  1. Isn't Marquis a decent hitting pitcher? Anyone up for swapping Marquis and Izturis? Wow, I am starting to think like Tony LaRussa...somebody help me! Overall, I really like the line up and am glad to see Murton in the 2 spot. I wouldn't be opposed to having Jones hit 5th and Barrett 6th either, but overall it looks good.
  2. Thanks for all of the advice. I knew you guys would give me some quality feedback. Like I said earlier...I sat in many places around the stadium, and have been on a rooftop across the street, I just haven't sat in the bleachers. The other cool thing is that I am going with my two brothers, my uncle, and my dad (all huge Cubs fans) and none of us have ever been in the bleachers before, so I am looking forward to it. Keep the words of wisdom coming...only about two more months before I go. Thanks again!
  3. My brother just called and has 5 bleacher tickets to the game May 4th (Friday) against Washington @ 1:20. Now, I have been to Wrigley many times, but this will be the first time in the bleachers, so I have some questions for those who have been to the bleachers a lot. 1. I know they are general admission tickets, so how early should we stand in line to get good seats (first or second row) 2. Left Field vs. Right Field 3. Any other advise, comments, concerns, etc. Thanks in advance for all of your help!
  4. I would love to see Woody come into a tight ball game in the 9th. I think a lot will depend on how much he has pitched say the night before, or how much rest he needs. I don't have a problem (and I doubt many would) if both Wood and Dempster finished the year with say 20-25 saves each. I don't know if Lou thinks that way, but ... As for Wood coming into a game in a tight spot, the only fear I would have, and this is coming from memory, so I might be way off, is his control. Say, Woody comes into a game with 0 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd up by a run. A walk moves the go ahead runner up to 2nd, but does give us a force out at home. I guess what I am trying to say, is a lot of times (going from memory) walks killed Kerry. How would this effect him coming into a tight spot in a game?
  5. I am guessing quantity and not quality won't work in this case. I know a guy drafted can't be traded for a year, but would Szmard....the WR from Notre Dame...izia be ranked with Veal and Hill or not?
  6. I think there is something about having to play on a playoff team to win rookie of the year, or just even to get any votes! :D
  7. Having seen many I-Cubs games, and listened to many more on the radio, Quade (I think he pronounces Quad-EE) is a really down to earth guy. I honestly don't think he becomes manager of this team, but I think he has some role with the major league ball club. Listach was in AAA Iowa as a hitting coach before taking over as AA West Tenn's manager. I think this might be a "token" interview for the Cubs and for Listach. If Listach has any thoughts about being a big league manager, it is always good to get that first interview, and why not have it be with an organization you are familiar with. I think Listach is young enough to use this as an idea as to what an interview is like with a big league ball club.
  8. So do we think Stone might be the next president of the Cubs? Don't think I like this idea too much.
  9. For a long time, the Cubs had difficulty finding one "quality" left handed starting pitcher. With Hill and Marshall, that could give them two. Now, I am not saying that either Hill or Marshall are quality yet, but Marshall hasn't looked terrible this year and Hill has looked great these last two starts. I remember reading somewhere about Hill trying to develop a better change up. I think it was after he was sent down last time that he had a quote that he needed a better change. Couldn't find any link to back this up, but if memory is correct...
  10. I should add a few guys to the list like Erye, Howry, and Blanco. I didn't include Cedano because I think he is getting a free pass. Murton struggles, he is out of the line up for a few days, Cedano stuggles and he is out there everyday. I know there is a difference in what to expect from a shortstop and left fielder, but Cedano makes more errors, and poor hitting then Murton. Jones has had this me against the city of Chicago attitude since he got here. Now starting the year off playing bingo (.041 avg or whatever it was) has had him in the doghouse. Then when he plays well, he still has to bark at the crowd. I was a big fan of Walker, but lately with his comments followed by his steller play tonight has made me cool on him a little. He did however move Pierre over twice tonight.
  11. Marmol Marshall Z Barrett Lee Theriot Murton Three young pitchers and four hitters. Out of 25 guys, I can only cheer for 7! Unbelievable. The hitters are all people who are patient. I have tolerated Hendry and Baker the last year, but now is the time they all need to go.
  12. Polanco is playing second for them still I believe. I am not sure how or where Walker would fit into their lineup. Is Shelton their DH, or does he play a lot of first?
  13. Again, let me say that I want Maddux to be the pitching coach when his playing days are over. I would love to see Maddux stick around just to be a player/coach the rest of this year when Baker/Sarge/Clines/Rothchild (crosses fingers) all get to collect unemployment checks.
  14. Vance's dream could come true... Gonzalez for manager Maddux as pitching coach??? (Insert other past Braves players and coaches to fill out the rest of the coaching staff) Dale Murphy Mark Lemke Otin Nixon
  15. I know a lot of people talk about how great Maddux is in the dugout to talk with and stuff, but has Maddux ever mentioned anything about getting into coaching. The way people talk, he could be one helluva pitching coach.
  16. They also opened recently the Science Center of Iowa and the Iowa Hall of Pride. I have not been to either, but have heard great things from other teachers who took their students to the Iowa Hall of Pride. It has a bunch of Iowa related activities, but also very interactive. Des Moines also has a zoo, but it is not comparable to any "larger" city zoo. Living History Farms is neat, Adventureland will kill time, if I think of any other things in the area, I will let you know. If you are with an "older" group, make sure you go to the ball park early and head up to the Miller High Life Lounge. Throwback to the 1970's and have PBR and Schiltz on tap. Brings in a wide group of people from the factory workers to the college co-eds.
  17. It was a blow out. It was a Sunday afternoon, and they were getting killed. My brother and I left early and on the way home trying to catch the end, they said Augie was pitching. I think it was the last Sunday of April...don't remember the team they were playing either.
  18. AJ immitated what Z does when he comes into the dugout. That is why Z was upset. AJ is a jerk. There is a reason nobody liked him in Minnesota and SF.
  19. Fans are going to boo. That happens everywhere. I just don't want Cub fans to be lumped with the "terrible" fans in all the other sports. Booing Dempster is kind of a tough call. Here is a guy that runs a string of consecutive saves together, so it was bound to happen sooner or later. The problem was it happened in the middle of a losing streak. Had he blown a save during a winning streak, would the same thing happen? I hope not, but am not sure about it. Since the playoffs, many Cub fans have booed a lot more then I can remember. Do they have a reason, absolutely. Has it gotten a little out of hand...maybe.
  20. Maybe good players won't want to come and struggle and put up with all of the crap Jones has gone through. Gooney- I agree that it is unfortunate that no attention is being directed at Jones' baserunning. But more attention would be directed had this person not thrown a ball at him. I just think the more of this that happens, the more Cubs fans are going to be turned into Piston fans, or Sox fans. Both of who took a big hit after the umpire/coach attack, and the Pacers brawl.
  21. My first reaction was that this is something that happened would happen on the South side, not Wrigley. No excuses can be made for this person's actions. That being said, Jones' baserunning deserves to be booed. That is it. Not a ball thrown at them, not being verbally abused, booed. Unfortunately, the fan in this case is taking away from the attention that should be directed at Jones' poor baserunning. However, because some idiot threw a ball at him, we are spending more time talking about the fan and the incident then what we should be talking about...baseball on the field. I am not making excuses for Jones, but how does this reflect on the fans of the Cubs. Are people going to want to come and play for a team whose fans throw things at them when they do poorly?
  22. What is everyone's opinion about having Matty Murton hitting in the two spot? I personally like it and have thought of Murton as a Sandberg type hitter.
  23. I went to the game last night, since I can't go tonight. I was hoping to see Woody, but didn't see him anywhere. I guess I have seen him pitch every other time he has been here, so 4-5 isn't bad. Heck, 4 out of 5 makes me the best hitter on the Cubs by .700 points on my batting average. Anyway, I asked Buck Coats where Woody would be taking them after the game, and he responded by saying anywhere that has good steak and cold beer. On a side note, Felix Pie hit two homers last night, one a game winner. However, I was disappointed in his fielding. Missed numerous cut off men. Looked like he was trying to "show off" his arm eventhough it moved runners up bases. Don't get me wrong, I think he is going to be good, but some of the "fundamentals" can be improved. I have seen Iowa twice, and both times, he made some bad decisions. I would really like to see him stay in Iowa all year to work on these things.
  24. Just for the sake of throwing it out there... Would anyone do a Soriano trade now to have him play 2nd base until Lee gets back? When Lee returns, you can put Soriano in the OF and take Jones (and his hefty 3 year contract out of the line-up). Pierre-CF Cedano-SS Walker-1B ARam-3B Soriano-2B Murton-LF Barrett-C Jones-RF (we all know Dusty won't bat him this low) Pierre-CF Walker-2B Lee-1B ARam-3B Soriano-LF or RF Murton-RF of LF Barrett-C Cedano-SS I haven't put much thought into it, but it does provide a little bit of pop and some protection for ARam. Depends what we have to give up, and if he is available. IMO, I don't mind Soriano as long as he is not a top of the order hitter. Again, haven't put much thought into it, just wanted to see/hear what others thought.
  25. Listening to the radio yesterday, Pat made a comment that Bynum has struck out 14 of his 28 plate appearances. WOW! That is terrible. My Jr. High team isn't even that bad.
