  1. Amen! Seriously, what's so frustrating about this? They were never in it at all. The system of the playoffs is still that the hottest team, not the best team wins first round matchups. Anyone really believe the Rockies were the best team in the NL last yr? 2003 was especially excruciating because the Cubs used the "hot team card" to eliminate the Braves who won 101 games. We all forget that? Then they overcame a 0-1 deficit to take a 3-1 lead with Zambrano, Prior, and Wood coming up. That my friends was heartbreak. Yeah same here - I'm disappointed but the pain isn't even CLOSE to the pain I felt in '03, or even '04. People tend to forget how high the expectations were in '04, at least as high as this year. But the '03 pain is off the charts compared to the '07 and '08 sweeps. I really think the LDS ought to be seven games, and get rid of the 2-3 day layoff/buildup between the end of the LCS and the beginning of the WS. A crazier idea that gets floated every now and then for the 5-game format is to have the top team play game 1 on the road and then come home for the rest of the series. Maybe split gate receipts evenly for game 4 if the series gets that far, to compensate the club that lost a home game.
  2. I'm relatively optimistic too, but this is silly. Three game losing streaks are irrelevant; at this point it's about avoiding a one game losing streak. I'd say we have about a 27-28% chance of bringing the series back to Chicago, and I really like our chances in that scenario.
  3. ARGH!!! I keep hearing about tickets sporadically on sale at cubs.com ticketing, and everytime I go there - nada. I haven't been teased this much since high school, when a few cheerleaders would choose to wear the tightest shortest shorts possible within sight of our football drills. Edit: screw it, I'm going to gougers.com - I mean stubhub.com - can't take it anymore.
  4. "There's a drive that might be outta here! It might be, it could be ... IT IS!! A HOMERUN. ____ ___!!!" (everyone should be able to fill in the blanks)
  5. Some funny Aramabomb posts over at brewerfan.net right now ...
  6. From Professor Kaat: http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/1283161.html?page=3 About Kerry's breaking pitch - I don't know what he would call it these days but I'd like to see him bring back that circa-1998 wiffleball slurve for the playoffs.
  7. I remember Mulholland overthrowing Grace's head in the Astrodome too. I think it was in extra innings. Mystery solved: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU199808150.shtml and the game I referenced just ten days after: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CIN/CIN199808250.shtml So well before the BB game but down the stretch, as SSR said. Terry apparently had problems throwing the ball to a base that month. [Edit: beaten by slugger]
  8. I think you're thinking of a game earlier in the year vs Cincy. Cubs came back from 5 runs down to take the lead, only to give it back when Mulholland threw away an easy DP ball into CF. They did lose in Houston after the BB game, and Mulholland started one of those games, but he didnt have a throwing error. I remember watching that Cincy game in a bar and seeing Mulholland throw it away (distinctly remember the entire bar just gasping in disbelief).
  9. I know what you're referring to, but game 6 was extended agony. For a single moment, I can't decide between Brant Brown and Victor Diaz. Perfect comparison. I can't decide either. I assumed the Cubs were dead after the BB game with only four games left. Thank God Neifi saved us.
  10. Ties. Thanks that makes sense - I see now that is mentioned at the bottom.
  11. In the LF bleachers, silently screaming along with Ronny. Between the Brewers comeback, the wild card race and the HR race - Sammy hit two that day - that was one of the wildest games I've ever seen, just absolute hysteria in the bleachers. Wow, ten years. Yikes. Incidentally, the winning pitcher in that game was also the winning pitcher in the mother of all "ohh noo!! nooooo!!!!" moments in Cub history, and the losing pitcher in a painful loss earlier this year (freakin Skip Schumaker): http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN200805020.shtml
  12. Quick question: can anyone explain why the BP postseason odds report, which claims to simulate the rest of the season a million times, displays probabilities to the 5th decimal? Seems to me they'd have to go to ten million simulations for that last digit to be significant ... am I missing something?
  13. Read this morning that Edmonds made sure Kerry got the ball after the last out - really cool.
  14. Hold on, I think Barry Larkin just went yard ...
  15. My thought exactly - funny to see a $17M / yr athlete who is really just a little kid at heart. It's hilarious watching him between innings playing with the LF bleacher bums (and sometimes during innings, ala Sammy).
  16. According to fangraphs, the Cubs odds of winning were 500 to 1 after the 2nd out in the ninth with no one on. Five hundred to one.
  17. That link takes you to Eddie's performance at the Auditorium - just awesome, especially the 2nd verse. In a perfect world that would replace Go Cubs Go as the victory song.
  18. holy crap - good call nostradamus
  19. http://d.yimg.com/a/p/sp/tools/med/2008/09/ipt/1221446234.jpg Astros :flame: Z
  20. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylt=Ak1YjzBUS9tHTi6QagQ9.4ERvLYF?gid=280911124&prov=ap Foul out, infield single, flyout - I doubt Lilly was impressed by Lopez either.
  21. I wonder if he'll still sprinkle his Cub articles with 'Tribsters', along with his other usual baseball-savvy words/phrases like 'Cubdom', 'Bartman', '100 years', '5 outs from the World Series', 'jinx/curse/goat'.
  22. >> Multiple sources tell Chi-ball ... >> [Ricketts] is not only sufficient, but sources believe ... >> It is a believed by these sources that Zell has used Cuban all along... >> The source went on to say that LOL @ unqualified "sources". Sources could mean talking w/some buddies over some brewskies.
