  1. I'd believe the Red Sox bid 45 million. I also believe that if the Red Sox did make that bid, they have no intention of paying one cent of that 45 million. If they don't reach an agreement, they don't have to pay it. So what is stopping a team, like the Red Sox, from blocking another team (the Yankees) from getting him by making a ridiculous bid that they won't follow up?
  2. Nope, he's a FA after '07 Wells is a nice player, but I don't like him for our circumstances. He's an elite CF, and we need an elite position player somewhere. We currently have no center fielder. Who knows what Pie will ever do in his career?
  3. Hmm, okay. Thanks Bruce. I still don't understand why they couldn't just hire more scouts though. If the Cubs can hold a 100 million dollar payroll, how much of a difference is 2 more scouts going to make? Scouts don't make that much.
  4. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=2630122 I'm not sure what to make of that. Hendry apparently understood the need to focus on next year. But pull your scouts? Really?
  5. Now that would be funny. Joe Torre as his understudy's bench coach.
  6. The 5 keys to not getting doubled off - Jaque Jones Catching Popups - Aramis Ramirez
  7. Post all-star break, Howard is slugging .850. Yeah, .850. Consider that for a second.
  8. As a Cubs fan, are you allowed to do that?
  9. Z's had forearm cramping before, right? And it didn't hurt him?
  10. So we would trade jaque jones, michael barrett, Lee, isturiz, and that's really it. Are those players going to get a large enough return?
  11. That series was hands-down the most exciting regular season series I've ever watched. - Game 1, Cubs lose 13-11 even though they make an 8th and 9th inning push. Sammy hits 59. - Game 2, Cubs win 15-12 thanks to an RBI single from Tyler Houston and a walk-off HR from Orlando freaking Merced. Sammy hits 60. - Game 3, Cubs win 11-10 in extra innings thanks to a walkoff HR from Mark Grace. Sammy hits 61 and 62. The late-season additions of Gary Gaetti and GlenAllen deserve special mention. The Karchner for Garland trade on the other hand we probably want back. I would probably give it to that series to, but the 5 gamer against the Cards in September 03 was pretty darn exciting too.
  12. For a reliever to win the Cy Young, they must perform much better than Wagner's 2.24 ERA. This is especially true this year, when he'll be compared to Pappelbon, who has been much better. Anyway, that formula, if you've read the Neyer/James guide to pitchers, is by their own admission not always accurate.
  13. That's a lot of love for Dick Allen, but I feel it. 1. Lou Gehrig 2. Jimmy Foxx 3. Jeff Bagwell 4. Willie McCovey 5. Mark McGwire 6. Harmon Killebrew 7. Frank Thomas 8. Hank Greenberg 9. Johnny Mize 10. Eddie Murray. 11-13. Dick Allen, Don Mattingly, Cap Anson
  14. 1. Yogi Berra 2. Johnny Bench 3. Mike Piazza 4. Mickey Cochrane 5. Roy Campanella 6. Bill Dickey 7. Carlton Fisk 8. Gary Carter 9. Gabby Hartnett 10. Pudge Rodriguez I don't think Mike Piazza gets any love. He's the best hitting catcher ever, even accounting for era. I mean, he played basically his entire career in the two best pitchers parks in the NL, Shea and Dodger Stadium, and still put up incredible numbers. Also, I think Gary Carter has been underrated.
  15. Oakland is 2nd from the bottom in runs scored in the AL, and have still outscored the Cobs, 411-376 Exactly-so our strategy is definitely wrong, but it doesn't mean their strategy is right-don't you think we would have about the number of runs they have if Lee was here the entire season though? We'd still be bad-and we still need to make changes, but so do they. Oakland is also over 500 and currently in 1st place. Oakland has also given up more runs than they've scored. They also only have a half game lead, and are only 3 games over .500. I agree that their strategy is not necessarily right, and I would go as far as to say that they are maybe 2 bad breaks from being as bad as the cubs, albeit with a payroll half of ours.
  16. Big Z has definitely shown great resiliancy in his time with the Cubs, but his past two starts have been 128 and 126 pitches, respectively. I'm expecting a few lesser-quality starts in his next few, but I really hope he proves me wrong. Am I crazy about it?
  17. Should have been pulled as soon as the no-no was over. Another stupid call by Dusty. And then who would he have brought in? The invisible man who was warming up? You can't warm a guy up during the no-no because you then are showing no faith
  18. 6-2. Never give the Cards more credit than they deserve. Leave that to Tim McCarver
  19. Rusch did nothing to earn those 7 runs of support...he still sucks
  20. Ouch on TWalk. He's 0-7, although he has the two big puttings of the ball in play.
  21. Mega props to that one my friend has no idea why I can't stop laughing
  22. What are the chances he scores? 50%? 73%?
  23. Still raining steadily at my place about a mile south of Wrigley at 11.
  24. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/perezne01.shtml Neifi has played at least part of 1 game at catcher.
  25. Trade your starting 2nd baseman, who is on fire, for a two month rental?
