  1. But don't our guys have to clear waivers too or at least have no team worse than Atlanta claim them in order to trade with the Braves? It's hard for me to believe someone not claiming a Pie or Marshall, etc...
  2. I would give lots of credit to Hendry's imagination if he pulled this off. Acquiring Andruw would be good protection if Aramis does indeed walk away.
  3. Jones has been claimed. Team unknown. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2539544 Braves must either trade him to the awarded team or pull him off waivers by saturday.
  4. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060803cubsbits,1,5461632.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines "Though sluggers Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano will be free agents this winter and the New York Yankees are unlikely to pick up Gary Sheffield's $13 million option, the Cubs appear satisfied with the status quo in left field." Reality or just a Tribune ploy to drive down somebody's price? You make the call. From my perspective, a definite ouch, if the former. Hoops
  5. Too many variables to assume. 1)The Cubs will be interested in Tejada after acq's Izturis for SS. 2)Balt. will field offers for Tejada. 3)No other team will be interested in Tejada. 4)The Cubs will outbid any team for Tejada. 5)The Cubs will have more to offer than any other team interested in him. 6)The Cubs have given up on Cedeno. Can Tejada play 2B? I'm sure that would not be his preference, but in any Tejada/Izturis middle IF, Cesar should be the one playing SS.
  6. Possibly. Depending on Washington's and Minnesota's 2007 payroll situations though, I don't think we can rule out Hendry making possible trades for Jose Vidro or Luis Castillo. Hendry has liked Vidro in the past, and if he is available you know Derrek and Juan will actively campaign for Castillo. NOT Castillo. He is getitng older, and speed is a major part of his game. You cannot count on Vidro to play a whole season. He is never healthy. Tejeda is the guy. A Package of Prior, Pie, Cedeno and another arm should get Tejeda. Including Prior will be overpaying in my opinion. The key is the 3 years and $38M remaining on Tejada's deal (2007-2009). If Mr. Hendry absorbs most of it, I think he can get him for Cedeno, one of Marshall/Marmol/Guzman/Hill and a high prospect.

  8. Folks, am I counting correctly? If so, any thoughts as to who they might add to make it 40? Wade Miller? Mike Fontenot? 40-Man Roster Pitchers 54 David Aardsma 46 Ryan Dempster 47 Scott Eyre 37 Angel Guzman 53 Rich Hill 62 Bob Howry 49 Carlos Marmol 45 Sean Marshall (15-day Disabled List) 51 Juan Mateo 44 Roberto Novoa 50 Will Ohman 22 Mark Prior 33 Glendon Rusch 20 Jae Kuk Ryu 57 Jerome Williams 34 Kerry Wood (15-day Disabled List) 43 Michael Wuertz 38 Carlos Zambrano Catchers 8 Michael Barrett 24 Henry Blanco 51 Jose Reyes 58 Geovany Soto Infielders 5 Ronny Cedeno 56 Brian Dopirak 3 Cesar Izturis 25 Derrek Lee (15-day Disabled List) 57 Scott Moore 40 Phil Nevin 13 Neifi Perez 16 Aramis Ramirez 7 Ryan Theriot Outfielders B/T Ht Wt DOB 4 Freddie Bynum (15-day Disabled List) 11 Jacque Jones 17 John Mabry 19 Matt Murton -- Miguel Negron 29 Angel Pagan 68 Felix Pie 9 Juan Pierre
  9. I'm guessing that Hendry will take a strong look at Adam Kennedy.
  10. I'm sure many of you will trash me because I'm looking for a silver lining in a cloud or being too optimistic, but here goes anyway: This is my interpretation of the Maddux for Izturis deal. I think Jim Hendry has his eyes set on acquiring Miguel Tejada this offseason. Tejada can say whatever he wants to be positive, but his body language is clearly saying that he wants out of Baltimore. I think Jim Hendry breathed a huge sigh of relief when Tejada wasn't dealt to Houston or LA today, and I feel he is going for it in December. In order to acquire Tejada, he will probably have to give up a major league SS, a major league ready pitcher and a prospect. By trading Maddux, he opens the rotation for Angel Guzman. Therefore, the Cubs can showcase any 3 of Marshall, Marmol, Hill and Guzman in their rotation for the rest of the season (Marshall out right now). Assume Prior and Zambrano are off limits, and Hendry tells Baker that Rusch is not to be started. By trading for Izturis, he can showcase Cedeno and Izturis at middle infield. Assuming he picks up most of Tejada's deal, Hendry can probably sell Baltimore on taking back one of the aforementioned pitchers, either Cedeno or Izturis and then a prospect. Hoops
  11. Hendry is your Fredo. http://www.godfatherfilms.com/films_images/mike-fredo-kiss.jpg Then, who's Michael?
  12. Maddux has been dealt to LA. Commisioner's approval required because more than $1M changing hands.
  13. I told my buddy something similar: "you guys need arms much more than bats or gloves."
  14. I just heard from a buddy in Beantown: WEEI is reporting that Theo Epstein is having discussions with Julio Lugo's agents about a contract extension. The implication is that the Red Sox, Devil Rays and perhaps one other team have agreed to a deal that would send Lugo to the Red Sox. Boston won't do the deal until Lugo accepts a new deal. Staying on it. Hoops
  15. The Dodgers would be insane to trad Guzman, Kemp or LaRoche for Maddux. Yes, but here is a situation where Colletti's utmost devotion (some may call it blind devotion) to Maddux could really work out in the Cubs favor. I keep hearing the Cubs want 2 top prospects from LA.
  16. ESPN has it as a done deal...nice move for the Tigers. Surely Pittsburgh could have received more than a bit prospect? Wasn't Oakland or Anaheim willing to give more in return for Casey?
  17. I wonder if the next column will say: Cubs extend Maddux for 1 more season at $5M.
  18. That's a good question. Yesterday, I thought Boston would pull off some sort of 3-way deal involving sending Loretta to St. Louis, a prospect or two to Washington and Livan coming to the Sox. But with the Cardinals getting Belliard, what other contender is badly in need for a 2b? Now, I am still wondering if the Red Sox and A's will pull a Zito for prospects move.
  19. Unless they also have a Tejada for Ensberg and pitching deal in the works. This may all be the Rocket's doing!
  20. Ted, I guess you're not in the camp that believes the Cubs can go 50-10 and win a post-season berth. Hoops
  21. Marcus Giles' .707 OPS is rather unimpressive. And considering he's arb. eligible, and will probably make somewhere in the $4.5-5.5M range in 2007, I say pass big time.
  22. Some new info: http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/angels/la-sp-angrep26jul26,1,5674340.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-mlb-angels&ctrack=1&cset=true "Among the third basemen the Angels have inquired about are the Chicago Cubs' Aramis Ramirez (.266, 22 homers, 63 runs batted in), Arizona's Chad Tracy (.278, 14 homers, 56 RBIs) and Houston's Morgan Ensberg (.236, 19 homers, 44 RBIs)." I repeat, Hendry better know with 99.99% certainty what Aramis' intentions are with respect to that void clause and/or have some strategy in place because Aramis is going to be very tempted to explore free agency with the Angels and Dodgers both having money to spend and holes at 3B.
  23. Toronto is the team that has been most linked to Julio Lugo in the past week. They seem most desperate to add a SS. When the Giants agreed to pick up Shea Hillenbrand (and his remaining salary), it freed up enough dollars for the Jays to take on Lugo's remaining salary. But will Tampa trade him to Toronto? That is the question - will Tampa be satisfied with Toronto's prospects? I have no idea - I am sure one of you can educate us all on the Blue Jays' system. The Mets have been rumored as well - they'd move Lugo to 2B. I started looking at other contenders besides Toronto, who might be willing to look at shortstops at the deadline. 5 teams jumped out: Boston, the White Sox, Oakland, Houston and Colorado. Phil Rogers had a Tejada to Houston rumor this morning. But what about the Red Sox, White Sox, A's and Rockies - could they position themselves to trade for Lugo? And in that case, is there an angle for Hendry to deal Neifi to Toronto? If the Cubs picked up most of Neifi's salary in 2007, would Ricciardi make the trade (returning a low level prospect)?
