The Cubs have to make a choice, either sign Giles or sign Furcal. If we sign both that would leave us no money to spend on the rest of the team. The two of them would cost about 20 mil a year. When you add them to Lee and Ramirez we will have 4 guys making 40 mil. Then when you take into account all the other players were already have signed (Rusch, Nefi, Dempster, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Prior, Walker, Barrett, Williamson) the total for 14 players will be just under 90 mil. We still would have a lot of holes to fill and our budget will probably be 100 mil. Everything acquisition in baseball has to do with who is more valuable to this Cubs team with the money they'd be asking for. The answer, IMO, is Giles, seeing as we have no RF and we already have two in house options to play short and bat eighth in Nefi and Cedeno. A middle infield of Walker and Cedeno sounds pretty darn good to me. A good plan for this offseason would be to: 1) Sign Giles 2) Sign Lofton 3) Sign Dotel to set up Dempster 4) Sign or trade for a bat for the Bench. ie: Mark Sweeney or Chad Tracy A bullpen with Dempster, Williamson, and Dotel as your three horses is pretty good. Then all we got to do is fill in the rest of the pen with the guys we already have. Ohman, Wuertz, Novoa, Hill, Williams. The Bench is pretty simple also. Perez, Blanco, Hairston, Greenberg, Sweeney or Tracy, and Macias (only if he is the last option in to come off the bench though) If Tracy is on the team, he better be starting. Not on the bench.
