  1. I think Cox actually had a point this time. Hernandez did blow the original call, and that is what got LoDuca thrown out. While LoDuca was yelling at Hernandez, he spiked the ball down on the ground. When this happened, Smoltz (I think it was Smoltz) took off towards second. So now Atlanta had runners on first and second. The second base umpire made Smoltz go back to 1st despite LoDuca never calling time. I heard the explanation was that at the time of the ejection, it becomes a dead ball. However, I saw the game, and I thought Smoltz was on the base when the ejection occured. I think Cox is a baby too, but I would love to have him in Chicago. JMO.
  2. The Des Moines Register is reporting that Wood will be in Des Moines on the 12th for his second rehab start. Assuming (and God willing) everything goes well with his first start. Unfortunately, I won't be in attendance. I have prior commitments that I can't break. Key word is commitments there because if I only had one, I wouldn't feel bad about breaking it.
  3. I think it was more of a case of Lowe being on rather then anything else. Could Cubs hitters have been more patient? Probably, but sometimes you just get out played, and I think this is what happened last night.
  4. Living in the Des Moines area, I would try 1350 AM. This is the station I listen to. Don't know if it will reach that far, but is worth a shot.
  5. I couple of interesting facts from the Des Moines Register about the I-Cubs: Iowa's pitchers gave up their first homerun after 36 2/3 innings. Iowa's starting pitchers are 3-0 and have a 1.00 ERA after 5 games. They have pitched 27 innings, struck out 21 and walked 7. Anyone really interested in seeing Pie vs. Sheets today. If it were June/July/August I would be there in a second. However, since I am a teacher, my "vacation" doesn't start until after Memorial Day.
  6. Raisin, Where did you get the pitching matchups. I am thinking about going down either Saturday or Sunday. Any idea as to who would be pitching either of those days?
  7. I-Cubs box for those interested. Didn't make it to the game today, but listened on the radio until the 5th :( . Ryu sounded good, and they talked about the potential of the team. Trying to finding pitching matchups for tomorrow's game. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&gid=2006_04_06_albaaa_iowaaa_1&did=t451&sid=t451
  8. As good as a pitcher as Ray Liotta is, I think he is a far better hitter. I watched him in Field of Dreams :D
  9. I posted this in the Exhibition thread, but will do it again here: viewtopic.php?t=30279&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 This was coming from the Des Moines paper (no link-but was printed in the actual newspaper, but not on line). I am GUESSING Valdez goes Friday night, Walrond on Saturday, with Guz on Sunday. If Guz pitches Sunday, he has off Mon, Tues, Wed, Thur, and would be scheduled to pitch on Friday. This could be moved back to Saturday if he is Chicago's pitcher on that day. Hill would be "scheduled" on that day if he pitches after Guz.
  10. I don't think this would really matter, but I don't think Iowa pitched their best pitchers. Again, don't think it would have matterd, but Iowa has a game today agains Illinois State and then play the weekend at Penn State. http://hawkeyesports.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/040406aab.html The I-Cubs took over pitching duties for both teams in the seventh, allowing the Hawkeyes to rest their pitching staff. The local paper has listed a tentative line-up for Thursday: 1B-Sing 2B- Theroit SS- Ojeda 3B- McGehee LF- Restovich CF- Pie RF- Coats C- Soto P- Ryu The other starting pitchers are- Guzman, Hill, Valdes, and Walrond. Relievers- Aardsma, Brownlie, Emanuel, Novoa, O'Malley, Shipman, and Watson.
  11. Fair enough-however with recruiting, you need to start somewhere. Iowa can't recruit with Nebraska, Texas, Florida, etc. I don't see them ever doing that, even if they win the Big 10. The southern schools have an advantage over any northern baseball program. I think Dahm is recruiting an area he knows well, and that is the midwest. Iowa football and basketball have a hard time getting kids from the south and west to come to Iowa. Why would they want to deal with below 0 temperatures and cold weather when they can go somewhere closer to home. Also, keeping in state talent in Iowa will be tough with a program like Nebraska so close. Iowa basketball lost three big time recruits to Kansas. The problem is when prospects leave to go to other schools (Creighton, Minnesota, Illinois, etc) that they can compete with. I also agree that the Big 10 compared to other conferences is not that good, but for Iowa fans to make the Big 10 tournament and finish higher then 9 or 10 brings some life to a program that is dead. I admit I never have met Dahm, but I have actually been hearing them talk about Iowa baseball on sports radio, and I have never heard of that before. Just my 2 cents-
  12. Cubs Minor League Report- Just curious as to why you are not really impressed with Dahm. Facilities there are terrible, yes, but I think he knows he isn't going to get top notch talent across the US, so he focuses on Iowa kids with a few others from the midwest. I agree that they are a long way from making a trip to Omaha, but Dahm turned them from a last place Big 10 team to a middle to upper pack team in the Big 10. I have attended some coaching clinics (coach high school ball) with other people who do not like Dahm as well. Just curious as to why you aren't a fan. I do however think he has done a helluva job getting Iowa baseball back to a "respectable" team in the Big 10.
  13. Does this work... Furcal is fast, has a good glove and bats at the top of the order. :D
  14. I miscounted when I was trying to calculate, so pitching tonight makes sense. Pedro- are you going to the game tonight? I thought about it until I was reminded I volunteered to work a Jr. High track meet at the school I teach at. Stupid, Stupid me. Looks like Iowa is started to get going in the right direction. Dahm has made the program respectable. Do I want to mention he is a Hendry guy... Any idea who is pitching for Iowa on Thursday? I think I may head down after school. I would only miss the first couple of innings...if it is not raining of course. Didn't there used to be a sight that would have the minor league pitchers listed as well and tell who was supposed to be pitching.
  15. Does anyone find it odd that Guzman is pitching tonight? I kind of thought he would throw Thursday in the home opener. Even if he pitches tonight, would he still throw on Thursay? I am guessing not. I thought I read somewhere that they would have him, Hill, or Ryu ready if/when they needed someone to come up. What is everyone else's take?
  16. Thanks Chief and Jaxx! Like I said, I thought they didn't look right, but there were the names of guys we got from the Welly trade, so I thought I would post it. Hope Sing and Pie are in AAA (they should be, but I want to see them play in person) and the pitching staff looks good. Beats watching Jimmy Anderson and other veterans. Chiefs Voice- Do you know if the schedule is updated? When is Peoria playing in Cedar Rapids? Might make a trip over there to watch.
  17. I think you are right, but the new names were confusing me a bit.
  18. I wasn't sure on some of them as well. They have Sing and Dope at West Tenn. I was thinking Sing would be at Iowa. When I player was reassigned to minor league camp, they are assigned to a specific team correct?
  19. These are not final, but this is what I found on the minor league web site. It seems updated because the guys we got from the Welly trade are on teams. Does this look right? Who else will fill out roster spots in AAA? Calvin Murray listed on the I-Cubs roster. Thought he was done playing. If these are incorrect, mods feel free to delete or whatever. 20. I just read the whole thread, and I just thought Chicken Little was the nickname we decided to give Neifi because of his legs. (Note sarcasm...I am really not that stupid)
  21. I think the difference between playing minor league baseball and Jeremy Bloom was that Bloom's money was coming from endorsements which is illegal in the eyes of the NCAA. I think I read somewhere Nike was one of Bloom's sponsors which would cause some problems. I think I read somewhere too, that Tim Dwight, former Iowa football player, had to pay back some of his endorsements from going to the NFL in order to run track at Iowa after the draft. Because these minor league players are making money in a sport different then their NCAA sport and not getting endorsement money, makes it OK to do, I guess.
  22. Is this something that would get better once he gets out of Arizona? I need to read the link provided, but don't have time right now. It sounds as if a lot of the people who have had it or know someone that had it were in Arizona. Obviously the problem is where does he get work in if not in Arizona.
  23. Thanks guys for the help! I looked at all of the sites (except Baseball America). I knew he played in the one game this spring. I read in one of the articles I found on Yahoo that he was one of the top prospects of the Marlins. Thought that was a little off since I never really heard much about him being that highly thought of. I went to elemetary school with Nic, and then went to rival high schools, but played on the same "AAU" team. I haven't talked to him in awhile, but I know that his mom had cancer pretty bad. I'll have to talk to my parents and see if there was anything else. I kind of hope for my sake (not Nic's) that he starts in AAA so he can make a trip to Des Moines. Thanks again, DSM Cub
  24. I went to school with a kid (I guess that is what you can still call him) who was drafted by the Florida Marlins. I did a yahoo search to see what I could find on him. If any of you could post links to good minor league web sites, or post infomation about this guy, it would be greatly appreciated. Last I knew he was with Carolina in AA. Looks like he did well in the Arizona Fall League, and has an outside chance to make the Marlins. Is there a site with updated spring training numbers? I was just wandering what the books/Baseball America were saying about him... I guess you need his name before you can help me... Nic Ungs Thanks in advance for anyone that can help, DSM Cub
  25. A couple of Thanksgivings ago, my cousins and I had a few too many and decided to head "East". The only place open on Thanksgiving was the River Queen. We made our cousin who was only 18 drive, so nobody was harmed during our trip. They let him in the bar too... Back to the story. We were in the bar for maybe 40 minutes before a fight broke out and they kicked everyone out. We then headed over to Mulgrew's for the Chili Dogs. When we got back to the family Thanksgiving, yes, the entire family was still giving thanks, my uncle knew exactly where we went because my cousin had chili all over his shirt. Good times... As for the rest of the town, yes it is very nice, but the bars down by the river tarnish it.
