  1. i'm gonna try to refer to the sox pitcher as "who?" as much as possible during this game thread. if he's still in the game when i get back from volleyball, anyway.
  2. It looks like IU could be screwed for years over the Sampson mess. The NCAA is going after the program for not fulfilling their promise to monitor Sampson's calls (remember when he was first hired he wasn't allowed to do any recruiting but they changed it just not allowing him to go on visits since he was at a different program who had a good history of following the rules). This would me the program would get sanctions and probably more than just minor ones because they didn't do their job (and Greenspan resigning is a very bad sign of the program's hands being dirty). It could blow over, IU could lose scholarships, IU could be banned from post season play for awhile or a combo on the last two. It will be interesting to see what happens and if it gets ugly whether Crean jumps ship at some point. it probably won't be that bad. georgia had some incredibly egregious violations under jim harrick, and they basically got a slap on the wrist. alabama football might've deserved the death penalty after the albert means scandal, and they got off relatively light (despite their bitching that the punishment was too severe). i don't see the NCAA coming down too hard on one of their most prestigious basketball programs.
  3. i like this game thread title better... cobs for 3 losses, plus "who?" starting for white sox.
  4. yeah buehrle is not significantly tougher against LH batters, and fukudome can hit LHP. edmonds should not be playing if fukudome can handle CF.
  5. i don't know what the point was of lou going out and dropping the f-bomb on gallagher about 10 times. because he gave up a double on an 0-2 pitch? it wasn't a bad pitch, and i'd rather see our pitchers forcing guys to hit tough 0-2 pitches than throwing the classic eye-high fastball or the 58-foot curveball on 0-2.
  6. so is he buying the cubs or what?
  7. i think he sprained his grit. GET IT
  8. mitchell boggs has held the royals scoreless through 4. in related news, his career minor league WHIP is 1.40.
  9. Everybody says that every time we go through a little rought patch. or in the case of erik, a bad inning
  10. i was intrigued by your idea IMB, so here we go - guys who were probably drafted very high (i'll keep it to the lottery) because they were tall, but as it turned out they couldn't play for beans: 2007: is it too early to list yi jianlian yet? 2006: is it too early to list andrea bargnani yet? it's probably not fair, because he's not a complete stiff and that was a really weak draft too. there should be no debate on saer sene or patrick o'bryant though. 2005: fran vasquez? 2004: robert swift, lol 2003: DARKO! chris kaman 2002: Tskitishvili, Nene? 2001: i wouldn't count kwame brown; everyone thought he'd be good and not because he was tall. desagana diop. 2000: not a complete stiff, but chris mihm. joel pryzbilla is terrible. 1999: Aleksandar Radojevic! 1998: Olowokandi? he was picked ahead of jamison and carter. michael doleac. 1997: adonal foyle (patriot league FTL :x ) 1996: todd fuller. potapenko wasn't really terrible, but he was the pick before kobe bryant. 1995: BIG COUNTRY, and who can forget cherokee parks? 1994: i won't count sharone wright b/c he might've been good if not for injury. eric montross and yinka dare! 1993: almost none, but thankfully scott haskin was the last pick in the lottery.
  11. It might be fun to go through draft lotteries from the last 10-15 years and pick out how many big stiffs got drafted ahead of actual basketball players just because of their height. http://hoopedia.nba.com/images/7/71/Bradley.jpg my favorite part was that the sixers talked to the media about how shawn was a good golfer as well - as evidence that he was a good athlete. First of all, golf does not involve a whole lot of athletic ability. Second, you don't have to go bang around with guys who can bench press more than the bar when you play golf.
  12. wait til word gets out about the expanding/contracting dimensions of the cell.
  13. okay that won't last, but a lot of his non-outs still end up not being in play.
  14. That's just [expletive]. don't know that i'd use the word [expletive] - personal preference - but just as crazy as his OBP is his K-rate. he struck out only 709 times in 7,709 at bats, or 9.2% of his ABs. compare that to babe ruth at 15.8% - still relatively low for a high-power guy - or 21.1% for mickey mantle. think about fukudome, who everyone agrees has a great eye - he ends up striking out a lot because he gets deep into counts and either takes a third strike or is trying to protect and swings/misses at something out of the strike zone. williams just didn't do that very often; he either walked or put the ball into play. his season high in strikeouts was 51. pujols is probably the best modern parallel for williams. he struck out 93 times his rookie year, but since then his K/AB rate has been 9.4% - again, phenomenal for a power hitter. the biggest difference between pujols and williams is that pujols isn't as patient, though he has been this year. if he ends up walking something like 120 times in 140 games this year, i wouldn't be surprised if one of ted williams' seasons is pujols' top PECOTA comparison for 2008.
  15. OBP is more important, but hitting for average is a repeatable skill, so it's not like it should be completely blown off. some guys just strike out less, make better contact regularly or get out of the box quickly. in fact, i'd argue that ability to hit for average is more important than high walk rate for a minor league player with little power.
  16. the cubs also had 10 LOB and had some very good scoring opportunities - the first inning they left a couple on base, bases loaded and crede made a great play on soto's liner, and the 9th inning with lee on 3rd base for ARam and edmonds. basically the game could've gone either way, and the white sox had things go their way.
  17. btw the cubs have a beat up pitching staff and the white sox have the best june OPS by about 50 points. this shouldn't be shocking to anyone; the white sox do have a good offense and a lot of decent hitters (cabrera, ramirez, crede) who are unusually hot right now. baltimore has the #5 OPS in june, by the way.
  18. I severely doubt the 2006 Cubs even had 71 games where they drew 2 or more walks 105 times in '06, actually. wow so they had 57 games - or more than a third of their games - where they took zero walks or one walk??? that is truly horrendous. this year's team is on pace to do it 16 or 17 times.
  19. yes plz i changed my mind, you get the mariners and seattle gets the cubs.
  20. maybe if hendry sells off the vets and grabs some good prospects for them, we might be a contender in the early two thousand teens. could andy pettitte's move be any more of a balk? maybe if he had the ball on a string and threw it toward the plate, had it come back to him, and then threw over to the base?
  21. i know, it's ridiculous. the brewers will be ahead by next weekend, come on folks.
  22. it's a shame we had such a good start, we really don't have much of a shot at the #1 overall draft pick now.
  23. why do the cubs bother stealing signs when they can just install an expandable and retractable stadium instead?
