  1. I don't understand why the phrase "selling high" is even entering the conversation. If Hendry had really "sold high" he would have gotten high value in return, by definition. He has practically admitted this is a salary dump coupled with the stupid LH bat preoccupation. That is why the haul sucks.
  2. ...So let's root root root for the BLACK-HAWKS! If they don't win it's a shame For it's .. uhh ... TEN, TWENTY, THIRTY shots on goal at the old... puck... game! The adaptation needs work. "LET'S SCORE SOME GOALS, EH!!" (but only if the Hawks are down)
  3. The hypothetical Fangraphs chart of this deal is even crazier than the Roberts chart last year.
  4. This is what I've felt all along too, and I can't help but wonder if 'limiting temptation' is as far as it goes. Budget issues aside (and I certainly agree budget concerns are valid) there was an odd finality in Hendry's tone after the exclusive negotiation period had ended. The announcement was made that Wood would not be returning, but then Kerry surprised everyone by saying he would have accepted a one-year deal. Now if the Cubs offer arbitration and Wood accepts, they still would have til Feb to work out a deal, before the arbitration hearings. That is more than enough time for both sides to hammer out a mutually agreeable deal, making Hendry's annoucement way too premature. Because I'm clueless on stuff like this, can anyone explain the legalities of Hendry privately asking Wood to not accept arb if it were offered, so the Cubs can get the compensatory picks?
  5. I wouldn't be surprised, only depressed. Can someone tell me please: Why would the Cubs be disincented to offer arby? Is someone (who is theoretically sober) really thinking that Wood isn't worth the likely arb-awarded $?
  6. I've been wondering about just this scenario since the whole "Kerry is gone" story broke. It seems remote that Kerry would be back, accepting a 1 yr deal with the Cubs, but certainly not impossible :beg:
  7. i knew i should have put that in green (see wekse's reply)
  8. Seeing Woody win a WS would be even more bittersweet than that vid of his game 7 HR.
  9. The Red Sox, Yankees, and Tigers apparently all have interest in her. Should be fun to see how she does. I think "Red Sox Yankees & Tigers are interested" was writer embellishment, and the joke isn't particularly well phrased or funny. But it's an amazing story; looking forward to seeing her pitch.
  10. Really valuable contribution to the thread. Nice try but thanks for playing.
  11. My sentiment exactly.
  12. Thanks a lot - reading it now.
  13. Maybe, mostly for his arm, but it's close. That friggin hop just annoys the crap out of me. Abreu's arm is worse, and he's even more scared of the wall than Soriano is. By the way, don't most defensive metrics have Soriano as a better than average LF? I've been meaning to ask SSR for a link - I'd like to read more about defense metrics. Sori still has decent footspeed and a cannon, but his route-taking sucks.
  14. Maybe, mostly for his arm, but it's close. That friggin hop just annoys the crap out of me.
  15. Using a players numbers at Wrigley is an absurd reason to justify going after him, especially if that player is 35 and has been playing in the AL for 2.5 years. Good thing no one here is using his numbers at Wrigley to justify going after him. I threw the stat out there not because I think ballpark splits are so compelling or predictive, but rather because Abreu's Wrigley OPS career split is so conspicuous: highest among all NL ballparks splits. Highest overall is the Cell, 1.233. The guy really must love coming to Chicago. Do we expect a 1129 year out of him if the Cubs sign him? Of course not. Is an 850-900 year terribly unrealistic? I'd take that out of RF next year assuming acceptable defense (which is why I cringe whenever anyone here mentions Dunn or Soriano and RF in the same sentence). ABout MSG_T's point, not that it matters much, but the during the bulk of Abreu's NL time, 1998-2005, the Cubs had a team ERA+ of almost exactly 100 (99.75). Right in the middle of the pack for that period, 3rd behind the Astros & Cards in the NLCentral.
  16. I have no problem with this move if it means Abreu will be patrolling RF next year. I know he's going to be 35, but the guy simply mashes at Wrigley: 1.192 OPS lifetime. He even looks a little like Sammy.
  17. Tiresome, splitting hairs with semantics argument coming in 5..4..3..
  18. Sounds good to me...As long as the salary is reasonable. This is very reasonable. Cubs & Woody have to figure out a way to make this happen, and Wood shouldn't have to give a hometown discount to make it work. He has proven to be reasonably durable (outside of the blister episode) and very effective since returning Aug 2007. Besides the fact that he is the heart & soul of the Cubs, the bullpen simply needs Wood.
  19. care to elaborate? They each have four limbs, have both had major league hits, and are both carbon-based life forms. The first two are true, but re Pujols I'm not so sure about the third. Great analysis Meph. I have high hopes that Fuku will adapt and improve next year.
  20. :-)) There is great material in there - I don't think a comedy writer could do any better.
  21. And lets them throw 130 pitches in a 13-2 win on three-days rest following a 120-pitch effort. The colts are the colts dude.
  22. As long as we're putting up bad parodies, here's one sent to me by a trashtalking Sox fan friend of mine (the cheer/beer couplet is pretty weak). I didn't mind this much because I kind of hate Go Cubs Go. I love what it symbolizes, of course, but hate the crappy little ditty itself. Woe Cubs woe, Woe Cubs woe-oh-ohh Hey Chicago let’s all sing, Cubs will never win a thing. They got the power they got the speed To be the best in the National League Then Wrigley Field became Cubbie hell, But there's good baseball at the Cell. Woe Cubs woe, Woe Cubs woe-oh-ohh Hey Chicago let’s all rhyme The Cubs are booking their tee time. When the pressure’s on and the chips are down, Cubs will flub like Bozo the Clown. All Cub fans crave something to cheer, Cuz all they have is lukewarm beer. They’re singing: Woe Cubs woe, Woe Cubs woe-oh-ohh Hey Chicago, well whaddya know! Cubs are gonna fail to show.
  23. '85 is still even higher than '03 for me. I assume you mean 84? 85 was more disappointing than 2001 for me - the Cubs were on top til all five of their starters went on the DL.
