i suppose samardzija could have come in for the 6th and 7th then you just waste grabow in the 8th/9th, but then each of those guys is not available tomorrow. as it is they should send down stevens and call up someone else since stevens is done for a while. it would have been an easy transition from stevens to samardzija since neither one can throw strikes.
Assuming his velocity is back after last night's performance, I hope he gets the callup for Tuesday night. We need some serious help in the 4/5 spot right now and he may give us the best chance to bridge the gap until Wells/Cashner come back. i don't. he still might be a pretty good prospect (was adequate last year at age 22 in a hitter's league) and is still overcoming a tired arm or something along those lines. you don't need him coming up with the risk of getting knocked around and losing confidence. just bite the bullet, start coleman and hope the other team hits the ball at our fielders.
It's Jeff Stevens... Ugh...I don't care. A manager is supposed to help protect the health of his players. He shouldn't take gross negligence with somebody's arm just because they're unimportant to the team. 89 pitches for a pitcher coming off 1 day rest from a 2 inning outing who is also not stretched out is cruel. There's nothing the player can do at that point besides go out and do his job and its not right. i'm torn, because the alternative is using players who can actually contribute to the success of this year's team, and is it really better to be piling up innings on the arms of a kerry wood or a carlos marmol because jeff stevens is getting tired?
part of it is control and part of it is that he has fringy stuff and it's hard to feel confident in it, so he's going to nibble a lot. either way, he doesn't have much margin for error. basically casey coleman's ceiling is jason marquis and his floor is the multitude of pitchers who can barely touch 90 mph and routinely get hammered in the major leagues.
he won his first start since the incident. frankly when they have road games, if opposing sound technicians don't play jane's addiction's "been caught stealing" as his at bat music, they should be ashamed of themselves.
so it's a roughing penalty, two minutes. if you suspend on that then you have to suspend every time a player makes contact with an opposing player's head.
to play where? the cubs already have soriano, byrd, colvin, fukudome. obviously reed johnson can go away, but they can't just call up jackson and have him sit around. i wouldn't be opposed to byrd going away.
I know it isn't. Making money is the point of the playoffs. I'm just saying I don't like seeing wild-card teams get to play for a title every other year just because Bud is desperate to make sure the Yankees and Red Sox are always both in the playoffs. Yes it would be much better to continue having a significantly lower percentage of teams making the postseason than pretty much every professional sports league, and to have a team like the red sox regularly missing the playoffs despite winning more games than like 90% of the teams in the league.
what i don't get is, how come you have this fetish for the brad snyders/micah hoffpauirs/scott lahairs of the world, yet you hate jr mathes? he's in his late 20s and occupying a roster spot just like those AAAA position players.
mcnutt kinda sucked but at least the scouting report says he had good stuff. junior lake seems to have given back whatever gains he made in discipline last year, as he now has 0 BBs and 14 Ks in 14 games. plus 8 errors playing mostly out of position at SS. yuck.
