  1. Group think, that's a good one.
  2. They were 35-19 in 1-run games and outproduced their expected W-L by 8 games. That indicates to me they excelled at fundamental play and situational hitting (and featured a strong bullpen). They were 35-19 in 1-run games because they had 12 pitchers pitch out of their minds and their offense couldn't score many runs so they were drawn into close games. Performance in one run games is terribly influenced by random variability. So much so that many people call 1 run wins "lucky" wins. There's not much "fundamental" about a "seeing eye" grounder or "ducksnort" bloop hit.
  3. Saved the best for last. I love it.
  4. Glad some people on these boards are rational. What up raw? Nice to see both Chicago clubs off to a good start. Ozzy Guillen will be fired by the ASB. The Sox are not a decent team. They are a mediocre to bad team who have gotten off to a decent start. They'll be sitting in 4th place by the end of the season. However, I really don't care what they do.
  5. I am so pissed. Freaking DirectTV blackouts the MLB EI games because I'm in the Reds Home territory but I don't get any station that carries the Reds games. Stupid.
  6. yeah, how Charlie Manuel didn't make that list is mind-bottling Last week I say Girardi use Cano (I think) bunt over Molina to third.
  7. I order of most to least crappy: Dusty Baker, Charlie Manuel, Joe Girardi, Ozzy Guillen, Ned Yost, Bruce Bochy (for leaving SD for SF)
  8. When Andy and Jim went about overhauling the organization in the mid 90's, they explicitly talked about focusing most of their developmental attention on pitchers, while trading for bats later. They thought that was the best way to emulate the Braves, ignoring how many quality position players that franchise developed. Quite frankly, I don't think any of us can really complain about the number of pitching prospects the Cubs have produced who have had some amount of success in the major leagues over the past ten years. Their plan worked. Off the top of my head, the following guys have pitched with varying degrees of success and exposure in the majors after spending some time in the Cubs' minor league system in the past ten years... Mark Prior Kerry Wood Carlos Zambrano Rich Hill Sean Marshall Jon Garland Carlos Marmol Dontrelle Willis Sergio Mitre Ricky Nolasco Renyel Pinto Carmen Pignatiello Michael Wuertz Ryan O'Malley John Koronka Todd Wellemeyer Will Ohman Andy Sisco Francis Beltran Sean Gallagher Juan Mateo That's just off the top of my head, to boot. Weren't there quite a few years where the top two or three picks were pitchers? That has an effect too.
  9. How does one value something that by definition, one knows so little about?
  10. I fully agree, but it won't be for any legitimate reason. He's being railroaded by the coaching staff; Lou is determined to destroy this kid's confidence. This is an incredible overreaction. It should be bronzed and placed in the Overreaction Hall of Fame. When one takes into account the recent history with PIe on the ML Roster I don't think the post is much of a stretch. However, since you feel the need to be the arbiter of what is and is not an overreaction, I'll defer to your greater wisdom.
  11. I wrote this in last night's game thread but I thought maybe it would be a good idea to discuss it here. Last night's loss was on Lou. Ward is not a RFer. If you have to get him some PT put him at 1st base. Bruce Miles' take. Discuss.
  12. And you haven't even touched Pie yet.
  13. Winner. At the time it was pretty much regarded that the Astros gave away Larry Andersen, correct? Bags wasn't much more than an average 3rd base prospect in the Red Sox system from everything I've heard. Not exactly. Bagwell was a 4th round draft pick who was the rookie of the year. He was drafted in 1989 and in the Bigs by 1991. 14. He was sharp for a while, gave up a tater to Pat the Bat on a decent pitch, and was let down by Lou and his defense. But he didn't pitch that well. Let down by Lou? How? I'm sure I could dig back in the game thread and figure this out, but I really don't want to. :good: Lou put Fukudome in CF and Ward in RF. Soriano didn't get to a ball and cut it off.

  16. But Felix Pie needs to learn his lesson! I was just going to post something about this. A manager is only good for a couple of wins/losses per year. As it stands now, this one is on Lou.
  17. Respect isn't the word I would use.
  18. This is hardly breaking news but you can probably bet that Douglas Roberts and Rose from Memphis are entering the draft.
  19. The Farns was a 47th round draft pick. However, I don't think it's quite fair to look at draft status in isolation. First, I want to know the quantitative definition of average and above average because I don't think very many "average" minor leaguers make it out of high A.
  20. Hill wasn't sharp in the first inning, but I thought the umpire was wasn't giving him the high strike either.
  21. Manbraids.
  22. Right, and he's a streaky hitter. I'd like to see the Cubs move Fukudome and DeRosa up in the order.
  23. Lilly seems to be giving up a lot of hits/IP in his first two starts. At least it seems like he was a lot more dominant last year. Just a perception.
  24. Hughes is so much better than Kasper it's not even funny. And Santo is great for comedic effect. I'd much rather listen to that booth than listen to Kasper and Brenly sounding like they're underwater. Not denying that Hughes is better than Kasper, but Santo is so annoying it's unbelievable. I love Ron, but as a commentator, I'd rather not listen to him. Len and Bob are a great duo. Blasphemer. I listen to Hughes and Santo on 30 second delay and watch the game with the sound off.
