  1. if bud selig has been helping the brewers win since he became commish, it sure doesn't show
  2. hooray for arbitrary moderating
  3. I don't know what you expect. Should I have been bumping the thread every time he went 0-4 with three K's? I was a Jack Cust fan all along; this shouldn't be a surprise given my rants on this site about plate discipline and the Cubs' lack of it. You can compare him to Jason Dubois all you want, but their minor league K/BB ratios are wildly different, and PECOTA suggests a much more successful big league player in Cust. okay, then is it more okay to use the small sample size when you know that his performance in 2004 and 2005 was affected by significant problems in his wrists caused by carpal tunnel syndrome? Or when you know that he had surgery to correct the problem in the offseason of 2005, after which point he promptly returned to destroying minor league pitching?
  4. yes, that is sad indeed Pffft....who doesn't know who Hannah Montana is? She the daughter of one of the greatest musicians ever. I hear Mel Hall is a loyal viewer of Hannah Montana.
  5. as long as I get Jason Dubois's AAA career for dessert. not even close to being a good comparison I know, Cust took 6 years in AAA before he dominated it like Dubois did in his first year. look, Cust has had a great minor league career and an incredible start to this year. I have no idea why he was never given a better shot (other than spending most of his career in NL systems and lacking the abilities to catch and throw the ball). all I am saying is it's lame to declare him the second coming, then the thread making such declarations comes to an abrupt end when he goes into a month long skid, only to be revived when he has a bit of a hot streak. not only that, but using a tiny sample size to declare the month long skid an aberration, especially when as recently as 2004 around the age when a player should be entering his prime, he had a whopping 791 OPS at AAA, followed by a year of 840 OPS. walk rate, fantastic. great year last year at AAA, absolutely. enough evidence to declare him out of his slump and a full year 1.000 OPS player, hardly. yeah, because clearly in making this thread i was declaring him the next albert pujols

  7. You do realize the Rockies have a better record then the Cubs. Yes. I stand by what I said. This is a team we should take 2 out of 3 from, if not sweep. yes, the cubs should do that if they're a good team, which they're not.
  8. hilarious. if that was a slump, then there's a chance Jacque breaks out of it any day. Cust goes 7/52, 2 2B, 8/24 bb/k ratio for a month and noone talks about him. he lights up the NLs worst pitching staff, then gets a couple dingers over the following week, and he's back to hero status. Cubs definitely would have farmed him out considering he proved today he's incapable of fielding and throwing the baseball and the Cubs play in the National League. .412 OBP and 1.002 OBP, you're right, he sucks.
  9. actually this doesn't make sense at all. They already have four healthy starters, Capuano will be back soon, and Gallardo has pitched well. They don't really need another starter.
  10. yes, that is sad indeed
  11. baseball prospectus playoff probabilities suggest around 25% chance. That's probably right.
  12. right. Just because the Rockies usually stink doesn't mean that they stink now. They've got Helton, Hawpe, Tulo (who's raked the past month), Holliday and Atkins on offense, and Cook, Francis and Hirsh are fairly solid starters. Plus their bullpen has been performing well this year. Their offensive numbers are very poor again fly ball pitchers, but good against others. Fly ball pitchers they have a .667 OPS (78 OPS+), but against neutral pitchers they have a .817 OPS (119 OPS+) and a .789 OPS (112 OPS+) against ground ball pitchers. That doesn't bode well for Marquis, but it's good for Lilly.
  13. I don't know if the Red Sox will give up Buchholz... he might be ready next year anyway. Bowden could probably be gotten, as could Ellsbury, though given the problems the Sox have had with Drew and Crisp, they probably would like to keep Ellsbury. Lowrie's a guy I'd be happy to see the Cubs go after, maybe in a prospect-for-prospect swap. But that's not likely. In any case, if the White Sox pry a pitcher and a position player from those names above, I'll be impressed.
  14. in the end it didn't even matter. The Cubs got just one run that inning, and the White Sox got zero in the game.
  15. What has Lilly done wrong? Ranks 2nd in WHIP, 10th in K's. 3.90 ERA... Tough crowd around here. He's done nothing wrong, but neither have Hill or Marshall. They all are esseintially the same pitcher. So if I'm going to trade one, I'd rather trade the expensive one. well yeah, except the point Hoops was making is that the Cubs would get something good in return for Hill or Marshall. They wouldn't get much for Lilly unless they also threw in a good chunk of his salary the next 3+ years.
  16. Pujols debuted in April 2001, Rolen was acquired in July of 2002. Jocketty engineered the 1996 and 2000 division titles pre-pujols. No wild cards and no third title. Yeah that was dumb of me... I kept looking under 1B for Pujols, so I didn't realize that he debuted as a Cardinal until like 2 or 3 years too late. Anyway, overall point stands, just was poorly made.
  17. boise's losing again... they've been really disappointing so far
  18. Francis is 6-2 with a 1.00 WHIP and 2.14 ERA in his last 10 starts. Marquis isn't good. Cubs are boned.
  19. he's up to .258/.350/.475. where as his may was an awful .205/.316/.361, he's at .312/.391/.636 in june. he's managed to increase his walk rate each of the last three years to a respectable 12.1% this year, while decreasing his K rate by 7.3%. i'm not sayin', i'm just sayin'. i'm not saying he sucks, i'm just saying i wouldn't trade hill for him. i'd trade zambrano for him... not hill though. Gammons wrote an article today talking about how critical it is to produce good young pitchers - like the Tigers have with Verlander, Bonderman and Miller - because if you don't, then you've got to shell out the big bucks for mid-level talent like Ted Lilly. There's no reason to trade away a very good young pitcher for a position prospect, unless you're getting the next Pujols or Cabrera.
  20. wow, i just realized what a horrendous year mark reed is having. Not that I had high hopes for him anyway, but jeez. I think some people on this board could put up a .428 OPS for Daytona.
  21. jeez the brewers play the astros and then the cubs next? are they ever going to play a real team?
  22. good thing wilken liked samardzija, or i'd be worried about him
  23. well crap on a crutch, the royals actually won.
  24. what piece of trash are the royals gonna roll out there to try to close it?
  25. ahahaha line out to fielder... here comes the K or GIDP.
