  1. That sounds a lot more like excuse-making for lack of performance than evidence. Or it's a logical reason. It's a logical reason for a pitcher whose performance projected to positive major-league numbers before the changes. But they didn't. He's a good prospect and a major-leaguer, but a 93-MPH fastball doesn't change that the majors and minors have both treated him like a mediocre pitcher on a pretty consistent basis. wait this is sean gallagher we're talking about? mediocre in the minor leagues? i don't get it.
  2. he also was supposed to put that one on the outside corner and missed by a solid foot
  3. guess it evened out, he didn't hit the ball hard in the first AB and got a single, then drilled that one and it was a double play
  4. Malkin reminds me of a healthy Forsberg, and a healthy Forsberg was the best player in the NHL for a 10 year period. that, and he does some things better than Forsberg did. namely, put the puck in the net.
  5. pretty sure that was in the same spot as ball 2 to derosa.
  6. if i was a big league manager, i'd probably end up getting thrown out of at least half the games i managed. reed johnson sucks.
  7. why does lou continue to put reed johnson in the starting lineup against RHP? your guess is as good as mine.
  8. People were worried about the rain coming back and Carlos only going something like 2-3 innings. ok. those people are idiots, the rain is done.
  9. yeah i am really hoping that malkin wants an ovechkin-type contract and the pens decide they can't afford both him and crosby. i don't like the two of them being on the same team. fleury is an RFA this offseason and malone, hossa, ruutu and orpik are all UFA. the pens are going to have a salary crunch that i do not envy. They were saying on HNIC tonight that Malkin has already told the Pens that he won't take a discount and his contract will probably be for more per year than Crosby's. that's what i like to hear. really, he's probably as good as ovechkin, so i don't blame him for wanting ovechkin-money.
  10. Alex Cora is the middle infielder who will be coming off the DL. Ironically, jed lowrie is better than both the starting shortstop and his soon-to-be backup.
  11. they're not. i'm fairly certain that the "very good" and "good" tags were mixed up; the guys in the "good" list had higher upside ratings than the guys on the "very good" list.
  12. It's just a ritual here. Every time Marmol pitches, everybody screams ZOMG HE IS BEING OVERUSED HIS ARM WILL FALL OFF ZOMG ZOMG. It's pretty amusing. (a) 95% of the complaining comes when lou needlessly uses marmol, as was the case in saturday's game (b) he's on pace to throw more innings than any reliever in baseball last season, so to laugh it off is awfully foolish.
  13. i think the rain starts tapering off in the early afternoon, and nothing by late afternoon is heavy or even moderate rain, maybe just spitting a little bit. that being said, there might be an inch of rainfall between now and then. the start will likely be delayed, and i think what it'll come down to is whether or not the outfield is too wet.
  14. some people don't like guys with high walk rates. not saying i agree with them, but it's a defensible position.
  15. I doubt they will. They have been pretty good at picking players. i know, that's why their surplus of picks concerns me. they don't have any really high picks like the ones they used on braun and laporta, but one would still expect them to develop a couple of quality major leaguers out of those six picks.
  16. Just kinda thinking out loud here, but Jed Lowrie is a good young shortstop prospect on the Red Sox who doesn't have a place to play, because Julio Lugo is signed through 2010. That being said, the Red Sox are pretty much always in win-now mode, so I don't think they'd want prospects for Lowrie unless they got a boatload of talent back. They also don't have much in the way of needs with their starting pitching or bullpen, and Lowrie serves as a backup infielder who is good enough to start on most teams. I'm just curious about how his situation will be resolved, because he's a good talent who deserves a shot somewhere.
  17. i don't even bother asking that any more. when felix pie has a solid game and then sits for the next five, or marmol comes in to shut the door on a five-run lead, it's just par for the course. lou was all right last year but he is doing a pretty damn lousy job managing this year's club.
  18. It's not just overworking him, although that is an important part of the argument. It was stupid to use him in this context, considering we used him yesterday and we're in the middle of a tough series against the best team in baseball. If we end up in a high leverage situation tomorrow (let's say up by 1 in the Top of the 7th with the Diamondbacks threatening with men on 1st and 2nd and one out), we won't be able to use him. It's fine to get him regular work, but this is just wasting him. yeah and when someone comes in and blows the lead, lou will lament during the post-game press conference that he didn't have his best reliever available to him. well no crap moron, that's because you insist on wasting him in games that he shouldn't appear in.
  19. this is highway robbery
  20. it was kinda thrown together after the season started, and the commissioner just set up an auto draft after we had five people in the league.
  21. he's on pace to throw 102 innings this season. how many relievers in baseball threw that many innings last season? i'll give you a hint. it's neither a positive nor a negative number.
