  1. to further illustrate the yawning academic gap between texas and the rest of the conference, here are the endowments of the big xii schools: now here are the endowments of the big ten schools: plus university of chicago is part of the research/resource-sharing program, so you can add in their $5.0B endowment. aside from aTm, none of the schools in the big xii are in the same ballpark as texas as far as academics or research impact.
  2. it's not all that surprising. the population of the states that comprise the big 10 is 67 million; the big xii states' population is 46.4 million and more than half of that is texas. the big ten has its own tv network, much better academics, much more tradition and more prestigious programs. i guess what it comes down to for texas - do you want to remain a gigantic fish in a relatively small pond close to home, or be a big fish in a big pond that's farther away? yes, texas has it good with its current big xii agreement, but the tables would have to be tilted completely in their direction to get tv revenue that rivals that of the big ten.
  3. yeah i think tim was being a little too strict on his academic requirements. penn state was a great get for the big ten, and is a fine school academically, but really not much different than, say, georgia, georgia tech or washington. actually some of those might be better schools. i think you could definitely add schools like usc, cal, stanford, boston college, kansas and miami to the list. really, if you could blast texas off and set the state down where kentucky or the dakotas are, wouldn't this be a no-brainer? texas is a great academic school in a conference with a lot of mediocre academic institutions. they have by far the best athletic program, including great athletic facilities and infrastructure for non-revenue sports - the same cannot be said for most other big xii programs. they bring a ton of viewers (basically the entire state of texas) while much of the rest of the big xii is fairly sparsely-populated. they're a huge fish in a crappy pond, and would be a better fit in the big ten if not for geographical concerns.
  4. definitely north carolina, off the top of my head.
  5. Yeah, I can't imagine it being significantly harder to get from Penn State to Texas than it is to get to Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa. And what is it, one trip per season? Texas's addition will more than make up the financial difference brought on by taking 12 flights to Austin throughout the year. it's a bigger deal for texas' athletes having to fly a long way every time they have a road game. reading that article on frankthetank, i wonder why notre dame doesn't consider the big ten more seriously. if it's true that notre dame is making half what [expletive] purdue and indiana make each year on football revenues, it would probably behoove notre dame's administration to join the big ten and tell their fans and alums to suck it up.
  6. i guess my biggest concern is for non-revenue sports, but penn state athletic teams pretty much fly everywhere (ohio st is the closest team in the conference, and they're 5 hours away) so texas would just be doing the same thing. athletically this would be a great thing for the conference; texas has great athletics pretty much across the board. they would probably win big ten baseball for about 50 years in a row, though.
  7. which is why VoR eats him up like catnip.
  8. Are you guys going to be "scouts" or "stats people" with Theriot's defense? :D mostly i hear on this board that theriot's defense is God-awful, so NSBB will be the scouts crowd. theriot will bring UZR as his support.
  9. the cubs will have nsbb in the room to evaluate theriot's defense during the hearing.
  10. ovechkin actually can play defense really well when he tries at it, which he usually doesn't do except for the playoffs. but he puts so much pressure on the defense when he breaks on turnovers that i don't see the point of him playing positional defense that most forwards do. he's a +41 in 51 games; might as well keep doing what he's doing.
  11. God the flyers blow. apparently losing mike knuble and joffrey lupul was too much for the offense to overcome.
  12. he has some black marks (willful ignorance of steroid issue, all-star game meaning something, trying to contract the twins) but baseball is awash in money and has gone a long time without a labor stoppage. he's done a good job as commissioner.
  13. Pecota seems to have messed up badly and no one at BP seems to know how to fix it with Nate Silver no longer involved. i'm guessing he'd help them fix the problems, but you're right, this year's edition seemed to have a lot of bugs in it when it was released, some of which have been fixed and some that are still issues.
  14. congratulations to the 17 die-hard saints fans and the 40 million who have become huge fans in the last 2 years.
  15. the twins payroll is almost 100 million now... in related news carl pohlad just died.
  16. i'd be fine with that, but only if you are referring to the football team and not the shitty band.
  17. We could hit the 80's with "Hall and Oats" We could do somebody from the 90's but the great groups either aren't together or their lead committed suicide/died of a drug over-dose Why would you put quotes around Hall & Oates? he was actually referring to hall and oats, a band consisting of former outfielder mel hall and a box of quaker oats
  18. ah right, didn't see the part about it being a position player. i don't see the point of a hall of fame if you only let willie mays and ted williams and babe ruth in. ryne sandberg is one of the 10 best second basemen in the history of a game that goes back 125 years. i'd say that make him pretty damn notable.
  19. late night out before one of his starts and it created a lot of friction with a member of the tennessee coaching staff. most people seem to be of the opinion that it was an isolated incident and not a pattern of poor behavior by him.
  20. yeah, florida and lsu and ohio st and usc (et cetera) are going to attract more talent because they send players to the nfl, have very good coaches, some are located in places that players want to live for a few years... it's never going to be a level playing field because texas and florida and california produce more high school talent, and so on. ok, i mean that it should be level in terms of the rules in the rule book. like, washington shouldn't lose out on a recruit to usc because usc boosters have promised the recruit's parents a new house and washington's athletic department won't allow that to happen. the rules may not be great but they're there, and should be enforced until they cease to exist.
  21. yeah i haven't seen any positive comments about leino from wings fans. i think the wings needed to clear some cap space with franzen coming back, so that was one of the motivations for trading leino. i know they were high on him coming into this year, and he had nice stats in finland and in the AHL, but the criticism seems to be that he's slow and tends to float too much. i figure he still has some upside so it's worth a shot. OKT is terrible and shouldn't be used as anything more than a depth defenseman. i'm pretty sure this is a sign that we'd rather use any of our random AHL d-men than use OKT when people get hurt.
  22. Let's talk about lazy. Is being lazy not reading anything said by Brees or Sean Payton and just assuming stuff based on absolutely nothing but your own ideas or is lazy reading about why Brees decided to sign and watching interviews where Payton and Brees talk about it? ESPN the Mag just had a story on this an issue ago. Payton was taking Brees to the airport and he was going to fly to Miami. Brees said he was leaning towards Miami but then Payton missed a turn and got into a neighborhood that was destroyed (claims it wasn't on purpose). Brees saw the damage and told Payton he was going to sign with the Saints because he felt a calling to help the city. So yes Brees signed because of Katrina. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-breesdecision020110&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
  23. from austin, texas.
