  1. the phillies already have placido polanco and have more than $130 million already committed for next year. there is zero chance the phillies even consider him. the angels will have some money, but a lot of their young guys are starting to approach big raise territory.
  2. why because they play the same position? he's way faster than theriot, has good range and a good arm. he might flop but it won't be because of the same reasons that theriot is mediocre.
  3. that seems like an extreme overreaction to a month and a half of good play.
  4. after tonight's game: 48.2 ip, 36 h, 11 er, 3 hr, 14 bb, 68 k, 2.03 era. i think this kid may have a future.
  5. not to mention the leisure suit collars
  6. same here. i certainly like him more if we're talking about a backup for next season. castillo is a hacker with some power and i've always seen it written that he has good defensive tools, but makes too many mental mistakes or gets lazy and doesn't block the ball. he could use another year at iowa; chirinos isn't getting any younger and should get the backup job if he shows up in shape and hits a little in spring training. koyie hill can go the [expletive] away.
  7. not me. 4 BB is 5 IP still sucks. his problem has always been command, both inside and outside the strike zone. 76 pitches, 40 strikes isn't good. if he can hit his spots more often, he'll have a shot. searle: 4.0 ip, 6 h, 6 r, 5 er, 3 bb, 8 k, 1 hr, 1 hbp. way to fill up the stat sheet big guy. hak-ju lee is 3-3 with 2 runs scored. according to the game log, two of the hits were in the infield (1 bunt hit). use that speed buddy.
  8. chirinos has been terrific the last two years, but future every day big leaguer seems a bit of a stretch. he's been in the system nearly 10 years... he should be able to hit at AA at this point. definitely a backup option if he has a solid glove, though.
  9. baseball prospectus put the cubs' playoff odds at about 1% coming into today. you're welcome.
  10. vitters is now 3-3 with 2 doubles, a homer and 5 rbi  carpenter has 4 ip, 3 h, 0 r, 4 bb, 4 k. cool on the k's but ugh on the walks. 87 pitches in 4 innings isn't so hot either.
  11. vitters has doubled and homered in his first two ABs tonight. jackson isn't playing. junior lake has a home run... hopefully he keeps it up.
  12. i defended howry a lot in his bad year as a cub, but the dude is done. velocity is down 2-3 mph on all his pitches, he's not striking out and his home run rate sucks. just release him already.
  13. i'm glad only because he's likely to exercise his player option after this season, and i don't want the cubs paying 14.6M next year to a guy who doesn't have it any more. we already have enough bad contracts. That's hardly a bad contract. it is if he can't hit any more.
  14. i'm glad only because he's likely to exercise his player option after this season, and i don't want the cubs paying 14.6M next year to a guy who doesn't have it any more. we already have enough bad contracts.
  15. good pitching today: dolis: 5 ip, 3 h, 2 er, 0 bb, 5 k, 1 hr mcnutt: 5 ip, 2 h, 1 r, 0 er, 0 bb, 5 k, 1 hbp struck: 6 ip, 3 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 9 k coleman wasn't good, but whatever. chirinos is 3-3 with a double, homer and 5 rbi. ideally he should be playing every day at AAA but castillo is already doing that. chirinos should definitely get a cup of coffee in september and get some playing time when soto is off.
  16. man look at that year he had in 1982 as a 20 year old in AA. i'd have to change my pants if the cubs had a prospect like that.
  17. Not questioning the AGE for Moyer, but is that WHIP correct? It sure is. Only by pitching half your games in Philly can you maintain that kind of WHIP and still have a pedestrian ERA more than half of his home runs have been allowed on the road.
  18. i feel like berman wasn't this bad 10 or 20 years ago, or maybe it's just that his act has become so old and tired by this point.
  19. i thought canadians were nice
  20. I'm not sure if Callis is aware that Archer's so called inconsistent command has been getting more consistent every year. 2008 - 115.1 IP, 106 K/84 BB 2009 - 109 IP, 119 K/66 BB 2010 - 84.1 IP, 92 K/33 BB he may not be, but 33 BB in 84 IP is not really that great. certainly the big strides are something to be excited about.
  21. when i heard that john wooden died, i walked around the rest of the day in a fog. i mean, who knew that a 100 year old man would just drop dead like that.
  22. ah drew rundle... more money well spent
  23. i've heard of the california league messing up hitters because guys hit home runs so easily in some of those bandboxes and then start pressing at the next level because they're not hitting as much.
