  1. it's hard to tell if some of the big top 10 names have signed. has rendon signed yet? wouldn't mind a couple of those guys holding out and not signing, since we stink and will have a top 10 selection next year.
  2. if the cubs are giving vogelbach over a million more than slot, he's signing. baez doesn't really have a clear college option so i can't imagine he doesn't sign. that one worries me less because worst case scenario we just get an extra pick next year.
  3. Yeah, he's gonna be in the doghouse. So if Maples is signed, will it be for seven figures as well? the rumor was that maples had a $2m price tag, so it would be extremely shocking if he didn't sign for seven figures. especially considering that the cubs have been meeting or exceeding pretty much everyone's price tag.
  4. ricketts is going to be getting a LOT of mean text messages from bud selig.
  5. yeah i know he has always been a good guy (charitable off the field) and he was beloved in cleveland and well-liked in philly (don't know much about his time with the white sox or twins, but i assume it's the same). and umfan is right, this definitely flew under the radar. i knew he had a shot at 600 coming into this year but didn't realize he was so close. i'm sure there would have been more attention if he'd hit 599 tonight and then were sitting on that number for a couple of games, but still, his dad and family have been travelling with him for a while to be there when he hit #600, so there was always the chance he could hit 2 in a game.
  6. nice to see the standing ovation from the tigers' fans and his dad, wife and kids come out on the field to celebrate with his teammates at home plate. kind of fitting they came against the tigers since he's terrorized them for years by playing for three teams in the AL central (his line against the tigers coming into tonight was .292/.433/.630/1.064, and he now has 65 hr in 211 games against the tigers).
  7. he homered twice against detroit tonight, his 599th and 600th home runs of his career. he's the 8th player in mlb history to reach the 600 hr milestone. all of the other guys who are in the club and are hall-eligible are in the HOF. the guys who aren't HOF-eligible are sosa (probably will have a long wait), bonds (might have a long wait, which is dumb), griffey (probably will get in quickly because he hasn't been a widely-rumored steroid user) and a-rod (still active). does thome get in pretty quickly after he retires? i'd guess yes because he's perceived as a nice guy and hasn't been one of the rumored steroid users.
  8. the funniest part of that article is seeing what ray ratto looks like
  9. i remember watching some espn saturday night game from starkville, and they always did some shots from notable places around campus and town. the first thing they showed from starkville was the state prison.
  10. hopefully there is one where he has to be less fat. really it's up to him. if he's content with making $1.6m from playing baseball and letting himself go, then he's not going to be anything. hopefully he has enough sense to know that he can make way, way more money if he works hard on his fitness.
  11. schlecht made his debut and went 1-5 with 3 K's. marco hernandez was 2-5 with a home run.
  12. i really would not count on him leaving philly. they have a $165m payroll this year, and oswalt and blanton will be off their books by 2012 offseason. I agree the Phillies will make him too much of a priority for him to get away. I don't know how they will redo their offense if they sign him though. They have 60 million tied up to the starting rotation this year. If they sign Hamels to a 20 million a year deal, they'll have 65 million in the rotation for 3 pitchers they'd just structure it so that hamels has a lower salary in 2013-14 (assuming halladay's 2014 option is exercised) and then higher salaries from 2015 onward. as it is they'll be dropping close to $80m on four starters next year, so obviously they can handle it.
  13. i think mississippi state should've been the klansman, but nobody cares about ms state. why? Ole Miss is the one with the embarrassing racial history, not State. i guess i wasn't thinking so much about history but current situation... my impression is that ole miss is a better school and is attended by students with wealthier backgrounds, while ms state is in a backwater town and is a bad school attended by poorer students.

  15. hopefully there's a clause in his contract that nobody on nsbb is allowed to call him vogelbomb.
  16. oh good, now we're throwing apostrophes into the word "want"
  17. man the cubs are giving crazy money to everyone. again, rather have them blowing big money on amateur talent than the john grabows of the world, but i don't think anyone saw dunston as a late first round money type.
  18. He isn't OPS'ing close to 1.000 this year. meh, run environment is down this year and he's having a down year. he's "only" 10th in OPS+ this year after ranking 1st 4 times, 2nd 3 times and 3rd 1 time in the last 8 years. his BABIP is .257. i'm not going to start wringing my hands too much about it. to me, the most worrisome part about his game this year is that his walk rate is way lower than it was the past several years. i'm not sure if that's because he's pressing or what.

  20. yeah. look, a GM can feel good about himself if he goes out and gets a marlon byrd or mark derosa and they play above the level of their contracts, but you're really not going to contend for a title with a bunch of 2 and 3 win players at every position. you do need a few guys like that, but you also need a true star. if you look at every team that's likely to make the playoffs this year, only one (braves) isn't going to have a player worth around 6 wins or more, and the braves are winning because they have crazy pitching depth. we have money to spend, a gaping hole at 1b, no decent solution in the minors, and two of the best 1b in the game are free agents after this season. big-market teams shouldn't be going after a michael cuddyer to fill that spot because they're afraid that albert pujols won't be ops'ing near 1.000 when he's 38.
  21. there's no reason the cubs can't be that, provided that they commit to spending money on amateur talent (as well as signing good scouts to find that talent and good coaches to develop it once it's in the system).
  22. by numbers i assume you mean ERA and WHIP, and only this season? maholm pitches half his games in a pitcher's park; wilson pitches his home games in one of the best hitter's parks in baseball. maholm was bad last year (ERA over 5); wilson was good. maholm isn't bad but he's nothing more than a #3/4 at best. let's not pretend that you're going to get roughly equivalent production whether you sign him or wilson.
  23. since you're buddy-buddy with him maybe you could ask him how john gibbons is doing as manager of the pirates this year.
  24. boise had a good day if you ignore their pitching. chen had a monster game - 3-3 with a triple, home run, sac fly and walk, 5 RBI, 3 runs and 2 SB (along with a CS). golden was 2-4 with a home run and a pair of K's. devoss was 1-3 with 2 walks.
