None. He talked only about 2B and 3B. He says Ryan Theriot is the Cubs everyday SS, and that Theriot will be fine. DeRosa loves the kid - "Ryan brings an energy that is great for our club."

Waddle and Silvy "grilling" him on how he feels about the Cubs potentially acquiring Roberts and Fukudome and turning him into a supersub. You can tell he's not happy about it (he's stressing about it), but he's being a team guy and will do what he's asked to do. He'd rather play infield over RF. He acknowledges Roberts would make the Cubs a better team with his speed, OBP ("the guy's a 2 time all star") and clubhouse presence. He knows Roberts off the field and likes him very much. So, he's "torn." He doesn't believe he'll get quality playing time with Aramis, Roberts and Fukudome starting though he feels he's earned the right to be an everyday player. Waddle and Silvy's take: "If those moves are made, the only scenarios where DeRosa will get to play full time is if someone's injured, or if the Cubs deal Pie and put Fukudome in CF." DeRosa agreed to a certain extent on that assessment. He loves being a Cub. It's better than anything he experienced in Atlanta or Texas. He (just like all the fans) is waiting to see how it all plays out in the next few weeks. Hoops

It was his opinion of what he would do if he was GM. Based on everything he knows, the Cubs are not interested in acquiring Bedard. He says Hendry is serious when he says Rich Hill is not going to be traded. He believes Hendry would trade Pie in the right scenario if Fukudome was signed.

On the hot stove baseball show this morning on ESPN radio AM 1000, Bruce Levine said on a couple of occasions that he believes the Cubs actual payroll for 2008 will be close to $125M, but he sees no reason why the club couldn't push it to $135M. The only thing holding them back is themselves. He reiterated that he believes the team will stick to $125M. It was said in the context of discussing a trade with Baltimore for Brian Roberts. Levine thinks the Cubs should trade for Roberts and Erik Bedard plus add Kosuke Fukudome, which would necessitate a $135M payroll. In his trade scenario for both Roberts and Bedard, Levine believes Andy MacPhail would be satisfied with Rich Hill, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno and Donald Veal. Hoops

The problem is that Prior, injuries and everything, could get a better deal than what the one-year team option would be even if he sat out the entire year and didn't pitch once. Some team out there would be willing to pay for another year of rehab with a team option, which guarantees him a few mil more and gets him the hell out of chicago... which seems to be his priority. And that is the point. Bruce Levine reiterated this very point on ESPN AM 1000's hot stove baseball show this morning: Mark Prior wants nothing to do with the Cubs anymore. He and his agent will not let the Cubs buy out his first year of free agency with a team option, mutual option or vesting option. It has very little to do with money. It has everything to do with Prior's wanting out of the organization. The Cubs really only have 2 choices left: - Pay him $2.8M, and assuming he's pitching by mid-June, hope to get a half dozen good starts out of him, so he can be traded on July 31 for something more than a bag of balls. - Non-tender him today and save the $2.8M for something else. -

to the Giants for starting pitching. My brother called from NYC and this rumor is making its way around NYC sports radio. No word on whether the Giants would have to deal Cain, Lowry or Lincecum to make a deal work. Talks are in progress, but it's not a done deal. The station my brother was listening to had a source inside the Yankees that said Matsui would be willing to waive his no trade clause for the right deal.

If we don't include Hill in the deal, I wonder if MacPhail would agree to take a Gallagher/Patterson type combo, but then insist that the Cubs take back a bad salary (i.e. Jay Payton's $5M in 2008) in addition to Roberts. That's what I'd do if I'm MacPhail.

If this rumor is true, and the teams indeed are working on a deal, it probably does dispel the rumor that the only thing MacPhail and Hendry were concentrating on during their lunch meeting yesterday was lunch.

Per my last estimate the Cubs have spent $106M on 21 players and have $14M left to spend assuming a budget of $120M. Roberts makes $6.3M in 2008 (and $8M in 2009). If the Cubs get him, they would only have $7.7M left to spend - that certainly won't be enough for Fukudome, who I heard might be looking at perhaps 3 years and $39M ($13M per year). So, in order to get Fukudome and Roberts, (I'm assuming Baltimore will not be picking up any cash on Roberts), one of two things need to occur: (1) Budget increased to $125M (2) Cubs shed $5.3M someplace else (dump Dempster or Marquis) Now, it's getting interesting. Can we change the title of the subject? It's un-American not to be ambitious, strive for the best (whether it be quality, money, etc...) and shoot for the moon. If David Eckstein thinks he's worth 4 years and $24M in the current landscape, why shouldn't he ask for $36M and see what happens? As with most things in the end, he'll get what the market can bear. The smoking crack comment is inappropriate here IMHO.

But it seems like he goes through a 5 year cycle where he over-funds one of his teams (Red Wings) at the expense of his other team (Tigers) and his key other business (Little Ceasar's), and vice versa. Sounds like the Tigers have favored status currently.
