  1. coming into tonight's game, four cubs were in the top 20 in baseball in lowest percentage of pitches in the strike zone: 2. rizzo (37.5%) - this one is mostly just fear; i don't think he has the reputation as a guy who will get himself out. 12. fowler (39.4%) - this is a weird one, because he doesn't have that much power and isn't really a free swinger. 18. bryant (40.1%) - combination of fear and trying to get a young guy to chase pitches out of the zone. 20. soler (40.3%) - same as bryant. on the negative side, bryant and soler are among the 5 worst players in terms of contact %, and their numbers are pretty similar in terms of making contact to addison russell and alcantara.
  2. topic for discussion: is there any kind of contract offer that could be made now, which would be deemed reasonable by the cubs and by bryant/boras, and would buy out his arbitration years and first 2-3 years of free agency?
  3. just offer bryant a 20 year, $400 million contract.
  4. villanueva hit his 5th home run in just 24 games today. overall he's showing more patience and striking out less than last year, and his power has increased. obviously he doesn't have a future with the cubs, but if he can project to be even close to league average offensively, i wonder if he'd have some trade value to a second-division team.
  5. this is the middle of the order i've always dreamed of. can't wait for a couple of years from now when they've gotten better at hitting breaking pitches.
  6. russell's 42% strikeout rate could become problematic.
  7. i do enjoy goodell's complaints about brady not being open and honest about this, given how brazenly goodell lied about any number of things after the ray rice videotape fallout.
  8. They way they worded the suspension, part of it is due to his lack of cooperation which gives the NFL wide latitude. Since he refused to let them see his phone apparently, that is all the NFL needs to suspend him. i think drew magary says it best: deadspin.com/roger-goodell-is-a-[expletive]-eating-moron-1703762629 didn't think there could be a worse commissioner than gary bettman, but damned if goodell isn't giving it his best shot.
  9. i'm assuming this will be appealed, since "more likely than not that he knew" is pretty shaky ground for a substantial punishment.
  10. PTR asking people in the bleachers for spare change.
  11. boy there was a guy in the live shot from those left field bleachers who is morbidly obese.

  13. Wada should fix the Coke problem(either himself or by pushing Wood there), and Jackson is fine as an end of the bullpen innings eater. yeah, not sure why people are talking about jackson. i feel like he's barely pitched and almost always when things are off the rails well he's supposed to be the long man in the bullpen, which is a problem when you bring him in to the 5th inning of a close game and he gets precisely zero outs.
  14. why is the front of starlin's helmet so filthy?
  15. just release edwin jackson and phil coke, then make the last two spots in the bullpen a revolving door of waiver claims and whoever is pitching well this week. can't be any worse, can it?
  16. this $2 million investment in phil coke is not really paying off.

  18. i guess 6 inches outside is only a strike to soler.
  19. do the cubs have one of those pitching machines that throws breaking pitches? if not, this seems like something we should invest in.
  20. "strike one" to soler was half a foot outside. he seems to get boned over a lot.
  21. The back end of the Cubs bullpen isn't the problem not saying it is necessarily....with this starting staff.....a lead after 6 needs to be a done deal/a wrap...ala the Royals of last year etc...That's IF nothing should happen to Rondon....as always...IMO coming into this game, the cubs had the third-best starters' FIP in baseball.
