  1. if you look up "journeyman" in the dictionary, you might just see jim brower's face.
  2. you might've overreacted with the like-o-meter... sounds like his polling numbers are lower.

  4. Hell yeah. Gotta hear those radio calls. There should be more than one gem from today. Ask and ye shall receive. http://home.comcast.net/~bcvm22/cubs/5302008.mp3 you are the wind beneath my wings.
  5. i need some ron santo
  6. BP made a good point in that his home run rate (3 in almost 70 innings last year) was unsustainable for a guy who has heavy fly ball tendancies.... so his overall numbers will likely regress slightly from last year. but his stuff is scary good... hitters pretty much have to guess fastball and get the fastball if they want to hit a ball hard. if he throws the wiffle-ball slider the way that he normally does 90% of the time, hitters don't stand a chance. it could reasonably be argued that he's the most important pitcher on the team, and lou needs to do everything he can to keep marmol's arm fresh for october.
  7. He doesn't have to be your favorite, but what does he have to do for you to feel safe with him? His numbers are downright amazing. All of them. From HR's allowed to K:BB ratio, to K/9, to OPS against, to high leverage OPS, to RISP 2 outs, to close and late OPS against, to his overall control to his ERA +. What do you need from him? He's been way better than anyone expected if you look at his metics, pretty much any and all of them. i will say that most of the time i am all for wood being the closer, but given that marmol clearly had his lights-out stuff and wood is still a risk to not really have his command from time to time. i also stupidly said that kerry is a fly ball pitcher - which is true - except marmol's FB/GB is even more severe. But, marmol does a better job of preventing balls from being hit (i.e., strikeouts), so I still would've preferred him in the ninth inning. whatever. it's a nice problem to have, two very good pitchers for the end of a ballgame. the bullpen is #5 in MLB in ERA, #4 in OBP against, #3 in WHIP and #2 in K/BB. it's a bullpen that's deep in talent, has a guy who is proving his worth as a closer, and one of the top bullpen arms in all of baseball. another reason why the cubs should win the division handily.
  8. not to pee in everyone's cheerios, but both of edmonds' big hits (homer, 2-run double) were hit on hanging breaking pitches. i still don't see the evidence that he can get around on a decent fastball.
  9. it's like that one game in 2003, except upside down i did not think i'd "go cubs go" today unless it randomly popped up on the ipod
  10. i will go on record as not liking wood over marmol here. marmol was filthy and wood is a heavy fly ball pitcher.
  11. i wonder if they had to call marmol and woody at home to tell them they might be needed, come back to the ballpark
  12. i am going back and listening to the last two innings after this game... even tomorrow or something.
  13. lol, win or lose this is a hell of a lot of fun
  14. good news - tying run is at the plate bad news - it's jim edmonds
  15. ok that's it, just hit baker in the butt the next time he comes up
  16. if you're going to visit the bargain bin, lofton makes a hell of a lot more sense than edmonds. lofton could probably put up a .350 OBP, which isn't great, but it's sure better than - as BP might have put it - the "charred remains of jim edmonds." lofton is a pretty bad fielder at this point, though.
  17. i'm starting to think the cubs are not going to win this one
  18. why not just leave lilly in to throw BP for a couple more innings? the game is already over; no need to chew up the bullpen more than it already will be.
  19. btw theriot would've homered on the pitch that cedeno grounded out
  20. edmonds should be up in right field doing crowd control with roast
