  1. Oswalt's funky split finger pitch is really nasty to lefties. I'm not expecting much outta Cpat toight.
  2. I think the most important games, besides Houston, are against the Brew Crew, because they always anhilliate us and are currently tied with us in the standings.
  3. Felix in Latin means lucky. So I guess he's the "lucky foot".
  4. He was awesome in the first half of 2004 and all of 2003.. what happened? I wouldn't go that far. He is 13-5 with a 2.4ish ERA in his last six starts (obviously before today). Wow, 18 decisions in 6 starts is impressive.
  5. Wait the filter won't let me spell Corey with a K?
  6. He was awesome in the first half of 2004 and all of 2003.. what happened? He has more walks and fewer strikeouts than Greg Maddux. They are really the same pitcher, except Mulder at this point throws more ground balls. And holy hell, Corey walked.
  7. I'll feel better if the Cubs happened to sweep the Cards in this series, but I wouldn't get optimistic unless we strung some amazing win streak together - like the 15 games back in 2001. That, or it's a 3-game deficit in the WC for us with a series vs. Houston. I think that streak was more like 11 games. nope. 15 I think I just checked retrosheet, and I found a streak of 14 wins in 15 games, and 11 wins straight in that streak, but no 15 wins in a row.

  9. This is true of TB, but Colorado is a cash cow, because they have large attendances. For that reason, I think that the Marlins should be contracted as well, because their attendances are just as lowsy as TB's.
  10. He was fired, the record shows, from Cinci after two consecutive first place finishes. That's probably not performance related.
  11. Interesting... I remember the majority of us Cub fans on cubs.com were excited about getting the "Dustbuster" too, even while SF fans were warning us about everything we're now complaining about. :? He wins just enough to satisfy you at first, but cannot win much more than that.
  12. That's not even an opinion. It's a fact. He said he didn't take steroids, while under oath, before the US Congress, then tested positive. He'll be lucky not to have perjury charges thrown at him (though it would be tough to prove that he was taking steroids at the exact time of the hearings) It doesn't need to be at the exact time of the hearing. It just needs to be at some date before the hearing took place, be it a day or 15 years.
  13. Our Pen Just got a bunch more righty. So Garciaparra is being called up in place of Hairston, meaning Cedeno is staying up. I think that is a tremendous waste of Ronny Cedeno, because moving to third on the depth chart means he will not get into another game this season. Shoulda called up Greenberg for him.
  14. At least this testing program is letting us see him.
  15. I agree, but I'm looking for specifics.
  16. So we have no lost on a dropped third strike that wasn't really dropped, and having the pitcher throw the ball off the head of the runner on first. And that's only against the Phillies. What other ways have we lost ball games this year that you all think qualify as "creative"?
  17. He could and someday will be a great pitching coach...
  18. Didn't Chief running back Joe Delaney die trying to save a kid from drowning? I don't really disagree with your base premise, that athletic achievement shouldn't be confused with heroism. But there have been plenty of sports figures who are true heroes. Um, Drew Rosenhaus (sp) also saved a kids life recently, and nobody's calling him a hero. That is because it was at a resort pool and Rosenhaus had lifeguard training. According to the accounts I've heard, Rosenhaus never put his life or well being in peril. While his actions are admirable, they aren't heroic, IMO. I think that's stretching heroism a little far. Do you have to risk your life to become a hero? Because that disqualifies pretty much everyone except soldiers, policemen, and firemen. Heroes don't need to be one of those.

  20. But aren't you implying that Ryno was a hero, because many Cubs fans definitely treated him like one? Look, there have always been a few clean guys in baseball, guys who really are or were heroes. The same is true today. The only difference is that there is now a testing policy that attempts to weed out the liars and cheaters, so they appear more visible than they really are. No, I don't think the implication that Ryno is a "hero" is there. Honestly, how do you think Sandberg would react if you went up to him and said "you are my hero"? I betcha he wouldn't really know what to do. He probably would feel rather uncomfortable with it. Payton would probably be the same way. This is such a confusing topic as far as I'm concerned. Everyone attaches different definitions to the words that are being bandied about: Hero, Role Model, Criminal, Cheater, Good-Guy, Bad-Guy. And the definitions keep changing, too. How does Pete Rose look now? Before he was the Universal Criminal of all baseball history---the leper, the outcast, the poster child for crash n' burn. Now you've got guys like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, and Rafael Palmiero ready to be launched into the Hall of Fame. Who is the poster child for "cheating" now? Probably not Rose anymore. For me, a hero is someone who sacrifices his life to save others. And I'm sticking with it :) Yeah, that eliminates all sports "heroes" from the equation, but hey. There are plenty of other superlatives we can use for Hall of Famers like Sandberg. Okay, you have me there, I'll agree on the fact that baseball players and all professional athletes are not "heroes", but they certainly are role models. And from the days where Honus Wagner wouldn't let his baseball card be on something as disgusting as ciggarettes and then Ty Cobb who would punch fans to today when you have Raphy Palmiero juicing up and really good guys like Derrek Lee (IMO), there are always role models and villians. Nothing has changed as so many people claim. Yes, there still can be role models today in My opinion.

  22. You get MAJOR props for that one =D>
  23. Remlinger DFAed? Really. Dusty seems to like him a lot. Although that Grand Slam yesterday didn't help his cause.
