  1. if his ERA was just over two-tenths of a run then he definitely had the best pitching season of all time.
  2. was reading a bill simmons article that made a case for verlander as mvp this year, and it got me thinking - what is the best pitching year of all time? is it pedro martinez' 1999? he went 23-4 with a 2.07 era, pitching his home games in one of the better hitters' parks in the game, and played in the stronger league with the dominant yankees in his division. his FIP was an absurd 1.39, which was more than 3 runs below the league average. for the year, he was 80 runs better than average and 100 runs better than replacement. he was worth about 12 wins, according to fangraphs. i don't know if that is the best ever, but it is pretty [expletive] great.
  3. spending the money isn't the only thing that matters, they also have to identify the right talent and then develop it properly. the complete lack of patience that is rampant throughout the cubs' entire organization shows that something has been done wrong the last few years - either they're drafting the wrong players or not developing the players properly. or probably some of both.
  4. how many top of the rotation guys are also extreme sinkerballers? maddux definitely allowed more grounders, and brandon webb was an extreme ground ball guy, but i can think of a lot more of the derek lowe/chien ming wang/aaron cook types. the extreme ground ball guys who were also aces had plus/plus-plus command and also good K rates. but really, if wells turns into derek lowe or even aaron cook, that's just fine with me.
  5. that relief pitcher we got in the fukudome trade fuckin sucks.
  6. cerda won best defensive 3b in his league. i don't know how he is at 2b but i can't imagine that he's abysmal there if he's good at 3b.
  7. no, he has been terrible. his whip is over 1.8.
  8. that's pretty damn funny
  9. is that because he really liked hendry or because he assumed that hendry would just give him some moronic amount of money like he's done with some other players?
  10. If the cubs are "tight with spending" then like 25 other MLB teams are too.
  11. i'd take lots of benefits in the offseason if the only punishment was to be suspended for a game against [expletive] akron.
  12. I wonder how many FCS teams would beat UNLV. They look terrible. on the other hand, wisconsin (for one year) is not boring old run the ball 50 times a game and win despite a mediocre qb. Going to the Rose Bowl is not boring. For a team like Wisconsin, that's what matters. Not making Sportscenter with highlight pass plays. it's what they've done for several years. ohio st played the same way under tressel. i wasn't saying it's wrong to win that way, it's just not interesting to watch.

  14. 6 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 4 k in AA tonight, probably his last minor league start. he had 3 bb/29 k in 20 minor league innings. the control is a really good sign for him - a lot of guys struggle with command that first year off tjs.
  15. *Michael Brenly grounds into a force out, third baseman Juan Sanchez to second baseman Scooter Gennett. Matthew Szczur out at 2nd. then he came out. strong start by antigua: 6 ip, 4 h, 2 er, 1 bb, 8 k, 1 hr. he's been really good after a rough start to the year. he's only 21 and throws lefty; will be interesting to watch him next year (presumably with tennessee).
  16. iowa state inexplicably plays iowa tough even when the cyclones are terrible.
  17. Realistically I can't do this draft time so I'll drop out
  18. 56.7% coming into today's game.
  19. castro might strike out 100 times this year, which is a bit too much for a guy who doesn't hit for much power or draw many walks. he's been striking out almost once a game since the ASB.
  20. hoilman, golden and contreras have home runs for boise. baez is 0-3 with 2 K's and, you guessed it, an error. rosario has pitched well - 5 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 1 bb, 4 k. austin kirk was terrible and his overall season numbers are pretty uninspiring.
  21. he did: 7.0 ip, 6 h, 3 er, 2 bb, 7 k, 1 hr. nice to see those K's keep coming because last year his K-rate was pretty poor.
  22. He has a .574 ops for reasons that have nothing to do with what is being discussed in this thread.
  23. teixeira hasn't played outfield in 7 years. come on.
  24. that group only has 175 points to work with, don't see any way they don't get to 2000 unless hanley and morneau stay hurt and a couple of others get hurt. you'll likely be able to make it without keeping napoli, though. i already know that i'm losing a year of exemption on trout, kipnis, goldschmidt and rizzo, so now i'm left to hope that none of them reach 200 ABs and lose minor league exemption too.
  25. i also do not remember sam horn or calvin pickering doing much during their 30s.
