  1. if starling is talking about harper money then it's not worth it. he's not THAT good a prospect and this draft is deep enough that you don't need to shell out mega-bucks for a starling when there are other really good prospects that will be available at that pick (and then in the later rounds too)
  2. ok i know c-springs is a hitter's park but come on iowa, this is ridiculous. 5 home runs allowed by coello yesterday, and 40 runs allowed in 3 games so far (two of which were 7 innings long). so 40 runs allowed in 23 innings. awesome.
  3. i say take him, if anyone else wanted him they would have/should have requested that he be added.
  4. i haven't made a trade in like 4 days, someone make me an offer.
  5. well i hope they used a towel to clean up after they were done.
  6. casey coleman sucks at getting major league hitters out.
  7. plus if jackson becomes a legitimate major league starter down the road, you've started the clock a year early on him, costing you money. zambrano has missed time to injury in recent years. wells and cashner have each missed time this year. so it's not like you're likely to pitch davis once or twice and then have no use for him the rest of the season.
  8. how long until the cubs' mediocrity beats the enthusiasm out of him?
  9. hopefully he can face the cubs, i seem to remember a doug davis with completely mediocre stuff faring very well against the cubs.
  10. this had better not be the same "family matter" that manny ramirez had
  11. man anytime an athlete screws up off the field mariotti would whine and criticize that person to no end. what a hypocritical douche.
  12. Wtf has happened to John lackey? I know he's overpaid and all, but now he is just [expletive] awful. I think he has a negative score for the season, which frankly is hard to do.
  13. and now a run thanks to the scraptastic trio of punto, delsclaso or whoever he is, and theriot, probably three of the least talented players in baseball history. awesome.
  14. pretty good so far for austin kirk - 5 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 1 k. he's been a pleasant surprise to this point.
  15. too bad randy wells isn't healthy, he could probably serve as the backup catcher... not much dropoff on defense and probably better offensively than koyie [expletive] hill.
  16. related question, can logan watkins pitch?
  17. I'm not a Hendry fan but if all he has given up was two middle relievers thats probably pretty good in the grand scheme of things. If you want to be upset that he gave up too much in a trade be so about Nolasco or the guys in the garza trade that may come back to bite us. except it's not. he did give up good prospects for a fungible outfielder with no skills other than speed and decent hitting ability. the jury is still out on the garza trade but i think he gave up too much there. it goes back to his inability to properly evaluate players. blevins was a legitimate prospect and he gave him up for a catcher who promised to provide replacement-level production, when we already had soto sitting around destroying AAA. then he traded another effective middle reliever for two non-prospects, and lo and behold that middle reliever was one of the best middle relievers in the game in 2009. these might seem like relatively minor mistakes individually, but then when you consider that he's pays a guy like grabow twice as much as mike wuertz to be much less effective, you start to figure out why the cubs are completely mediocre.
  18. it doesn't help when you piss away useful young arms like wuertz and jerry blevins for basically nothing.
  19. i'd start a fecal league standings thread, but i don't even think the cubs will do great in that either. just a mediocre and boring team.
  20. probably not, but he's a point guard who shoots a lot, so that's not a huge shock.
  21. well they don't walk enough and don't hit for much power, so with those things in mind, it's not that hard to lose games when you outhit the opponent. Actually, many of those losses they have walked more than the opponent as well. The number of extra base hits is very low. However, the main issues are: 1. Horrible approaches with the pitcher in trouble. 2. Bad defense (mental and physical). 3. Bad baserunning. 4. Grounding into double plays. the cubs have the second fewest walks among NL teams.
  22. well they don't walk enough and don't hit for much power, so with those things in mind, it's not that hard to lose games when you outhit the opponent. I can understand the argument about not hitting for power, but do you mean that they would win more games if they substitute some of their hits for more walks? i mean that the main way they get on base is via hits and they aren't getting on base much besides getting hits. it's not like they're getting 12 hits a game and also walking 6 times. if your team hits a bunch of singles and doesn't do much else on offense, you can easily lose games where you have more hits than your opponent.
  23. well they don't walk enough and don't hit for much power, so with those things in mind, it's not that hard to lose games when you outhit the opponent.
  24. he's a bad, old pitcher who shouldn't even be pitching for a major league team, let alone throwing important 8th innings. i guess that's proof that even the great tony larussa puts too much emphasis on stupid ERA.
