  1. tennessee rained out. iowa start has been pushed to 8:15 central due to a rain delay. should be fine to start then, though.
  2. history does bear out that power pitching tends to win in the playoffs. (as do teams that have a strong bullpen)
  3. It would be funnier if Lake or somebody was wearing jorts
  4. i was watching football.
  5. [expletive], i mixed him up in my head with someone else. i guess that makes it a slightly less terrible decision.
  6. the mariners (facing jose quintana) went walk, reached on error, 3 run homer, single, single in the 5th inning against the white sox to take a 3-1 lead. so 5 straight runners on base, heart of the lineup coming up to the plate. lloyd mcclendon had dustin ackley (#2 hitter) lay down a bunt. ackley is a lefthanded batter, quintana is a righthanded pitcher, quintana has started to struggle, and ackley has a .367/.383/.620/1.003 line since the all-star break. mcclendon was asked after the game why he had ackley bunt, and he said it was because ackley was 1-for-7 career against quintana. ](*,)
  7. Jackson isn't going anywhere unless there's about $25 million accompanying him. That doesn't make a lot of sense. The MO of the front office has been to grab pitchers who are undervalued due to anomalously high ERAs due to bad luck on balls in play, bad luck with runners on base, etc. I don't see why they'd just give Jaxon away to pitch two free years for another club.
  8. It's pretty widely accepted that Soler can opt into arbitration once he's eligible. He'll only get paid at the level of his ML contract if he sucks. Really? Well that sucks. Not that he won't represent a huge bargain if he ends up good, but they don't even get to pay him dirt like most minor leaguers and pre-arby major leaguers make.
  9. yeah, it's an awful system and hopefully major league baseball addresses it in the next CBA. it makes for bad headlines when teams are holding down prospects like wil myers, desmond jennings, george springer, gregory polanco, kris bryant, etc, just to set their arbitration clocks back by a season. and not just the bad headlines; mlb should want exciting young players to be up playing in front of big crowds when they're ready for the top level.
  10. so just trying to make sense of soler, if he gets called up before next april then he becomes a free agent after his 2020 season (when he will still be making $4m), but if they call him up after next april, then they still control him for 2021? i guess an extra year of team control is nice, but it's the last arbitration year, which tends to be close to what the guy would make in free agency. tim lincecum was offered $17m from the giants in arbitration a couple of years ago, and asked for $21.5m. they ended up settling on a 2 year deal worth $40.5m. the biggest benefit is probably not getting a cheap year from soler - because if he ends up being a monster, he'll make a truckload of money that last arbitration year - but rather than you get an extra year in his prime before he goes onto the open market and is looking for a long-term deal. i guess i'm not sure that it's worth worrying about at this point.... IMO the benefit (giving him an extra two months to see major league pitching) outweighs the downside of getting to pay him $30m in 2021. that's assuming that the cubs are planning to contend for a playoff spot next year.
  11. lester arrieta hendricks turner or straily one of jaxon/wood with the other one traded. i like wada; wonder if they will be able to keep him on as a depth starter/long reliever.
  12. rivero has 31 strikeouts in 20.2 innings at iowa, and 85 in 55.1 innings overall this season. plus an ERA under 1.00 at iowa. i think he is ready.
  13. i'm definitely looking forward to seeing soler and armando rivero come up. on the almora injury, in the box scores there isn't any record of him having been removed from either game?
  14. he hasn't had a consistently higher fWAR than Hamels. if TT wants to start being intellectually honest he can admit that Hamels has more fWAR than Lester since 2011 and considerably more bWAR. i guess i'm looking more at 2008-2010 and then the last year and a half.
  15. i am guessing it was some combination of being hampered by injuries, rust from not playing a lot of competitive baseball due to those injuries and also the limbo when he was waiting to be cleared as a free agent, and then adjusting to living and playing in the US after playing competitively at a high level in cuba.
  16. i don't really understand why lester has a consistently better fWAR than hamels when his FIP has been a little worse. maybe the higher run environment from pitching in the AL east?
  17. 2 walks for soler now. hopefully they will call him up pretty soon, maybe it will distract the meatballs when they start getting angry at baez for striking out too much.
  18. alcantara successfully executes a sac bunt... cubs' win probability drops by 5 points.
  19. renteria should just troll everybody and give javy the day off.
  20. how does he not break his ankle doing that [expletive]
  21. this is all pretty exciting. not just how cub fans and people on this board are energized, but players on the big league club all seem pretty excited that the prospects that management has been talking about for years are starting to arrive. plus the young guys keep talking about coming through the system together and building something special with the (major league) cubs.
  22. yeah, that was a really hard pitch to hit for a home run. i expect him to hit a lot of home runs off mistake pitches, but jeez, if he's able to go opposite field on pitches on the outside corner at the knees... jeez, look out.
  23. bryant's obp the last 10 games is like .560. which isn't actually that far from his season obp.
  24. azl cubs lost their first game 5-3. soler went 1-2 with a strikeout.
  25. yeah, i don't see him giving the cubs any sort of team-friendly deal to buy himself some long-term security. just keep him down next april and bring him up once you've got the extra year. valbuena can hold down the fort until then.
