  1. It's just a slump, as I said on page one when everyone laughed at me. We'll be fine. strange times indeed, when UMFan is acting as the voice of reason.
  2. How many starting hitters hit .366 let alone pitchers? How much more valuable does 70 ABs make Zambrano than say Dempster? Much. yes you're right, especially when the difference in production is very large. still, zambrano may be marginally better than dempster when taking offense into account, but i don't see how that could make him an MVP candidate. i'd have no qualms about voting for pedro as MVP during his peak years, but the starter has to be really great to be a contender, IMO.

  4. yeah, our game threads at the end of that season were like 3 pages long. people stopped caring about the cubs, for good reason. they did a terrible job of player development and acquisition, and the manager was a stubborn, incompetent fool who probably ruined the two most talented pitcher that have come into this organization in the past decade. i'll always follow the cubs, but if they're not going to do the things to put a good product on the field, then i'm not going to waste my time and money on them. there's a reason that i've bought cubs gear and paid for MLB.tv the last two years; it's because they've actually shown a commitment to doing things the right way.
  5. hey cashman, maybe it's not a great idea to give $10M a year to an oft-injured pitcher with 2 above-average ERA+ seasons in 7 years.
  6. if dusty has any brains (he doesn't) it should be PH, PH, PH to face woody.
  7. i really don't think the cubs have the money to afford tex, and i don't know that he'd sign with a team that intends to use him in the outfield.
  8. i dunno if you can bench him... you kinda just have to keep him low in the order and hope he starts to hit again. he's basically performing at his 10th percentile PECOTA projection. nobody though he'd be this bad.
  9. men's field hockey is on UHD. men should not be playing field hockey.
  10. boy if fukudome is really a .750 OPS player, that's really going to be a horrendous contract.
  11. maury wills, 104 steals. END OF DISCUSSION
  12. z struggling with control... great managing on the steal attempt there. or corey is an idiot and ran on his own.
  13. fukudome, colvin and veal for sizemore. Indians won't take Fuku's contract. i know, i was kidding. guess i should've gone the "overwhelm with mediocrity" trade route by piling on guys like pignatiello, hoffpauir, hart, etc.
  14. cubs on the year are hitting .370/.374/.553/.927 when they put the first pitch of the AB into play (or are HBP). but yeah, you don't want everyone hacking at the first pitch like they did that inning.
  15. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/attend.shtml The Cubs were 5th in the NL in attendance in 2006, and fell just short of the attendance record to that point. (A new record was set in 2007) you know as well as i do that a number or those tickets were sold well in advance. by september of that year, the real attendance wasn't exceeding 30,000, even if the paid attendance was above that mark.
  16. well the reds are below .500, so actually only beating them by 2 runs results in a loss in the standings.
  17. now i know the expos has extenuating circumstances (thinking they wouldn't exist in a few months), but seriously, trading cliff lee, grady sizemore and brandon phillips for three months of bartolo colon has to be one of the worst trades ever, doesn't it?
  18. fukudome, colvin and veal for sizemore.
  19. a starting pitcher should only be considered for the MVP if he is overwhelmingly good, IMO. and Z hasn't even been the best starter on his team, let alone the entire league.
  20. you don't have to like him, but since he's the best shortstop in the organization, you probably should at least accept him.
  21. 30 strikes, 29 balls. good-hitting teams will take advantage of that. let's go, z.
  22. wow yesterday's game thread is locked already? i hate losing to dusty baker's reds too, but that must've been some meltdown over a loss that narrowed our lead to only five games with just over a month to play.
  23. yeah amazing what can happen when you play the best goalie rather than a rusty 38 year old, huh?
