  1. well hopefully the fact that he just toured the minor league affiliates, including the short season clubs, puts to bed the ridiculous idea that they don't care about winning. (or maybe he just didn't feel like going on another safari)
  2. trade him to the cubs, we'll take his bad attitude.
  3. crosby had to stop offseason workouts because of post-concussion. the pens say they're happy with how he's progressed and say this is the first setback in quite a while, but boy, this is bad news for them and the league as a whole.
  4. yeah that's probably why ricketts just spent like $15 million in the past year on amateur talent, so he could brag to his rich friends about it at cocktail parties.
  5. is this your new thing now? barge into a thread where everyone is ripping on someone for saying or doing something stupid and tacitly defend that person by accusing the board of groupthink? because i hate to tell you, (a) it's annoying and (b) we already have davearm to do that.
  6. where are you getting $10.5m from? the mark prior contract? that was not a bonus. the deal was $4m bonus and $10.5m overall contract value. gerrit cole's $8m bonus is a record for a minor league contract. i've never seen it reported that the cubs offered samardzija an 8 figure bonus. i think you're confusing overall contract value with bonus.
  7. The deal could have been a two sport deal without the need for a MLB deal. Regardless, they could have done a MLB deal from the start which is fairly common. The uncommon thing about the deal was a fifth rounder getting ten million. so you really think the cubs were trying to give him a $10m bonus straight up? i highly doubt that, considering that as far as i know, no team has given an amateur player an 8 figure bonus, and certainly not a 5th round draft pick.
  8. just using the perfect game bonuses, vogelbach's rumored $1.6m bonus would be 5th for that round (behind $5m josh bell, $3m austin hedges, $2m dan norris, $1.85m dillon howard). zych would be one of the more expensive 4th round picks, and obviously a lot of the late round bonus babies will be among the most expensive players in their rounds.
  9. meh, it's a little of both. go cheap on matt bush and get a guy who's a washout... go for the "tougher sign" in verlander and get a guy who will probably be worth $250 million during his career. i like that the cubs grabbed a bunch of top 10 round talents, but they gave first round money to three or four guys.
  10. 2 years is a little quick. the pirates spent over $17m on this draft; the nats may have spent more. teams are figuring out that amateur spending is the way to win, especially if you're a mid or small market club. you can see why selig is pushing for hard slots, because the spending has gone up quickly.
  11. apparently the nats got their top 4 picks done, which means they spent a lot of money. red sox are staying true to form and spending big dollars as well.
  12. Yeah, pretty shocking. not too shocking when you hear he got $5 million. that's top 5 pick money.
  13. so who are the two in the top 20 unsigned? dugas and lindgren?
  14. some of the first rounders are starting to trickle out.... looks like bradley, starling and mahtook got done.
  15. goodwin supposedly signed with nats for $3m
  16. the fax machine at mlb offices may explode at 11:59
  17. most of the first round is still supposedly unsigned.
  18. i have to say, this whole process has gotten a bit absurd. you had the draft two months ago and 23 of 32 first round picks are unsigned with an hour left.
  19. seems like the yankees are going over slot more than they used to.
  20. some guy rosario had a nice start for boise. cuneo hit a hr; devoss had a double and 3 walks but no steals (was picked off once). wilson contreras seems like he has a lot of errors. dsl cubs 2 scored 18 runs. candelario was 3-6 and a single short of the cycle. jeff baez was 2-4 with 2 walks. penalver 2-5 with a triple. xavier batista had a double and 2 hr. victor garcia pitched well and has solid numbers on the year. iowa leads 2-1. no brett jackson. lemahieu has homered and walked. struck: 6 ip, 5 h, 1 er, 3 bb, 3 k.
  21. my twitter feed is going to be blowing up for the next hour
