  1. I was thinking the Cubs need to get Die Hard and Dubois back, bring Sing and Dope up and put Restovich on the roster. it may not be the all Dave Kingman team in production, but it would be as close as it comes in terms of looks. dems some big boys.
  2. Just like Welly is getting hammered by the A's. :( how bad is it at this point?
  3. I don't think I am the only one who had a part of me hoping Grissom would try to stretch yesterday's gapper into a triple and tweak the hammy in the process. oh the evils envoked due to the presence of Dusty Baker. anyone else else get the feeling that Hendry and Baker made a deal? Baker agreed to start Cedeno and Murton as long as Hendry agreed to fill out the roster with Baker's "type of guys."
  4. will anyone doing pbp? any updates that can be posted is appreciated.
  5. exactly. if they had Wood pitching with a sore knee and later on the knee became a problem, or if they worked Prior like they have in the past and something went wrong, the same people who are crucifying the Cubs now would be on here saying "why didn't they take care of Wood's knee in ST" and "why didn't they handle Prior differently this year after all the problems he had in ST 2004 and 05?"
  6. nobody gets mad when Stone gives an opinion. it is the way he gives it that people get mad about. It just seems odd to me that people get so worked up about the tone of the message as opposed to the message itself. Kerry could be done as a pitcher sooner rather than later if he fails to change. Who cares if he says something about car salesman? The message still stands. There is something with Kerry's pitching that is causing him to get injured frequently, he and the Cubs need to find what it is and fix it. And when Prior is being babied this late into the spring, as he is, then everything is not hunky dory, no matter how much they pretend it is. just trying to help you understand why people get mad at him. surely you can understand this coming from me as I am the poster child around here for people getting mad at the tone of the message and forgetting the content.

  8. $24 an hour is one way to look at it. another is that they are being paid peanuts for leaving their homes and going to live in dingy motel rooms and be away from their families for five months at a time, treated like dirt by the players and the leagues. the guy I know won't even try to get insurance for his kid because he's afraid them knowing he had a kid would hurt his chances of moving up (his baby's momma has insurance for the kid). it would be one thing if they were moonlighting as umpires like in a softball league, but these umpires bounce around just like the major league umps do. never in the same town more than a few nights, only with about one week off for the enitre season. the good ones can't even take roots in the region because the next year they may move to a league in a different part of the country.
  9. or, it implies he's worked out real hard, which is fanstastic, but sometimes has consequences, like a creeky knee. Ok, then that implies that Hendry & Baker knew about this all along, it's not a minor thing, they deliberately held it back. We can't have it both ways. Either Hendry & Baker are liars, or Woody's not working out in the offseason. Which is preferable? Does it make sense to you that Woody can't get through an offseason workout program without needing surgery? I mean come on, if that were the case for most people we would need surgery clinics the size of SuperMax prisons. Something is not right. Putting 2 and 2 together, it's not adding up. I really don't get how this is an either/or situation of that sort. exactly what implies that Baker and Hendry knew about this all along? I know there is reason to doubt the veracity of the things that have been said, but it is entirely possible that Wood, realizing he needed to strengthen his legs to improve his mechanics (as Oscar Acosta told him seven years ago), worked out really hard during the off season and caused some minor damage that did not start causing any pain until the last couple of weeks. sometimes it is difficult to put 2 and 2 together when you put unnecessary variables on both sides of the equation. even if his off season workout was no more strenous than usual, people, especially atheletes, get creeky or stiff knees all the time. it's been said time and time again that this surgery isn't really necessary. he could pitch, but they don't want it to be a problem later on. if he were not an athelete, he probably wouldn't be having surgery. so don't begin construction on the supermax out patient facilities just yet. and here here to a successful surgery.
  10. it wouldn't surprise me at all. in fact, it's what I would expect them to do. I don't understand why there is some expectation of veracity. the Cubs are in the business of selling tickets and ad space. all corporations lie and hide the truth to keep selling as much of their product at the highest possible price, yet when it comes to sports teams, people have some unfounded belief that they are entitled to the truth. it's bs and it sucks, but that's the way it is. if you really have a problem with it, come on over to rants sometime and help me rail against corporate america. as for why Wood didn't do the surgery earlier, maybe because it didn't start hurting until now?

  12. re: the sig, I hope Tony enjoys him so much after 200 PAs of .650 OPS that he gives him 200 more.
  13. nobody is saying it would. I don't like the pinstripes and am merely attacking a typical argument for keeping pinstripes, not implying that the uniforms have or had anything to do with the teams' ability to perform.
  14. I thought the exact same thing. I know it's not this simple, but it makes you wonder, he plays OF so he can probably throw, and he plays first so he can handle groundballs. why can't he play third?
  15. the shame about Wellemeyer's performance is we can't just say "oh, well, just a ST game with someone who wouldn't make the team anyway." Wellemeyer was pitching for his trade value today, and it just went right down the tubes.
  16. note to Wellemeyer, they're sitting on the first pitch. for anyone that's listening, was he getting hit hard, or were there some bloops and groundballs with eyes?
  17. I've long called for a color change, as well as losing the pinstripes on the home unis. yes, I know, it's tradition...but it's a losing tradition. nothing good has come of these uniforms, or the circular "C" since they first came on the scene in the mid 50's. Color change, as in complete overhaul like the White Sox in the 90's when they went black and white? The uniforms aren't the reason why they've lost a lot of games, changing them as some sort of effort to create a winner would be kind of pathetic. color change as in back to the navy like suggested by others. did you seriously interpret that as me saying the reason for losing is the uniforms? I don't like the pinstripes. the usual response to that is "it's tradition." my response to that is "yes, a losing tradition, so why keep them." I don't think I implied in any way that the reason the Cubs lose alot of games is the uniforms.

  19. i know what you're saying, that's why i was so upset when jim let andy macphail make the juan pierre trade. please elaborate. was there some indication that MacPhail took the GM reigns back for that trade, or are you just being the trickster?
  20. strange and foreboding. good to see he put Cedeno there instead of furious though.
  21. Thanks Bruce. can anyone do PBP so Bruce can concentrate on the game?
  22. "Scott Eyre who just signed a 3 year, 11 million dollar deal with the Cubs staying in a $98 a night hotel." I remember that when Gary Gaetti came to the Cubs in 98, he lived in a cheap hotel and took the el to Wrigley.
  23. thanks for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic responses re: Angel Pagan
  24. Angel Pagan, minor league OF came from Colorado. He can run fast, and....run really fast to catch fly balls. NRI?
