  1. that's not even half of the problem. their entire lineup is packed with players who are either well past their primes, or are not good at baseball. their best pitchers are generally overpaid and also declining. their minor league system is pretty much bereft of impact talent. so great, they get some bad contracts off the books, then what happens? how do you get impact talent into your organization? three ways: from within - which isn't going to happen in the near future for the phillies, since their prospects are lousy. via trade, which also is going to be very difficult to do unless they eat a lot of money on contracts like hamels and lee to "buy" prospects from other clubs. nobody is giving up impact young players for ryan howard or jimmy rollins. and the third way is signing free agents, and giving big contracts to already-declining players is a big reason why the phillies are a mess now. all of this becomes even more difficult when you realize that their $170m payrolls are going to be a thing of the past until they start drawing well, which isn't going to happen until they start winning again, and that will be a few years down the road.
  2. isn't marcos mateo like 35 years old now
  3. i wouldn't really judge them based on their bonuses. they're 15 or 16 year old kids when they're being scouted and signed. that's a very inexact science; some guys (like carlos henry) are going to look okay in workouts and then be horribad baseball players. other ones won't look like they have amazing tools, but then end up being very good (castro, alcantara are recent examples).
  4. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/30/hey-rube-phillies-pay-dearly-for-amaros-misguided-loyalty/related/ conclusions: -very long term contracts for players in their late 20s are a very, very bad idea. -ruben amaro is a disastrously bad general manager.
  5. clearly you haven't visited desipio then.
  6. People keep talking about his stuff but all I ever see is line shots all over the park. He's good enough to be an MLB pitcher, I guess, but I don't see anything in his stuff I like more than any other pitcher in the rotation. he has the highest LD% against of any qualified pitcher in baseball this year. :x
  7. That's worse than the DSL SS from 5 years ago or so that seemed like he K'd half the time and made 2 errors a game. carlos henry! i loved that guy. sub .500 OPS and 42 errors in his only season. best prospect ever.
  8. scott frazier's line for the season: 1.1 innings, 4 hits, 20 runs, 17 walks, 1 k, 4 hbp, 7 wild pitches. 72.4% of the batters he has faced have reached base via walking of getting hit by pitch.
  9. i am going to make yohan matos (catcher on DSL cubs) my favorite random prospect who nobody else cares about. reported $280k bonus. hitting .314/.414/.540/.954 with 23 bb/31 k as a 17 year old catcher. .954 OPS is 5th in the DSL among qualified hitters.
  10. striking out 54.6% of batters faced? yeah that's not bad.
  11. gleyber torres is 3-3 with a triple and a walk. now 7-7 with a double, triple and 3 walks in his last 10 plate appearances. guess the slump is busted.
  12. cj edwards according to the milb box score (for the azl cubs): 3.2 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 3 bb, 6 k.
  13. someone hit a home run, these singles and doubles are boring.
  14. how soon until WSR sees charles cutler's batting average at tennessee and starts wondering about whether he could be a contributor to the big league club?
  15. wada makes me think of world anti-doping association.
  16. when you look at the AZL numbers, the average batting line is something like .255/.333/.365/.698. so jimenez (.267/.313/.440/.753) and torres (.261/.368/.352/.720) are more than holding their own as 17 year olds. good to see. i wonder if either one will get a shot at starting with kane county next season?
  17. paniagua is 24? better get a move on, buddy.
  18. well, his career BABIP coming into this season was around .350, so he's more than 50 points below his career BABIP. (line drive rate is way down this year)
  19. For future use: http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--AhRtvCGW--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_320/cvqa5o0lnqinkbqqwszn.gif i really want this to happen in a modern major league game, just to see some d-bag like jay mariotti or skip bayless cry and [expletive] their pants on national tv.
  20. considering that DH is traditionally one of the highest-paid positions in baseball and the cubs are owned by #ptr, that may not be a great idea for the cubs, long-term.
  21. from the BP monday ten pack (and it's probably good that these are guys we hear less about, rather than the players like bryant/soler/baez who we already know enough about):
  22. http://images.ridemonkey.com/index.php?size=full&src=http%3A%2F%2Fimages2.fanpop.com%2Fimages%2Fphotos%2F7900000%2F2x06-Afternoon-Delight-Animated-gif-Michael-What-No-no-no-no-arrested-development-7915781-300-167.gif
  23. soler is going to magically shoot up into a lot of experts' top 20 prospects in the offseason.
  24. torres ended up 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, 2 walks and a stolen base. boosted his batting average by 35 points and his obp up to .368.
