  1. does dorrell arthur have a massive coke problem that we don't know about or something?
  2. he should've called him a ron jeremy look-alike
  3. lol josh mcroberts... i remember saying that i'd be really surprised if mcroberts went in the lottery, and someone then replied and said that he was definitely going to be picked that early. only missed the lottery by what, like 25 picks?
  4. Are you gonna be laughing when your boys draft Koufos? i'll be laughing... at them
  5. btw i'm just glad we didn't take the white guy
  6. oh cool, jay bilas says he's a "big-time talent" - that tells me that he's exactly the same as every person that jay bilas has talked about.
  7. God sixers, don't pick the white guy from ohio state.
  8. wait, a guy from rider got picked? hurry up and get to the sixers pick so i can go to bed. i'm wondering if we'll go safe guy who makes next to no impact, or high-ceiling guy who ends up being a complete bust.
  9. giambi also has the top EqA amont american league first basemen by .015. i suppose this is another case of complaining about dayn perry when what he wrote was entirely reasonable.
  10. if the cubs make a trade, it should be to get a guy who will be a top 3 option in the postseason, not to get marquis out of the rotation. this team should be good enough to make it to the playoffs even with marquis taking the ball every five days.
  11. i don't think you'd find anyone who doesn't love rich harden's ability as a pitcher. but he's thrown only 200 innings in the past 3 years and has been on the DL 3 times with a shoulder injury in the last year. so when you trade for him, be aware that there's a significant chance that he won't be on the mound in september/october.
  12. i guess in some ways i agree with you. he's adequate as a starter at the back of the rotation, even though he's too hittable and his command is pretty lousy for someone with marginal stuff. my main beef with him is the decline in his peripherals; i worry that once more of the fly balls start going over the fence, he's going to be barely passable as a #5 starter. the contract is dumb but marquis really shouldn't be an obstacle to winning... he is still someone you don't want anywhere near the field in a playoff game, however.
  13. What stat would you like to use that shows him as a horrible starting pitcher worthy of the hate he gets? We could use his team expected win-loss from last season, which was 16.1-16.9. Or his peripheral ERA of 4.33 (don't have the numbers for this season, otherwise I would use them, apologies). He's not a horrible starting pitcher, and I defy anyone to post some real, statistical evidence that says he is. i posted in the game thread that his peripherals are all ugly this year, and he's likely to get worse. his K-rate is down, his LD% against is up, and he's given up home runs on 50% fewer fly balls than normal this season. yikes.
  14. he kinda has a point though. if the game is supposed to mean something - which is stupid in and of itself - would you rather have a guy who's been consistently good for a while, or a guy who's had an outstanding first half but really isn't as good as he's played. if you're playing to win the game, do you want xavier nady or matt holliday? ryan ludwick or adam dunn? carlos quentin or manny ramirez?
  15. jason marquis is a nice example of why citing ERA or ERA+ as one's sole argument is a losing proposition.
  16. this was funny until it made me think about the 2006 world series, which i've been trying to completely erase from my memory.
  17. i have a real hard time getting into the dominican summer league stats. how do i know if they're any good? it's not like we have draft position to look at to know whether a guy is highly-regarded, and as far as i know, there aren't any real bonus babies. some guy named mejia has good numbers, but he's 22 years old. another guy named morales is hitting pretty well and is only 19, but he's got 12 errors and is listed as an outfielder (!!) ramon reyes is 19 years old and has a 0.47 ERA and 28 K's in 19 IP... cool i guess. the offensive numbers seem pretty pedestrian whereas some of the pitchers on DSL cubs 1 have pretty good numbers. but what type of park do they play in? do they use milk cartons for gloves like felix pie used to do? i guess my point is that i have no idea what goes on down there, and no clue how to glean any sort of information from looking at their stats.
  18. he's a great fielder, but fielding does not make up for a completely unacceptable bat. last year he was very bad; this year he's probably on pace to be one of the worst-hitting regulars in major league history. .366 OPS pretty much tells the story, but other stats - .079 EqA, -15.8 runs above replacement player, -19.6 VORP. that is mind-boggling.
  19. you got to be in the majors to be the worst in the majors he played for the tigers today.
  20. i don't know if chad bradford still has the 'stache, but it looks ridiculous in his mlb.com photo.
  21. man is it that bad? i stopped paying attention at 7-0 and started following the cards game.
  22. seriously, do you think they called him up just to see if dave duncan could make literally anybody good? he walks 3.5-4 guys per 9 IP, strikes out only 6-6.5 per 9, gives up 10-11 hits per 9, good for a 1.55 WHIP - in springfield and memphis. he looks terrible on paper... les walrond's numbers have more upside that mike parisi.
  23. leadoff single for granderson... dave duncan might have met his match with this bum
  24. and the cards' pitcher is a complete gas can
  25. cards out in the 10th... top of the order for the tigers, get some runs you losers
