  1. a real banner day for the entire cubs organization
  2. Don't even start thinking about it. Either the Mets or the Braves are gonna get it. I haven't given up on the Phillies... their offense is right there with the Mets as the best in the league, and the starting staff is pretty deep. They need to fire Charlie Manuel to have a shot at keeping up with the Braves and Mets, though.
  3. Cust and Dan Johnson were named co-players of the week in the AL for last week
  4. yeah i'm not following along with that... he's QUAID not QUAH-dee
  5. If Cedeno gets back on track and if Patterson continues to develop and if Theriot shows he can handle regular duty all year then I think you can discuss trading DeRosa. But that's not happening right now. perhaps it's not happening right now but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be. i think that jones, blanco, izturis, derosa, miller and eyre should all be gone by the all star break. So the Cubs are just going to eat at least $10M in salary? Because aside from Jones and DeRosa, nobody wants those guys.
  6. He's likely to get better, the others are not likely. Some players don't follow the perfect career curve, believe it or not. way to take the high road.
  7. Koyie Hill isn't that much of a hitter... I can't imagine them going with a platoon of those two guys, unless they want not much offense out of the catcher. Soto could probably be good backup or a marginal starter... probably hitting around the level of Damian Miller at his peak. They won't be able to trade Blanco unless they eat a good portion of his ridiculous contract.
  8. Oh man, imagine if the A's built around Kurt Suzuki at catcher, Dan Johnson at 1B, Swisher in CF and Jack Cust at DH? Walks bonanza, baby.
  9. how'd the astros get off the hook for this?
  10. Think Billy Beane is wondering why the hell he gave Mike Piazza $8.5M last offseason? That contract seemed like a bad idea to me at the time; the fact that Jack Cust can probably outhit Piazza makes it seem even worse now.
  11. this is elementary. Brett Myers is one of the best pitchers on the team. Do you want one of your best pitchers throwing 75 innings or 200 innings? If it's Eric Gagne - 75 innings because he's proven that he's better and stays healthier in that role. If it's Brett Myers, 200 innings because he can be just as good starting as he can be relieving.
  12. bump for jack's 6th hr of the year today... down 8-7 with 2 outs in the 9th, gave the a's the 10-7 victory
  13. To do what? Start ahead of DeRosa or Theriot? And this EPatt stat is ugly: 24 K:8 BB. Sorry, all the other people on here are rubbing off on me. I posted that without even thinking. No, you're right... he should be called up  But in all seriousness, he'll likely increase his walk rate, which right now is 9 BB in about 130 PA. But, his rate has been higher in previous season, and I'd expect it to increase. He's probably never going to have a great K/BB, but something around or slightly less than 2:1 can be expected. In (my) perfect world, he'll continue to improve this year at AAA and show that he deserves a spot on next year's club... then DeRosa can be a super-sub or a platoon partner against LHP next year while Patterson plays most of the time against RHP.
  14. Yeah, Iowa continues to rake... it's 13-4 with the Cobs having scored 2, 4, 1, 3 and 3 in the first five innings. Patterson 2-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI (BA .339) Pie 2-4, 3B, 1 R, 2 RBI (BA .463) Fontenot 3-4, 2B, 3 R, 1 RBI (BA .366) Hoffpauir 3-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI (BA .301) K. Hill 1-3, BB, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI (BA .321) All in all, 11-19 with 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 10 R and 11 RBI from the top 5 of the lineup. Good stuff!
  15. I know they're not going to win the World Series. yeah well with the cubs, you know that every year.
  16. I know, but I just saw it for the first time, and I'm guessing that it's new for almost everyone here too.
  17. RF. He couldn't be any worse than Murton out there. Cause, see. Matt Murton dropped that fly ball. and then threw a ball to nobody in particular today. He certainly doesn't look like a good fielder in RF.
  18. good thing AAA pitchers were busy playing in baseball games and not watching major league pitchers show how to get felix out
  19. Yup. Even more bizarre is that the A's had Cust under their control in 2005, when Scott Hatteberg and his 79 OPS+ at DH for most of the year. Why didn't they use him at DH when Hatteberg was struggling so badly? I have no idea. With Piazza out for quite some time, I hope that he gets regular playing time for at least a month or two. If you get to the all-star break and his bat has been anemic, maybe then it's time to stick a fork in him. But it really seems like he has been written off in the past without really getting a shot to prove what he can do against big league pitchers.
  20. I understand why SD/Colorado would pass on him, given that he is, but nearly all accounts, a butcher in the field. But given that AL teams have been starting guys like Jay Gibbons, Mike Sweeney, Shea Hillenbrand, Mike Redmond and Jose Vidro -- many of whom are overpaid in addition to being unproductive -- how is it that no team thought to give a chance to a guy with a career .429 OBP and 943 OPS in the minors? He had only about 170 major league PAs, for God's sakes!
  21. A hero to the OBP community everywhere, Jack Cust, has found his way into an organization that may well give him a legitimate shot in the bigs. Admittedly, he is a butcher in the field, but in Oakland he can DH while Piazza is hurt. He had the stigma of being a flop in the majors, even though he was only bad for 65 ABs with Colorado in 2002 (169/295/246/541) and then was pretty good for Baltimore in 2003 (260/357/521/878), then was banished to the minors for the past three years. So far this year he has a line of 318/444/1000/1444, with 5 HR in 22 AB. Obviously he won't keep this up, but given his AAA line of 293/467/549/1016 (143 walks!) last year and a career minor league line of 285/429/514/943, would it really be a surprise for him to be a better hitter than Piazza at this stage of their careers? I'm hoping that he continues to rake and get on base while Piazza is out... I always thought he deserved more than the halfhearted chances he's gotten in the bigs.
