  1. any group with sarge matthews should not be #3... he's God-awful.
  2. i think better goalie technique and better goalie equipment have a lot to do with it. watching classic hockey games from the 70s and 80s, giving up a goal on unscreened shot from the top of the circles was not considered a softie back then. now it is. the area of open net to shoot at looks much larger 20-30 years ago than today.
  3. i loved when cynosure freaked out after a tough cubs loss to the cardinals and accused bud selig of rigging the game for the cardinals to win.
  4. oh and lol @ mark recchi: apparently because it's game 7 you ignore the rules of hockey and allow one team to play with an extra player on the ice. come on mark, that's one of the few penalties that they HAVE to call in these types of games (along with high sticking, which gave the B's their first two goals).
  5. barney should be on next year's team as a backup middle infielder
  6. the part about possibly winning the eastern conference championship is exciting, but i've seen that before. what i'd like is for one of my teams to win a league championship since none of them have done it since 1983, and this year's flyers team isn't good enough. i'll enjoy the ride but i still have to be realistic about what they can accomplish.
  7. update on the stanley cup favorite red wings please
  8. i did know what was going on but i turned the game off after lucic scored his second goal. had some work-related e-mails to send and then needed a shower before going out, and by the time i was done all of that the game was tied. the flyers lost games 1, 2 and 3 (watched all of every game), won game 4 (watched parts of it) then won games 5 and 6 (didn't watch either - game 5 i was sleeping before work, game 6 was blacked out and i had to be at home). since the flyers kept playing bad when i had the tv on i turned it off. turned it on after 3-3 and the flyers had an awful PP followed by lots of boston pressure and them hitting the post once. turned it back off immediately. still having a hard time getting excited about the flyers since leighton is lousy and our problem in the playoffs for the last 20 years has been goaltending (plus carter is still out), but even making it this far is pretty cool.
  9. hey it never hurts to pad the OBP with walks in front of the pitcher.
  10. haha the pirates' pythagorean win % coming into today was 8-26 and they just got done scoring 1 run in 3 games against the reds, including being shut out by the awful homer bailey. the cubs are so embarrassing.
  11. who should i root for the rest of the way? i'm torn between the bruins and hawks... guess i'll root for both of them in the conference finals and then figure it out in the stanley cup finals.
  12. way to show up flyers. i hope they release hartnell; i could take his dumbass play when he was scoring 25-30 goals a year but this year he was so awful. just go away.
  13. mineaswell get out the golf clubs. can't complain, the flyers won 5 more games in the playoffs than i thought they would.
  14. way to go hartnell, what a [expletive] moron he is.
  15. not that it matters because the royals stink, but ned yost is a terrible manager.
  16. they easily cleared 60 wins this year? they won 61 and their pythagorean wins were 59. and they were only 2-2 against boston and orlando during the regular season. lebron and mediocre cast can beat up on bad teams but teams with more depth can play with the cavs during the regular season and then game plan to force guys like mo williams and varejao to beat the during a long playoff series.
  17. Certainly possible. I have to remain completely agnostic on the subject, as I don't know enough to have an opinion. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/grantho01.html stats would indicate that during his bulls years, he was one of the best offensive rebounders in the league, one of the best defensive power forwards in the league and was really good at not turning the ball over. plus he shot very well from the field. the cavs don't have anyone who fits that profile as being one of the best in the league at their position, besides lebron anyway.
  18. i don't really get the point of these comments. people have this memory of jordan who would singlehandedly will his team to victory in the playoffs - and yes, he usually took the last shot - but he had good players around him and that's why they won. lebron has mediocre players around him and doesn't win. maybe he's not as good as jordan but it's dumb to denigrate him against a guy who clearly had a better supporting cast. Well, you can argue that the other Cavs players weren't good, but most of the NBA talent evaluators wouldn't agree with you. Obviously, none of them are the Pippen level, but the general feeling seems to be that they had a few guys as good or better than Grant. well then nba talent evaluators have a poor grasp of talent evaluation and no concept of advanced basketball statistics.
  19. i don't really get the point of these comments. people have this memory of jordan who would singlehandedly will his team to victory in the playoffs - and yes, he usually took the last shot - but he had good players around him and that's why they won. lebron has mediocre players around him and doesn't win. maybe he's not as good as jordan but it's dumb to denigrate him against a guy who clearly had a better supporting cast. The comparisons to him were dumb to begin with, so we are taking the stupidity to its logical conclusion. BTW, MJ never failed to win a championship as the #1 seed and LeBron has now done it twice. (He deserves some credit, of course, for getting to the #1 seed to begin with considering his supporting cast, but still.) right but how does this reflect poorly on lebron? once the cavs get deeper into the playoffs they start facing teams whose #2-12 players are better, and they lose. all it says is that one-man teams don't win championships.
  20. i don't really get the point of these comments. people have this memory of jordan who would singlehandedly will his team to victory in the playoffs - and yes, he usually took the last shot - but he had good players around him and that's why they won. lebron has mediocre players around him and doesn't win. maybe he's not as good as jordan but it's dumb to denigrate him against a guy who clearly had a better supporting cast.
  21. If LeBron is at the top of his game they are a tough team to beat. Varejao is really underrated, between Williams, Parker and sometimes Jamison they have a great collection of outside shooters. When they are playing well, they look like they can score every time up the floor, especially if you don't have a good body to slow down James. All he has to do is penatrate and kick out or draw a foul. If the shooters are hitting shots you have to decide weather to double LeBron and let him kick it out or single team him and let him destroy you in the paint. Of course this is a really simplistic way to analyze it, but you get my point. There are no stars on this team, but the team was designed to give LeBron shooters that could make teams pay for doubling him. i dunno, it just seems really obvious to me that once you get past lebron the next four best players in the series play for boston. championship teams of the past never had that; jordan had pippen, kobe had shaq and gasol, duncan had robinson and parker, etc.
  22. i don't know how anyone can watch this series and think lebron is surrounded by good talent. granted he's not playing all that well, but moe williams is a pretty lousy second option, varejao is a pansy, ilgauskas is pretty much useless, shaq is a slow overweight whale, jamison has been terrible there, etc. half their team can't make an open jump shot from 15 feet away, and defensively they've been unable to guard one on one for most of the series. this team is pretty bad w/o lebron.
