  1. younger and with two fewer years of team control (the ones in which he didn't get paid anything). sure you give up a significant amount of value for harper, but any GM who would consider dealing soler, bryant and russell for harper should be shot in the face.
  2. we are smart, pitchers bat 8th And hopefully don't bat our worst hitter 1st alcantara is hitting 8th.
  3. yes
  4. Cubs luck they would trade Bryant, Russell, and Soler for him and this would happen opening night at Wrigley.. if the cubs do anything as dumb as making that deal, they deserve for bad things to happen.
  5. wow bigger than 34 year old platoon outfielder jonny gomes, who posted a .657 ops last season? this must be a blockbuster.

  7. well, that's pretty obvious. castillo's situation is a bit weird because he really hasn't been bad enough to just be completely relegated to a backup/platoon role, yet he's obviously not going to be the starter going forward with the cubs. while the best thing for the club on paper may be a straight platoon, i guess there's the whole thing about managing personalities, and if castillo is going to be grumpy because he could/should starting for a second-division team, then you probably just have to deal him away. but TT does raise a very good point about montero playing too many innings the past few years, and it would be really nice if he could stay somewhat fresh and healthy with his backup sharing about a third of the playing time. i'm not sure if ross is the guy to do that - he was actually quite a nice player at one point, but he's gone downhill pretty quickly. maybe a BABIP correction is due this year, though.
  8. i don't want jonny gomes unless it is to be crowd control in the bleachers (taking over for roast)
  9. i'm not totally convinced they wouldn't have tried to bring in shields on a shorter deal, given his background with maddon. i'm also not really sure where they're going to add. unless hendricks isn't considered part of the rotation, they've got one rotation slot left, and about 30 arms that could conceivably fill it. i don't see the need to get into a mini bidding war for someone like mccarthy when one of the internal candidates is likely to fill the role reasonably well. the only other place i can see them upgrading is in LF, but again, i'm not sure that you want to put a big contract in that spot given that bryant may end up moving there to allow russell or castro to take over at 3B. maybe they let wesley wright go because they're planning to bring in a lefthanded reliever? or do they hope that wada fills that role?
  10. also, WSR taking a flier on every player who was a top 100 prospect at some stage of his career. WSR also falling in love with every 29 year old hitter who puts up a hot month in iowa.
  11. soo...... once bryant comes up, we can look forward to something like this? 7 coghlin/ruggiano 6 castro 3 rizzo 9 soler 5 bryant 2 montero/castillo 4 baez 8 alcantara 1 whoever is pitching bench: la stella, ruggiano/coghlin, castillo/montero, valbuena, sweeney sp lester sp arrieta sp hammel sp hendricks sp wood? rp: rondon, strop, ramirez, turner, doubront, wada, some other lefty?
  12. Do we still have to pretend like those last 3 are worth anybody's time now that we have Lester? given how horrendous jaxon has been, i don't think he's worth anybody's time either. they're clearly treating 2015 as "hey let's go for it," and having a guy with a 5+ ERA doesn't really mesh with that. i think it's lester, arrieta, hammel, probably hendricks as long as he isn't horrific in spring training, then a royal rumble for the 5th spot with wada, turner, straily and maybe wood having an honest chance at it, assuming that wood is still around. i suspect they'll do a salary dump with jaxon for some marginal prospect, and i don't see doubront as having much of a chance - see him more as a bullpen arm.
  13. i'm not really sure it's less money given the difference in state income tax rates, but whatever. cool.

  15. but you can't count out the red sox, giants and dodgers, because he hasn't actually made up his mind yet!
  16. maybe they're still getting caught up on the pinch-framing thing too. castillo wasn't that bad in 2012, and pitch framing metrics i don't think were widely used a couple of years ago.
  17. does that mean we have to sign david ross until he's 45 years old?
  18. i'm not really sure how much "pursuing" you have to do with the target is a 38 year old backup catcher who hit .184 last year.
  19. some detail on the "two single-A players" would be nice, although i have a hard time believing they're all that significant if the cubs are taking on his whole salary.
  20. ricketts is hitting as many payday loan companies as possible in the next 24 hours.
