i'm not sure if the search is taking too long or nobody wants the job. -
again, you can use that logic and end up with a team full of min salary guys. the cubs can be lousy without being horrendous to the point of torpedoing part of their fan base.

i don't even care about the $200m or whatever. with the cubs dumping zambrano's money and having ARam's contract expire, they were never going to be able to spend that (especially with the new draft rules) unless they went out and signed a few high-priced free agents. there shouldn't be a requirement to spend a certain amount of money each year; that's a nice way to end up with dumbass contracts. if they love next year's free agent class or something, pocket the profits from this season and then go crazy next year. i'm not excited that the team is probably going to be lousy in 2012, but there are smart people running the organization and i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

an actual vision for the future and not taking on more bad contracts. let's be realistic, the cubs' core was lousy and the only way the cubs were going to be any good in 2012 was to make at least a couple of expensive free agent signings or trade the few good prospects we have for good major league players on other teams.

unfortunately what is also known is that three teams which seemed desperate for young-ish starting pitching (reds, nationals, arizona) just gave up nice prospect packages, and maybe the other teams out there on the market aren't as interested in giving up big-time prospects.

i dunno, i've found it pretty entertaining. often when there's a trade most people fall on the same side. this is one time where several posters with whom i usually agree are on the other side.

just because no team out there is willing to give up a king's ransom for him now doesn't mean that won't change. guys become injured and ineffective and good teams get desperate, especially for frontline starting pitching. obviously garza is an injury risk (because he's a pitcher), but if he throws like a solid #2 there will be a nice market for him this year.

i dunno, i'm sure some people expect zambrano could pitch better and increase his trade value during the first 3-4 months, other people were probably just big fans of him, and then many expected a better return if the cubs were eating that much salary (see: logan morrison talk). but it definitely sucks to see kaplan gloating after a victory in his "get rid of the brown guys" crusade.

one issue i had with that fangraphs piece is that zambrano has, up until last year, consistently outpitched his xFIP, to the point where you can't just write it off as a fluke. even with his ERA being a half run higher than his xFIP last year, his career ERA is still more than a half run higher than his xFIP.

the next time you find yourself typing the phrase "some decent prospects" or "a few prospects," try listing some names. proposals like "throw in a few prospects and get logan morrison back" are pointless.

bay was in his age 30 season, heading into his most expensive arbitration year and only under their control for another year. and explain who these nebulous "few prospects" are that would turn volstad into morrison.

Yea, I don't normally buy into chemistry arguments. Ever. But Zambrano is pretty much the definition of the exception to that belief. I'll ask the same question I asked about Milton Bradley. Who on the team last year struggled due to Zambrano's presence? that's a silly question. obviously nobody can quantify what impact a misbehaving player has on his teammates. are you suggesting that chemistry problems don't exist and that bad teammates don't ever have an effect on the performances of players around them?

a) don't know if volstad is all that's coming back. b) some people think volstad is likely to have a better year given his improved K and BB rates last year, and a HR rate that was quite high. plus he's only 25 so he should still be getting better. c) zambrano was mediocre last year, his line drive rate has increased for 5 years and his K rate dropped by almost 2 per 9 innings in 2012. d) we don't really know how zambrano was regarded in the locker room. his teammates may have been fed up with him to the point that removing him from a team that is likely to be lousy is preferable to having him around with the small hope that he pitching and behaves better.

Manny Ramirez was a hell of a lot better then than Z is. and the red sox gave up two prospects in the deal, and paid ramirez' entire salary the rest of that year. great comparison WSR.

if volstad's improving peripherals last year were a sign of him becoming a better pitcher, or if zambrano bashes a teammate in the head with a fungo bat, then yes it probably would be hard to get a chris volstad for him at the deadline.

Really weird to think that he's 2 weeks younger than Cashner. Volstad's HR rate is one thing that's downright bizarre to me. He's a pretty good ground ball guy who didn't give up many HRs in MiLB and played half his games in Pro Player, but he's had some crazy high and crazy low HR rates in his short MLB career. I don't know what to make of it. i'd guess underwhelming stuff plus not good enough command - when he misses high it's probably pretty easy to bash.

I had interest in him when he was a non tender candidate, but not for our 2nd best pitcher+ 15-16 million dollars. Maybe they're just trying to build an entire team out of 4-5 starters, 4th outfielders, and middle relievers. yeah that's probably exactly what theo is doing, he's decided to not do the things that won two world series in boston and instead build a team that will be the worst team in baseball every year.

Pretty much how I feel. i agree except for the last sentence. much more fun to ignore his several-year track record and call him a moron within two months of him starting with the cubs.
