  1. searle is looking pretty interesting. 36 IP, 27 H, 10 ER, 10 BB, 43 K, .193 BAA, 2.50 ERA in Australia; 17.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 16 K, .136 BAA, 0.53 ERA. nice to see a guy from a place that's not exactly a baseball hot spot showing this much polish this early. and so far he is showing nice sink on his pitches too.
  2. awesome, dan hicks was channeling his inner gus johnson in the last few seconds of that race.
  3. i don't even know how much of it was him fading. he went out super fast and came back 4 seconds slower, but his split - 46.73 - was only a tenth slower than bousquet. nobody other than eamon sullivan (aus) and probably phelps swam a faster 100 in this. nobody who knows swimming really thought that the u.s. had a chance coming out of that last turn; if you watch the replay, dan hicks and rowdy gaines were pretty much giving the french the gold, u.s. silver and aussies bronze. people just aren't supposed to be able to split 46 flat. as much as i'd like to bash bernard, i think lezak deserves all the credit for this. he swam the race of his life, maybe the best relay swim ever, in the perfect spot.
  4. i'm not holding it against him, but i am weighing the relative significance of those numbers. santo was an elite hitter in a pitching-dominant era, and was a better defensive player than sosa, and played a position where less offense is produced than RF.
  5. his split of 46.74 was actually pretty good... if you'd told me that he would split high 46 i would've said no way he gets caught. i literally cannot believe that lezak swam that fast. i don't know if it was the most exciting race i've ever seen - mostly because i wasn't comfortable with how close bousquet went in against cullen-jones, and then when bousquet opened up half a body length (he split 46.63 - that's nuts for a #3 in a relay) lead i had pretty much given up on the u.s. only in the last 10 meters did i think they had a chance.
  6. wow, i'm the unofficial swimming commentator here at work, because the audio is off on the TVs, and i was telling people that the race was pretty much over - it was the world record holder with more than a half second lead. lezak definitely had the swim of his life - you get roughly 0.8-0.9 of a second "help" from your relay start. so lezak's relay split of 46.06 is completely insane - from a flat start, it would've been more than half a second faster than the old world record. SUCK IT, FROGS.
  7. likewise, where did 2008 (insert any current cardinal here) come from?
  8. most guys take at least half a season after TJS to get back to their previous form - carpenter needed like 2 days.
  9. Why not? Ranks second in career SLG% as a Cub, 4th in runs created, 3rd in adjusted batting runs, 3rd in batting wins, 3rd in extra base hits. Sosa is one of only six players with 600 career homeruns. Sosa is a no doubter as one of the top three Cubs of all-time, despite your emotional feelings for the player. he's not a no-doubter, and of course his offensive statistics are better than guys like billy williams, ron santo or cap anson - those guys played when pitching was more dominant than hitting, while sosa played in one of the most extreme offensive periods in history.
  10. yeah natalie coughlin has always been hot. but that's only if you like more athletic body types.
  11. i think bud selig was right in wanting to contract the natspos. what a worthless organization.
  12. hahaha gabe krapler
  13. haha 4 pitch walk to lead off the inning... this one is OVA
  14. too bad he didn't blow his knee out, then ned would've put him back out there.
  15. hahahahaha gas can gagne
  16. Oh, I have no doubt... i do, our pitching has been really good and their lineup is really terrible.
  17. i sure hope he's better at sports than anthony morelli.
  18. yeah, usually there will be a couple of "stars" who sit out the prelim heat - this morning, jason lezak and phelps did not swim in the prelim - and then come in for the finals. if they win a gold medal, everyone in the prelim and the final gets a gold medal. for the northwestern folks, matt grevers temporarily owns a world record (as part of the 400 free relay in prelims) and an olympic record (100 back). those won't be records for long, but it has to be a cool feeling anyway.
  19. what a great stat... this pretty much sums up the dusty baker era; the cubs took a pathetic 2.44 walks per game in 2006 are now on pace to increase that by more than 50%. and it's not like it took long to fix either; just get rid of the moron who says "it's called hitting not walking" and bring in a manager who actually understands the value of getting on base.
  20. thank God, that's 10 home runs that won't be hit against us.
  21. i'm not really sure who said that, but they're dumb. in terms of dominance, phelps' events probably rank: 200 fly 400 IM 200 free (rest of the world is pretty weak in this right now) 200 IM (still, phelps has most of the top times in history here, but lochte is a threat) 100 fly anyway, this is what he did in melbourne last year - nobody really cared then, because it's swimming that's not in the olympics, but phelps was blowing away his own records left and right, many of them by more than a second. he was more than a body length ahead of the WR line in the 200 fly - and that's a race that takes less than 2 minutes! in melbourne he would've won 8 golds if one of the relay swimmers in the prelims hadn't jumped in his leg and DQ'ed the u.s.
  22. i couldn't stand gary hall. basically all he did was sit around and get high for 3 years, then start training for a few months, get in the pool and make the olympic team. actually i don't like sprinters in general - they're often cocky meatheads who don't work half as hard as everyone else in the pool - but hall was even worse than most.
  23. yeah basically for every guy in the card system there are 20 guys in another system who don't turn out to be great players at age 30.
  24. Micah Hoffpauir - Von Joshua success story also, hoffpauir has 78 RBI in 51 games
  25. i don't know what has gotten into him this year, but maybe the cubs should give him a shot if fatty ward continues to not hit. iowa has 6 runs on 6 solo homers - 3 by hoffpauir, 1 by pie, 1 by dubois and 1 by.... mitch atkins
