  1. i love december brett favre. tis the season for giving, i suppose.
  2. it's not like he was pumping his body full of roids; he was taking a stimulant because of lingering effects from a concussion. plus they're apparently looking at signing him for one year, and his numbers have been very consistent the past few seasons. there's no reason to think he'll fall off a cliff in 2010, except for the odd tradition of moderately-productive veterans to sign with the cubs and then get old in about 5 minutes.
  3. Who do you want? It's 4 top 10 teams. Unless Penn State gets selected this should be the best group of BCS teams they've ever had. I think TCU vs. Georgia Tech is a really interesting matchup. no kidding... if those games all suck then you're pretty much just looking forward to like 2 bowl games. personally i'd prefer tcu and boise st to play bcs conference teams than to play each other. apparently the fiesta bowl likes the idea of the tcu-boise st matchup, but to me it just seems like you're having the kids from the mid-major conference go play in the corner rather than possibly making a team like florida or iowa/psu or ga tech look bad.

  5. i just wanted the OU fan trifecta of usc, florida and texas losing in the same day. After this miserable season, i think i deserve it. also, if i had seen tebow and mccoy both cry tonight, i would have [expletive] in my pants there's a decent chance meph would have offed himself.
  6. i really think tcu could give bama a run for their money. texas... probably not unless mcelroy melts down.
  7. knew that was going to be a really good one. ga tech-clemson is also a good game; way more entertaining than boring texas-nebraska. demaryius thomas has pretty marginal speed, but physically he's a beast. he kinda reminds me of USC's mike williams. seems like a guy who might struggle to get open in the nfl but would probably be a terrific tight end.
  8. cool that stevens is fired; since the flyers are apparently granting wishes to me, how about sitting dan carcillo down for a few games since he's a complete idiot and probably cost us a shot at winning tonight.
  9. peter laviolette is replacing stevens. he was probably my top choice of the names out there; thankfully we've gone outside the organization rather than giving the job to craig berube or a dud like bill barber.
  10. why is that? he has a little pop and gets on base pretty well, plays very good defense, runs the bases well, and plays with enthusiasm and energy. he's not great but he's very good and a fan favorite. i think there would be a revolt in philly if he were traded at this stage of his career. i really don't think the phillies are trading any pieces of their offense, but if they did, i could see it being werth ahead of victorino, since werth is due $7.5M next year and then is a free agent. it's more realistic that they go into next year with a 1-2 of lee and hamels, blanton, happ, and maybe they give moyer another shot or just sign a low-priced free agent to fill out the rotation. the phillies are still built to win right now and it doesn't really make a lot of sense for them to deal off someone like victorino or werth without getting a good, proven SP in return.
  11. I read on another board that NHL Network is reporting you got your wish. i'm opening a beer right now to celebrate.
  12. wait cardinal fans would be mystified that one of THEIR players got better after leaving town? because we're frequently mystified by the parade of scrubs turning into usable players in st. louis.
  13. we definitely should beat algeria. my fear with slovenia is them boring us to death and them winning 1-0 or playing to a scoreless draw, then ending up in tie-breaker with slovenia at the end. on another note, france annoys me just like they annoy everyone i wish people would stop writing stuff like this: no, france MIGHT not have been in the world cup, and ireland MIGHT have.
  14. Never happened. The host has always advanced. i have to think that south africa is the worst team to ever host a world cup, though.
  15. uruguay can definitely make it out. south africa would really surprise me though, even with the home field advantage. they probably needed a team like slovakia or slovenia out of Pot D, maybe a team like paraguay from Pot C, and/or a north korea/new zealand from Pot B. if they got 2 of those 3 things they'd have a decent shot. instead they got one of the two teams in Pot D that nobody wanted to play, uruguay is pretty solid, and mexico may be the best team in Pot D.
  16. probably every team that has won a world series had a bad contract on it. the cubs get ripped for it because they sign guys to bad contracts with alarming regularity. even if you really think that polanco's contract is a bad one, the phillies have been pretty smart about keeping contracts relatively short and cost-effective, which the cubs do not do, at all.
  17. if the u.s. had gotten put where north korea did, this thread would have exploded in anger.
  18. with current FIFA ranking: A: South Africa (86), Mexico (15), Uruguay (19), France (7) B: Argentina (8), Nigeria (22), South Korea (52), Greece (12) C: England (9), United States (14), Algeria (28), Slovenia (33) D: Germany (6), Australia (21), Serbia (20), Ghana (37) E: Netherlands (3), Denmark (26), Japan (43), Cameroon (11) F: Italy (4), Paraguay (30), New Zealand (77), Slovakia (34) G: Brazil (2), North Korea (84), Ivory Coast (16), Portugal (5) H: Spain (1), Honduras (38), Chile (17), Switzerland (18) i'd rank the groups, from most to least difficult: G, B, D, A, H, C, E, F
  19. A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France B: Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece C: England, United States, Algeria, Slovenia D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia G: Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal H: Spain, Hondruas, Chile, Switzerland
