    The fundamental difference is that there are tons of guys capable of being commissioner of baseball, and only a handful capable of being major-league players. there were some people who did an awful job as commissioner. i think you're underestimating the importance and difficulty of that position.

    not to mention that soto was an all-star and rookie of the year. to break out from that he'd have to hit about 40 HRs and be in the MVP running.

    college of charleston used to have that problem when they were really good in the '90s. they would end up with like 3 losses but if they didn't win the big south they had to sweat it out on selection sunday because their rpi was so bad.

    My point is Davidson is playing nothing but awful teams the rest of the way. They'd have to lose at least 3 of those games to miss out on being an at large. The chances of them losing 3 games the rest of the way is pretty much the chances that Stephon Curry gets in a really bad car accident. And even then, it's unlikely. i don't think so. if they lose 1 game and then flop in the semis of their tourney they end up at something like 26-5, with 1 or maybe two wins over a top 100 rpi team. there have been good teams in terrible conferences that have been left out with 3/4 losses.

    i wouldn't say davidson is a gimme. they've beaten west virginia and then a whole pile of bad teams. i'm more impressed by a team like michigan st being 17-4 than i am davidson being 18-3.

    rich hill has a lot more to do with that than jim hendry. the cubs have certainly destroyed pie's trade value though he hasn't helped himself either.

    i wouldn't assume that the game at iowa is an auto-win considering that we should've lost to them at home. michigan and iowa are pretty much equally bad. penn state should beat wisconsin at home; at this point that'd be a bad loss for a team hoping to make the tourney. they probably can go something like: wins: indiana, wisconsin, illinois, minnesota, either @michigan or @iowa, losses: @purdue, @illinois, @mich/@iowa, @osu 5-4 in the last 9 games wouldn't be bad; that's 22-9 going into the big ten tourney and if they win one game they're probably in the field of 64 (65).

    how catchers OPS 1.100 at AA when they're 22 years old? not a lot.

    honestly you have to take those pecota comps with a grain of salt when a guy hasn't even reached full-season ball yet. that being said, wieters is going to be a beast and we should have picked him. his top pecota comp is mark teixeira, who is a great hitter regardless of position.

    most catchers don't fall off a cliff. a lot of great catchers like piazza, bench and berra stayed good even after they stopped being elite. if wieters is the best catcher in baseball for 5 years and then ends up being better than 80% of the catchers in the game for another 5 to 10 years, that's still a hall of fame career. and he could also end up moving to 1B or DH later in his career; he projects to have an impact bat no matter where he plays. he could be one of the best-hitting catchers in history if he stays at that position, but he's got a great enough bat that he can play 1B or corner OF and still be an excellent hitter relative to others at the same position. in my fantasy land where i'm running the cubs, they drafted wieters and he's ready for the majors now. they traded lee in the offseason and ate $5M annually, which still freed up $8M a year for the next 3 years. as a result they kept derosa and resigned kerry wood, and we're going into the season with a deep bullpen, good bench and a hitter who projects to be better than lee for the next 3 years playing 1B.

    Dude, that was a jab at me, and I gave it back. Truff, nows these "recruiting rumors" about the SEC he likes to throw out isn't limited to my conference. Those rumors are rampant through all the major conferences. once again you're delusional. the sec teams are known for being the worst offenders when it comes to ncaa guidelines. in 2002, 8 of the 12 sec programs had been punished for major violations; no other conference was anywhere close to that. i think the big xii was next and they had something like 4. yes there are isolated allegations within other conferences but it's nothing as "rampant" as the SEC.

    i love the recruiting battles in the sec. it's always exciting to hear which recruit's dad is wearing what clothing and what color his brand new hummer is.

    yeah they have three auto-losses (@mich st, @purdue, @illinois) and only one auto-win left (vs indiana). "auto-losses"? Jamelle Cornley does not have that term in his dictionary. I bet you they take at least 1 of them, maybe even 2. Starting with Michigan St. /pats self on back don't lie, you have the Gray's Sports ALmanac 2000-2050 sitting in the back seat of your car, don't you?

    apparently that game at michigan state was no auto-loss.

    vince carter hurt his ankle and missed a lot of the 2nd half but the sixers still lost at home to the nets. the reason? they scored 25 points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter, and missed their last 18 shots in a row. that's pretty awesome.

    by the way, if you're in any fantasy leagues with average fans, wieters will be an incredible steal. i don't think there's much hype about him being one of the top five catchers except from sites like BP.

    I'd love it if Fontenot does that. I kinda doubt it, but hope I'm very wrong. he was way better than those numbers last year, so i don't see why you'd be that skeptical.

    i'm definitely not using an apple the next time i play basketball, since they don't bounce very well.
