  1. Only ones that even look close to alike are Maggette and Xzibit, and that's because they are smiling the same. really? only one pair out of those entire three pages looks anywhere close to alike?
  2. Hendry's best move this year. So much for all of the wannabe GMs here who were begging for Adam Dunn. what about all the wannabe GMs who panned hendry for signing grabow to a deal worth nearly $4m per year?
  3. the century plus thing really should not factor into decision-making, and the bad contracts are already signed so there's no sense in doing anything with them other than just allowing them to expire.
  4. catchers tend to get hurt frequently, and have shorter careers, and as mentioned they take longer to develop because of the defensive/staff-handling demands. plus he's a dick and would probably end up pissing off too many of his pitchers as well as home plate umpires.
  5. because his fastball velocity was always inconsistent and he didn't maintain it well deep into games, and his secondary pitches were never very good. he was from the jose ceda/rafael dolis school of starting pitching.
  6. Maybe a little of both. They were a middling team for two decades and seemed happy to finish 3rd with a $30-$40m payroll. yeah they behaved like a mid-market franchise, which is embarrassing considering that philly is (i think) the #4 tv market in the u.s. of course it didn't help that the vet was a dump and had morons in the front office (lee thomas was just as bad as ed wade, if not worse). once they got a new stadium and committed to acting like a big-market team, plus brought in competent leadership, the winning soon followed.
  7. delbis arcila (18 years old) seems like a guy worth keeping an eye on. he hit his second and third HR's for DSL Cubs 2, has 10 XBH's in 16 games and showed a patient eye both last year and this year.
  8. i don't understand this. if you were to go back 5 or 10 years from now and rank current cub prospects by major league WAR (to evaluate which guys were most successful), there's a strong chance that at least one or two of the top 20 is currently pitching in relief in the minor leagues. Marmol and Marshall weren't relief prospects. If you choose to highly value peak/ceiling, there's nothing wrong with avoiding relief prospects. well yeah if you look at the cubs' roster you'd think that no minor league relievers turn out to be valuable. craig kimbrel was always a reliever and has already been worth 1.5 wins and jordan walden always profiled as a reliever, shifted there last year and has been worth 1.3 wins. i'd rather have a good relief prospect than a guy who 5% of the time will become a regular mlb player and 95% of the time will be a bust.
  9. yeah he doesn't belong at low A - probably didn't belong there at all.
  10. i don't understand this. if you were to go back 5 or 10 years from now and rank current cub prospects by major league WAR (to evaluate which guys were most successful), there's a strong chance that at least one or two of the top 20 is currently pitching in relief in the minor leagues.
  11. plus Lord knows the iowa pitching staff can't get anyone out; mineaswell see if a position player can do the job
  12. joe paterno - cheater
  13. bat speed and swing plane have a lot to do with power... muscle or weight really aren't the only factors.
  14. petition to change username to Not an Aramis Fan
  15. What does this mean? between kyle's weird "garcia" yesterday and now this one, i have to wonder if he's on a bender.
  16. chen kind of interesting because he's fast and seems to know that he should play a small-guy's game... shows very little power but pretty good contact skills, and draws a good number of walks. of course, those may evaporate as he gets toward the majors if he doesn't add at least a little bit of power. kyler burke has made his debut as a pitcher and (so far) has 0.2 ip with a walk.
  17. buried in the awesomeness of that cardinals' meltdown is the part where the brilliant tony larussa pulled trever miller (.203/.294//.257/.551 against LH batters in 2010) in favor of jason motte (who's definitely righthanded) to face ryan howard (.913 OPS versus RHP this year; .693 versus LHP). just a horrendous decision.
  18. madison bumgarner's line against the twins tonight: 0.1 ip, 9 h, 8 er, 0 bb, 1 k. =D>
  19. frank batista blew it for daytona, they lost. hunter ackerman looks ready to continue his terrible 2010 debut; he gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and 3 runs in the first inning of the AZL cubs' game. iowa's terrific pitching staff continues to do great work. casey coleman was typically mediocre (3 runs in 6 ip, though his whip was almost 2) but caridad sure brought the gas can in the 7th inning, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and 7 runs. jeff stevens then continued his journey toward unconditional release-ville by allowing 4 hits and 3 runs in 0.2 innings (so far, maybe they'll just leave him out there because really, who cares)
  20. they need another guy who should be in the AHL? ben eager has more than enough ability to play in the nhl.
  21. it's really not that easy. first you have to find a place for one of the most popular teams in baseball to play 81 games. if they move to cell or milwaukee they'll lose a significant amount of gate revenue because (a) they're not playing at wrigley, which is a huge draw, and (b) they will have to pay the sox/brewers to use their ballparks. that's assuming that the cubs can get the renovation done in about 18 months (which should be do-able, i would hope). as for building another ballpark in wrigleyville, i'm pretty sure there is a lot of stuff around there and not just a gigantic open lot waiting for the cubs to come along and build a ballpark on top of it.
  22. that's nice. his brother was way more valuable in 2009, is 2.5 wins better already this year, is 4 years younger and has seen his k rate (his biggest problem) drop from 26.6% in 2010 to 17.8% in 2011.
