  1. i'm on record as believing that selig has generally done a very good job as baseball commissioner - his greatest failings being the handling of the steroid scandal, and the ham-handed attempt to contract a pair of clubs (including the twins, who never should have been on the chopping block). but the game has grown significantly under his watch, both in the usa and globally, the owners are profiting, the players are profiting, and there hasn't been a work stoppage in almost 20 years. the owners should just give him the tim wakefield package and make him commish-for-life until he dies, chooses to retire or becomes too senile to do the job any more. he should be elected to the hall of fame at some point. that being said, he's an old man and hopefully they have a succession plan in place.
  2. yeah considering that people give bums like suppan and randy wolf almost $10m a year to eat innings, it's a bit shocking that maholm is only worth $5m/year on the open market. guessing that shoulder injury caused some concern and teams don't properly assess how the lousy pirates' defense affected his overall stats.
  3. that's a bargain. he could easily be worth more than $4.25m this year, and that's a reasonable option as well. as long as he stays healthy he should benefit the team and possibly have some trade value around the deadline or next offseason. excellent signing.
  4. did he have an AP vote? that could explain the one moron who voted lsu #1.
  5. aren't those three (turner/castellanos/smyly) their top 3 prospects? i feel like if you're making a deal where you give away your three best prospects, you should be getting something better than garza and barney. two of the three would be reasonable, with turner obviously #1.
  6. STOP SHOVING YOUR RELIGION IN MY FACE I HOPE HE FAILS MISERABLY this is embarrassing.
  7. fun fact, maholm was drafted two spots after former cub great ryan harvey.
  8. lol they're probably a bit annoyed with maholm for leaking it
  9. they can always hold off on filing the paperwork on the maholm signing until they decide what they're going to do about the 40-man, whether it be trading garza/baker/dewitt/whoever or removing a guy like maine or mateo.
  10. i guess the upside of bama winning the title is that there may be a collection of photos of inbred hillbillies with the MNC trophy, like there was with auburn last year. http://deadspin.com/5735160/when-auburn-fans-descend-on-walmart/gallery/1
  11. for what reason? proud of this awesome display between bama and lsu? this is a terrible game.
  12. hey remember that texas-usc championship game? this is just like that, except not compelling or exciting.
  13. this game fuckin sucks
  14. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2534/3995724812_81ea44e459_o.gif
  15. i'd be fine with it too, he could be our mole and sabotage them with bad play, a la mark derosa.
  16. i wasn't aware the jaguars had an offense. also, it's amazing how much some coordinators move around. i'd hate that nomadic life.
  17. pretty much all those guys are better than travis wood.
  18. I don't see any of the up and comers (Sixers, Knicks, Pacers) overtaking Miami and probably Chicago. But they should all fight with the Hawks and maybe the Celtics for the 3rd spot in the East (or possibly the Magic if Howard is not traded, but it would surprise me if they finished 3rd). After these years of dominance, the East is finally catching up to the West. sorry, i meant to say the atlantic division. they're not as good as miami and chicago, but maybe they could win the atlantic and a first round series? even that would be a huge accomplishment considering that they've been stuck in "barely miss the playoffs or make it as a low seed and get trampled" zone for years now. also, nikola vucevic is looking like a nice pick so far... 5.2 ppg and 4.4 rpg playing just under one quarter per game. jodie meeks sucks though... if they get serious about the playoffs they should upgrade at the 2-guard.
  19. http://www.johnny-web.com/walker.htm walker's career line away from coors was .281/.362/.494. obviously a very good player but to me it's not good enough for a corner outfielder during a big offensive era.
  20. I'm guessing GB stands for God Bless, but what is it squared? it's actually "God bless glenn beck"
  21. Do you promise to learn his name if we actually do sign him?
  22. could the sixers win the east? they seem to be a bit less mediocre than pretty much every other year since allen iverson was good.
  23. considering that theo has been paying jason varitek to be the team mascot for the last 3 years, i'd say he understands sentiment.
  24. it's really less than a year and a half difference because callaspo has an april birthday and torreyes' birthday is in september. and callaspo jumped to AA in his age 20 season, so torreyes is likely to end up on about the same timetable. i like torreyes quite a bit - even though he's quite young, his hit tool is borderline elite, and guys like that tend to find a home in the majors, even if it's just as a utility guy like keppinger or a decent starter like callaspo. plus they're the same height and they're both venezuelan; everyone prefers to compare brown guys to brown guys and white guys to white guys.
