it up today Cubs!
  10. man i love zerimar thanks AF!
  11. Yes, I get the 'buck stops here' kind of argument. Fair enough. It pretty much boils down to this hypothetical dugout conversation after watching Marquis walk two guys in the 7th: Lou: Get Marmol up. Larry: Ok. Larry's ideal answer: Lou, this will be the 3rd day in the row and this isn't a high leverage situation, how bout we get Michael up instead? I would expect any pitching coach to monitor his arms and assist his manager in spreading the bullpen load where it needs to be spread, even if it conflicts with the manager's initial choice of guys to put in the ballgame. I suppose we'll never know if Larry actually is doing this but Lou is overriding him.
  12. Lou decides what relievers are used. Of course he has the final say, but my point is that if Piniella delegates bullpen decisions to his pitching coach moreso than most managers, and I've read plenty to suggest that's true, then shouldn't Rothschild bear some of the blame for abusive usage patterns? Part of the reason I ask is because I recall Rothschild coming under fire years ago (albeit in the blogosphere & misc sports commentary) for being partially culpable for Dusty's pitcher abuse. The counterargument then was that Dusty never ceded much control to Rothschild and didn't consult with him or rely on him to monitor pitchers' health as much as he should have. This came as some relief to those who were worried when Piniella hired Rothschild, if Rothschild really wasn't to blame at all for the PAPs racked up during the Dusty years. Just was curious more than anything why no one even mentions Rothschild being complicit, at least, in Marmol's abuse, and I tend to agree with everyone his usage pattern has been terrible this year.
  13. Slightly off-topic here to ask this, but since it came up: Why does everyone automatically blame Lou for trotting out Marmol too much? I know the buck stops with the skipper, but I was under the impression he delegated most bullpen decisions to Larry. Not true?
  14. Keep it simple, just a We Got Harden t-shirt w/same lettering & color as the '98 shirt, but add "(and we STILL got Wood)" in smaller type beneath. But I can't imagine anyone except unmarried dudes under 25 wearing it.
  15. Dempster on the Harden acquisition: "Finally, someone who speaks my language. We're gonna set up some hockey nets in the clubhouse". :D
  16. Barrett hopes to have facial surgery soon http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AnJ1k441PiLVDNcUiv1Z3GyFCLcF?slug=ap-padres-barrett&prov=ap&type=lgns
  17. He left the board/was kicked out. Not too sure, but there is a long story behind it. That really is too bad, Hoops was one of my favorite posters. I had been wondering what happened to him. No idea what this long story is, but would I be way off if I suspected Meph was involved somehow?
  18. Good times ... I love the Pat & Ron call. Thanks for posting Aramis Fan. That game put them 2.5 games up in first but it was all downhill from there unfortunately. People tend to forget the 2001 division race, it sort of gets overshadowed by 1998 and 2003. The Cubs had a very decent bullpen that year, and they had just filled a big hole at 1B (at least on paper) with the McGriff trade. This win against the Rockies put them 17 games over 500. They were not even close to 17 games over 500 on Aug 7 in 1998, 2003, 2004 nor 2007.
  19. Not true! His teammates liked him except for Jeff Kent. Is that an indictment? I have spent some quality time with a former SF Giants coach and what you say simply isn't true. Yeah that particular statement was totally unnecessary and irrelevant to the rest of my argument, even if it were true. My only assertion is that failing to sign Bonds is simply good business. For a GM to risk alienating a good chunk of the fan base and subjecting the rest of the team to the inevitable media frenzy ... it simply isn't worth what kind of numbers Bonds *might* put up. And expecting anywhere near 1000 OPS really is a stretch, all things considered.
  20. Yeah that stat is completely bogus. They scheduled the parade through the streets of downtown Chicago, at lunchtime, on a business day. People were walking to / from lunch when a parade happened by, and they contributed to the 1.75M headcount? Utterly ridiculous.
  21. I like this post because of its truth and the name of the poster. I like this post because of the name & avatar pic. We need more straight Shooters and Voices of Reason around here.
  22. Dirty, yeah definitely. Quick? Not since the late 90's.
  23. Smart ones. You know what else is a "clubhouse cancer?" Losing. Touche. I definitely agree that winning begets chemistry, not other way around. That doesn't take away from all the cons against signing him even if you expect to see 900-1000 OPS, which is by no means guaranteed if he's off the clear. Have there been any accounts of Barry working out to stay in shape? I'm not asking rhetorically, I want to know. Does he really expect to get an offer?
