    Before he went to NY and flopped people talked about him like they are talking about Burnett this year. Vasquez is a good pitcher. But Yankee inflation has made him not worth the contract.

    Why can't baseball players just come out and say it? This is ridiculous. He makes over 9 mil a year, I'm not sure Chicago is any closer to PR than Arizona, even if it is, I doubt there's any money consideration in terms of cost to visit home. I have little respect for people that can't come out and say what the mean or what they want. Why can't he just come out and say "I didn't sign with AZ, I don't like the direction the franchise is going, I don't want to play here anymore." Yea, remember when Hampton signed with the Rockies? It was for the great schools like Columbine. It wasn't for the money.

    goony beat me to it. I'd like to add that I also think that if the Cubs don't win soon there will be some changes made for change sake. If Hendry and Dusty go I wouldn't be surprized if one of Z or Prior would be traded simply b/c the new GM needs to make "his bones".

    Heh. Quentin is awesome. Yes, he played in 3 hitter's havens along the way to the big leagues (Lancaster, El Paso, Tucson), but he's still a very good hitter with great pitch selection. I wish he were a Cub. He also tears up the major leagues in MVP '05 in the yeaar 2008.

    The Astros and Dodgers should have been scared in 2004, when the Cards averaged over 5 runs per game in the playoffs against them. The Padres should have been scared in 2005, when the Cards averaged 7 runs per game against them in the playoffs. To say "they don't scare anybody" is just foolish. They scare the hell out of me. And will scare me even more if they get Giles. It's like freaking Holloween it is so scary.

    I agree. Having lived in Miami I can tell you that Loria has been trying to do this for a long time. Some in the community, the radio personality Hank Goldberg has been all over Loria for his less than fan friendly ways. In 2003, their World Champoinship year, They didn't even print a media guide or programs in time for opening day. Loria and his son in law have been trying to get the City to pay for a ball park for years. Just one other fun fact from my time in Miami. In 2001 during a game in late August when the team was out almost all of the five or so thousand fans started chanting, "Less go Jankees" every time the Yankees score came up on the board. IIRC, the Marlins where playing the Dodgers that night.

    I'd understand Hendry's thinking if he included Pie as part of a package for Abreu, but I don't think Bobby would make them favorites, and I'd much rather see them sign Giles and hang on to Pie. So much is up in the air in terms of the Cubs outfield right now, I have no idea when Pie will be up. I would understand Hendry's thinking if he didn't trade Pie, as well. I'd rather have Giles too, he only costs money. I tend to think Pie will be up in 2007. But I am a bit worried about his numbers in the DR this winter. Maybe he is tired. This whole sorry debate appears to be largely academic as there are no indications that Hendry is doing anything with regard to the sucking chest wound that is right field. I hope he has one more blockbuster left in him.

    Do you think the Cubs are an Abreu away from winning the World Series in the next couple years? Yes. I also think Pie has a chance to be a speical player. I wouldn't just trade him away for anyone. I am interested though, what do you think Pie's numbers will look like his rookie season? Will that season be 2006 or 2007? edit add: as I stated previously, with Abreu, Lee, Rameriz the cubs have a top 5 middle of the order. if they put a couple of guys in front of them who can get on base they have the makings of a championship offense. With the starting pitching and a little luck form the pen they have the makings of a division winning pitching.

Do you expect Pie to be a 30/30 guy with an OBP of 330+? In his first year do you expect pie to have a SLG of even cloes to .500? If so, when do you expect him to be and everyday MLer? Abreu brings all that right now. And how does this relates to your incorrect statement about Abreu being a better hitter than Pujols at the start of Albert's career? It doesn't but this thread is not about any incorrect comparison I made to Albert and Abreu it is about the idea of trading Pie. I didn't know you where that much into pissing contests. A pissing contest? That's great. You're the one that brought Albert's rookie production into this, and your incorrect statement seemed directed at dismissing Pie's chances at being an impact bat his rookie season. In his rookie year do you expect Pie to post numbers similar to Albert in his rookie year? Do you expect him to post simialr numubers to what Abreu posted for the last three years? If so when do you expect Pie will be playing for the Cubs and producing those numbers?

Abreu brings all that right now. Abreu is 32 years old. He doesn't have many good seasons left. Pie could bring us a many good seasons at a low price or we can trade him for an under 30 year old impact bat. I'd be all for that too. Abreu is 32 so what? He has three years left on his contract, in that three years he is likely not to regress that much. I like Pie I think he might be great. Might is the key word here. Abreu is great and if it takes Pie to get him I would do it. That is all I'm saying. I think the Cubs need to move now, I beileve their window of opportunity is closing. It's fine if other disagree.

    Pie has more than 1/2 of a good pro season. He was good in 2004 and was pretty good in 2003. He also had a great debut in rookie ball. You could say he's only had 1/2 a great season above rookie ball. But that's hardly a knock. Plus, Pie's resume is pretty similar to Cabrerra as of this stage in their respective careers. In A ball he is playing against a bunch of guys who will not be going anywhere. However, that makes his 1/2 a season even more impressive. So I guess I will stand corrected and say he has had only 1/2 of a season where he has played great. IMO, that does not make him a can't miss. Nor shoud it preclude him being traded for Abreu.

It was a satire of the lead up to and eventual excursion into Iraq. The Secratary of Defense was named RumDum. SORRY FOR THE HIJACK. Carry on.

    ah, but your logic is faulty as well grasshopper. Just because E&H are added to O&W does not mean the Cubs Zen master will not overwork any one of them.

    How do you know he won't be great for at least 3 years? Pujols and Cabrera didn't take 3 years to become stars. Every GM will ask for Pie, but I think Abreu can be obtained with a package of players without Pie included. Hendry has accumulated a ton of spare parts, rule 5 players, and prospects to put together a decent package. I don't. But you don't know he will be great. The kid has had 1/2 of a good season in professional baseball, and at the minor league level. He has a big loopy swing and swings at everything. I'm not saying he is terrible, but he has a lot to work on and will not likely make a big league club until 2007 at the earliest. Besides, Pie does not have the pedigree of either Albert or Miguel. In addiion, neither of those two were where Abreu is now in their first year. Now I'll turn the question back to you; How do you know Abreu can be had for spare parts? I find that quite preposterous.

    Get over yourself and your armchair opinions. Lol, thats probalby construed as a personal attack, but I agree with you. You can't act like you know more than a GM in baseball, the guy has his job for a reason. GM's are smart, smart people, with degrees from great universities. I know Epstein is a Yale grad. Having your opinion is one thing but just keep at that, an opinion, don't try to make it fact! edit - grammar You two crack me up. We're here on a baseball board in a forum called "transactions" which is made for reacting to actual transactions and discussing hypothetical transactions. In other words, there is literally no purpose for this forum but to be an armchair GM. I thought the purpose was to praise Hendry for what a wonderful job he did two and/or three years ago. In addition, to praise him for spending about 15 million dollars on medicore (at best) talent in Eyre, Howry (if true), Neifi, and Rusch.

    Here is my deal: Pie may turn out to be great. But he most likely won't be great for at least 3 years. In addition, he is ranked at the top of the Cubs system but not near the top of all prospects in baseball. In other words, he is the best the Cubs have but not nearly the best. Now let's look at Abreu. He is a top five player at his position. He will likely be near the top for at least the length of his current contract. The Cubs have a brief window with this group of pitchers and they need a productive RFer. With Lee, Rameriz, and Abreu the Cubs have a top 5 middle of the order. Put a couple of guys who can get on base in front of them and you have the makings of a championship offense. With Z and Prior you have the one-two punch needed to succeed in the playoffs. If the Cubs get anything from Wood and Dempster continues to do well at the end you have the makings of division winning pitching. If I'm Hendry and Philadelphia is interested in Pie I try to make the deal work.

    I agree Vance, Bienfest is building for the future. I think the future also may be the LasVegas Gamblers and a team flush with cash. Unless Loria finds a way to screw it all up.

    Except for his Achellies and elbow that sidelined him for the beginning of 2004. Not that I think that makes him injury prone. I think it makes the manager not a good one and the pitching coach neglectfull, but I digress.
