  1. i think that DH's make, on average, more than any other position in the game. so the mlbpa will never allow the dh to go away.
  2. By who? The media? Number of times John Lackey has been in the top 10 of Cy Young voting: 1 You convinced me to look him up. I was shocked at what I found. Without looking, I could have sworn his stats would have had him up there among the elite prior to his injury, but he really only has had one REALLY decent season. that's understating things quite a bit. he's generally good for a FIP in the mid 3's, which makes him a good #2 starter.
  3. Let me guess... because you heard Rob say that earlier in this thread? In fact I believe those were his exact words. or maybe he just formed this opinion on his own. jeez.
  4. i'm surprised that any ohio state players are actually attending classes.
  5. he makes a good point that i hadn't considered - boeheim will not allow syracuse to leave the big east. syracuse is a basketball school and boeheim is syracuse basketball.
  6. they can't put 35 ncaa tourney games on the list.
  7. i don't think i'd give a big five-year deal to a pitcher who missed some time in the two most recent seasons with elbow problems. maybe it's nothing but it's concerning.
  8. i'm getting tired of waiting for the flyers to play up to their capability. plus brian boucher sucks.
  9. so the deal appears to be: phillies give up: cliff lee, kyle drabek, michael taylor, travis d'arnaud phillies receive: roy halladay, phillipe aumont, j.c. ramirez, tyson gillies, $6 million blue jays give up: roy halladay, $6 million blue jays receive: kyle drabek, michael taylor, travis d'arnaud mariners give up: phillipe aumont, j.c. ramirez, tyson gillies mariners receive: cliff lee i feel like the phillies make out pretty well here, getting nice prospects from the mariners along with four years of a great pitcher. the blue jays did get drabek but miss out on dominic brown, who i like quite a bit. cliff lee is obviously very good and greatly improves seattle this year, plus they can either get a good return on him at the trade deadline (if they suck) or take the two high picks for him if they're in contention. reasonable deal for all parties.
  10. geaux saints
  11. in all honesty i just hope that ron santo has at least three more years. people with his health history don't tend to get far into old age.
  12. he may be a red sox fan, but he reports on the red sox more than anyone because he knows them better than anyone. sao paolantonio is an eagles reporter who lives in the philly area; espn has him cover the eagles because when he's not reporting on the eagles for espn he's reporting on the eagles for local stations. gammons is in his 60s and just had an aneurysm, it makes sense that he's going to shift to a job that involves less hours and less travel, and cover a team that he knows and roots for. in case anyone missed his "goodbye" from espn, here it is: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=gammons_peter&id=4734773
  13. that would be 10 conference games; nobody is going to agree to that. i suspect that they'd put michigan and ohio st in opposite sides; they're the two most traditional powers and i think michigan-ohio st is kind of the "dream scenario" for the conference. if pitt were in there, i think a "fair" split would be: michigan michigan st wisconsin northwestern minnesota iowa ohio st pitt penn st indiana purdue illinois sort of splits out like northwest and southeast. each team could play all five teams in their division every year plus three others from the other side, with certain teams guaranteed to play each year to preserve rivalries (michigan-ohio st, illinois-northwestern, indiana-michigan st)... they could throw out the bogus trophies/"rivalry games" like penn st-minnesota and penn st-michigan st, for all i care.
  14. if the saints beat the cowboys next week, we'll win the division if we win our home games with the 49ers and broncos. we're definitely in the driver's seat now. still, our defense seems too banged up (linebackers are awful) to beat the saints or vikings in the playoffs.
  15. bitter eli manning face.
  16. D- for the refs in that first half.
  17. My vote counts for more because I'm so awesome. you are alone in that assessment. Good thing the only person's opinion that I care about sided with me. I heard he is a really really really ridiculously good looking guy. the photo you posted would argue otherwise.
  18. most obvious PI ever. get your hand out of your pants ref.
  19. My vote counts for more because I'm so awesome. you are alone in that assessment.
  20. nice tackling assholes.
  21. i would like to vote for "leave thread open so that the bum keeps embarrassing himself" to cancel out the bum's vote.
  22. Might want to do research on what sports actually turn a profit. Football would be at the bottom of the list. They cost millions for 90% of the schools and only the top 35-50 actually make money each year. Women's basketball, after men's basketball, averages the most profit for a large majority of schools. I wrote a big story on this topic for our student paper and FOI'ed a lot of documents detailing what was spent and what was earned. the top 35-50 make massive amounts of money, though. penn state supports its entire athletic department with the profits from football. the other side of the coin is i-aa football and a some of the lousy teams from minor conferences in I-A. i know that holy cross loses something like $1.5M on football each year. it's not exactly a surprise when i-aa schools cut football; if it's not generating much alumni support or interest then it's kind of pointless.
  23. well, this has been a nice start to the game.
