  1. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9118858 "Washington Nationals Jose Vidro said he doesn't intend to give up second base to please new arrival Alfonso Soriano." "Soriano "is a tremendous plus for the team. But I'm a bit confused about what can happen if he doesn't want to play left field," Vidro told the local daily, El Nuevo Dia for Tuesday's editions." If Jose is indeed healthy, someone is going to have to give in... or get dealt!
  2. I'm hearing the rumor from 3 weeks ago again that the D-Backs are pushing the Cubs hard on a Luis Gonzalez and cash for Corey Patterson deal. It seems with the Glaus for Hudson and Batista trade done, the D-Backs are going to move Tracy to 3B, Counsell to SS and Green to RF with Tony Clark at 1B, and they are hoping to move Conor Jackson to LF if someone would take Luis in return for a CF. I've heard that if the Prior-Tejada deal goes nowhere, Hendry will consider trading Corey for Luis unless the Mets pull off a Manny Ramirez deal in which case Hendry will again focus on Cliff Floyd. Hendry is rumored to be working the phones hard to get a big bat for LF, SS or 2B. Hoops
  3. Your comments are all fair. I will adjust my sreadsheet accordingly.
  4. Good question. Who does San Diego have playing 2B now that Loretta has been dealt? Walker for Chan Ho Park and plenty of cash? By the way, did anyone get non-tendered, who has any decent upside? I saw names like Fogg and Franklin, but they do nothing for me.
  5. Good question. Gotta figured New York and Boston will come a callin soon. Hopefully, Hendry keeps holding his cards for a while. If Prior can't handle being dangled as trade bait & his feelings are crushed, I don't want him anyway. He hasn't pitched well enough to be considered untouchable. Perhaps he's getting a little bit of a swollen head?? Who knows. Good catch on chemistry btw. Thanks. Also, I think its worth throwing around the notion that Prior has no intention of staying here once he hits his walk year. Could he be Giles-like in that he will be headed back to So Cal no matter what? Its possible, I guess, that JH knows this or strongly suspects it and therefore is trying to trade Prior before his bargaining position becomes weak or desperate (the opposite of what he did with Sammy). Or maybe Prior privately requested a trade too.
  6. My guess is that on opening day they will be at $100M, which will grow to $105M in July if they are in the thick of the race, which I expect them to be in.
  7. You could be very well right. As a Trib shareholder, I was going more conservative.
  8. Is that an official "hoops radar reading"? No it's not. It's just a gut feel that Hendry has confidence that Wood will be ready and durable, and that Prior is expendable if it means getting Tejada and Bedard. He's clearly gambling looking to shake things up.
  9. That's a good explanation too. From what I read Billy Beane is very high on Bedard too. Hendry wants a lefty in the rotation, whose name isn't Rusch.
  10. I get the sense it's going to happen.
  11. If there's something wrong with Prior than why didn't hendry try and move him earlier in the hot stove? Couldn't he have gotten Abreu for him? It doesn't add up. Didn't want to trade him to a NL team.
  12. 16 players under contract at $76.3M: 5.00 Dempster 3.70 Eyre 4.00 Howry 9.00 Maddux 2.50 Prior 2.75 Rusch 2.00 Williamson 12.00 Wood 4.30 Barrett 1.50 Blanco 8.67 Lee 1.05 Mabry 2.50 Perez 10.50 Ramirez 2.50 Walker 4.33 Jones 4 arbitration eligible players at $16.6M (my estimate): 6.00 Zambrano 2.30 Hairston 2.80 Patterson 5.50 Pierre 6 players under Cubs control (each gets $350K) at $2.1M: 2.10 Novoa, Ohman, Williams, Wuertz, Cedeno, Murton So, 26 players at $95M TOTAL (I'm assuming Wood starts the season on the DL). Therefore, with a payroll projected to be $100M to start the year, the Cubs can technically still spend $5M plus the salaries of any players above they trade. So, for example, Tejada's $12M could definitely fit assuming they trade Zambrano and either Walker or Patterson, or Prior, Walker and Patterson; Vidro's $7M or Floyd's $6.5M could fit assuming they trade Hairston, Walker or Patterson. Barring any major trade, Hendry could still dump Walker's $2.5M, Patterson's $2.8M or Hairston's $2.3M for prospects, and still have approx. $7M to find a starter and a reserve right handed OF to give Jones a day-off here and there against a tough lefty. I'm still wondering if Hendry is silently/below the radar going after Jeff Weaver. Hoops
  13. Here's an angle to consider. Although it's not in the MacPhail playbook to offer an arbitration eligible player a long term contract until their final year of service prior to free agency, this may be the opportunity for Jim Hendry to offer Carlos Zambrano a 3 year "reasonable" deal, which would cover his two remaining arbitration eligible years plus his first year of free agency. Keep in mind that Zambrano is represented by Boras, which provided some difficulties in the last go-around (according to a source of mine) despite Hendry and Boras having a decent relationship. If you assume for a second that the Cubs could be troubled by Zambrano's work-load causing problems down the line, they may decide to do a deal with him. Despite his freakish injuries (collision with Giles and line drive off elbow), I think the Cubs still believe that Prior's near-perfect mechanics gives him the higher ceiling. If Zambrano doesn't take Hendry's 3 year deal, it gives Hendry plenty of reasons to deal him. Just a theory. On that notion, I don't discount Rogers' idea out of pocket.
  14. I think someone mentioned it already, but you have to figure Texas is more likely to deal Mench than Wilkerson. I'm not sure what Mench would cost - personally I'd rather keep Corey in RF, let him bat 7th and try to build up his value than play Mench. As for Wilkerson, I would think the Rangers would have asked for Jerome Williams and Rich Hill.
  15. You figure the Cubs would have to include a pitcher in the deal.
  16. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-0512180366dec18,1,1910896.column?page=2&cset=true&ctrack=1&coll=cs-sports-print In today's Chicago Tribune, Phil Rogers makes some Corey references in his Sunday column: (1) "He could get one last chance--as a right fielder, hitting low in the order with a green light to swing for the fences. It's not a bad option, really. It's definitely better than giving someone like Jacque Jones a two- or three-year contract." (2) "Texas has been in touch with at least five teams (the Cubs, Dodgers, Padres, Orioles and Blue Jays) about their outfield surplus, which grew when Brad Wilkerson was added in the Alfonso Soriano trade to Washington. The Rangers might swap Wilkerson or Kevin Mench for Patterson, hoping that highly respected hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo can get through to him."
  17. Quick scan (who their current option would be): Florida Marlins (I don't know) New York Mets (Kaz Matsui) San Diego Padres (Eric Young) St. Louis Cardinals (I don't know) Texas Rangers (D'Angelo Jimenez) Seattle Mariners (I don't know) Logic says that if Hendry is serious about trading Todd Walker, and he's marketed as a 2B, the above 6 teams are candidates. Still see some sort of deal with Texas for an OF. Of course, if Walker is being looked at around the league as a DH/1B/back-up 2B, then I guess teams liek Cleveland and Toronto among others are viable too. All the beat writers have been convinced that Walk is a goner. Maybe Hendry was bluffing all along just to see what other teams would offer.
  18. But don't you question his mental toughness? I do. I did when he was here also. I say been there, done that.
  19. Floyd has a no-trade clause for Boston. I've got to believe that it is one of the key factors in Minaya's decision making on trying to make a Manny deal work. If Minaya keeps Floyd and still acquires Manny, he has two problems: (1) who plays RF? and (2) who does he get to take Benson and Matsui - salaries that would need to be dumped?
  20. - Mariners send Jeremy Reed to Boston for Matt Clement. - Cubs send Corey Patterson and a prospect to Mariners for Raul Ibanez. - Cubs send Raul Ibanez, Rich Hill and an OF prospect for Bobby Abreu. - Phillies sign Jeff Weaver (and move Burrell to RF).
  21. I think he'll re-surface when more is known about the status of arbitration eligible players, i.e., which players are tendered vs. non-tendered. Just a guess.
  22. No. These are separate deals that have been in the works for some time before the Tejada thing came up. So Finley for Patterson or Walker for Mench? Alright, Ichiro was a long shot. Here's another one. What if one of the offers on the table was Todd Walker and Todd Wellemeyer for Cliff Floyd, Kaz Matsui and $2M cash? Mets still need a 2B, and desperately want to rid themselves of Matsui (change of scenery might do him some good anyway). Cubs agree to pick up a significant part of Matsui's contract, if the Mets throw Floyd into the mix. Floyd would play LF and bat 4th between Lee and Aramis (with Murton getting starts against lefties). Matsui competes with Neifi for 2B job. The money the Cubs have left gets invested into a 1-year deal for a RF. Perhaps, what's holding something like this up is the resolution of the Manny Ramirez situation. We know Cliff Floyd has a NTC for Boston, so he won't be part of that deal, but the Mets don't want to trade Floyd until they acquire another big bat. Hey, just throwing ideas out.
  23. No. These are separate deals that have been in the works for some time before the Tejada thing came up. So Finley for Patterson or Walker for Mench? While your second one is probably near the money, I wonder, as a long shot, if Hendry has put in an offer for Ichiro Suzuki.
  24. Any new news on that rumor? Last I heard, the names of Garland/Contreras, Uribe, Cotts and a prospect wer ebeing thrown around.
