  1. nice control samardzija... 4 walks in the first inning
  2. like a SP not named lilly (because he's hopefully getting traded) or silva (because he's fat and probably even slower than soto)
  3. That's what I would have thought before the Haren trade as well. I would have laughed if I was told Haren would be traded for a package including a 30 year old pitcher with an xFIP close to 4.7 who strikes out around 5 batters per game. I'd be stunned if they were looking to spin Haren off and if they valued Lee that highly, but I was stunned they got him for a package built around Joe Saunders as well. i can guarantee you there are a couple of teams that are pissed off that the d'backs only got that in return because they could have easily trumped the angels' offer without too much damage to their system.
  4. most people probably haven't noticed because the team is terrible and irrelevant, but the d'backs have a bullpen that is so bad that baseball prospectus has evaluated them as the worst bullpen in at least 60 years and, since bullpen work wasn't that common before 1950, essentially the worst bullpen ever. here are some of the ugly numbers: record: 9-20 ERA: 6.50 (the next-worst bullpen ERA is 4.99!!! league average is 4.03) BB/9 IP: 4.73 (second-worst in mlb) BAA: .296 (second-worst in mlb, league average is .253) OBPA: .377 (worst by .013) SLGA: .474 (worst by .020) OPSA: .851 (worst by .033) Save %: 56 H/9 IP: 10.63 HR: 41 (in 270 IP... that's BAD) WHIP: 1.71!!! (worst by .09, league average is 1.39) K/BB: 1.46 (worst; league average 2.09) K/9 IP: 6.90 (actually only 23rd) comparing this to the padres, who have the best bullpen in the game. the padres are better by: 3.66 in ERA (there are 10 TEAMS that have a bullpen ERA of 3.66 or better) 2.15 BB/9 IP .083 in BAA .103 in OBPA .140 in SLGA .243 in OPSA 16 HR 0.65 WHIP 2.32 K/BB 2.84 K/9 IP
  5. he's really a hacker at heart and loves to go after the first pitch. i don't have a problem with it because he's killing it when swinging at the first pitch, but i don't think the walks will really come unless he fills out and drives the ball more frequently. still, he makes contact so well, and hard contact, that he shouldn't be a low obp player. he should be able to hit .300 regularly, and it's hard to have a mediocre obp hitting .300 unless you absolutely refuse to take a walk.
  6. his babip is almost .400 this year... since the start of june his line is .426/.460/.761/1.221 with a .458 babip. not much more to say about that... it's insane. speaking of guys who have been extremely good this year, how about miggy cabrera? .350/.423/.653 this year. age 27 season plus giving up the booze = going bonkers. would've been really nice if we had a better minor league system (and didn't have derrek lee) the year the marlins put him on the market.
  7. drop manny ramirez, add jose bautista (should've done this weeks ago)
  8. dennys reyes and rich garces have to be related somehow
  9. i don't think it's a salary dump... they certainly have enough to pay him for two more months. they want to deal him because they know he's gone after this year and want to upgrade their rotation using a trade chip who's good and would be a desirable rental to a playoff team.
  10. wait why would they trade haren when they just got him?
  11. wonder if they parked their double-wides outside the city and took the train in
  12. man hunter ackerman (this year's 4th round pick) has been God-awful so far.
  13. haha so lucky. walkoff by starlin would make my day.
  14. schlitter is really not a good pitcher. at all. it's pretty bad that he's on the major league roster; it's extremely bad that he's facing the heart of a lineup in a tie game.
  15. bad pitcher gives up hits and runs, tune in for more at 11
  16. haren is having a shitty year... i'm sure they would have gotten a lot more if they'd dealt him in the offseason.
  17. not thrilled about archer's walks but he still had the k's and the nice GO/FO ratio (10:2) richard jones has 29 rbi in 35 games with boise. i love his k/bb ratio this year... 66/5. that's awesome. except for darwin barney (0-for-5) everyone in iowa's lineup has/had at least 2 hits, including casey coleman.
  18. he was removed after getting hit by a pitch; the SB was earlier in the game.
  19. :D meh, he struck out twice and didn't walk once... bad game
  20. saw this in bill simmons' mailbag and it made me laugh:
  21. was that seriously the offer??? if so, that is one of the worst trade proposals i've ever heard. that's like something that an unabashed homer would propose on the espn message boards.
