  1. Would make a much nicer addition than Carlos Lee. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6149242 Referring to another player mentioned in Rosenthal's article, I wouldn't mind trading for Jason Jennings if the price wasn't too steep.
  2. For 6-8 million bucks (if not more), I'd be inclined to take my chances that one of Guzman, Marshall, Mateo, or Marmol would be able to put up an ERA approximating 4.50. I'd even be more apt to rush Gallagher up to the bigs and take my chances with him than throw money at Padilla. Gallagher has an advanced approach to the game, and I think he'd be able to handle the adjustment fairly well. Veal definately needs some more seasoning, though... Here's my thinking and pardon me if I'm being too harsh or impatient with the young guys. I didn't see anytning in those guys last year that made me believe they are worthy of being in the 2007 rotation. The only guys I want in the fifth spot of the rotation are either Wade Miller or Mark Prior - I'm optimistic that one of those guys will be healthy (and I'm assuming Miller will be back). Figuring Z as the #1 and Hill as the #4 is the approach I would take. Therefore, the Cubs absolutely need to sign a #2 and a #3. Assuming Ramirez is signed, in my estimation, the offseason cannot be viewed as successful if we don't at least have 2 new starters in the fold plus 1 new bopper at either CF, RF or SS and a decent OBP guy playing 2B or SS. If the payroll is truly $115M, the Cubs have ample resources to get it done!
  3. Ted, Goony may have answered this in another thread, but I will ask you as well. Has there been any talk over there about what the Yankees would want in return for Sheff? I imagine part of the answer may come down to how much of Sheff's $13M the trading team is willing to take on. I think about $4M of that is deferred salary.
  4. Another list. No real predictions per se. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6146228
  5. Did anyone listen to WGN radio sports reports yesterday afternoon or Sports Central? My dad was in the car and he thinks he heard David Kaplan say that Aramis will be signed by Saturday after he gets a few more bucks. Can anyone confirm?
  6. That's been the talk for a week or so. Sorry, didn't know. Haven't seen any stories about Garcia for Sheffield here. Garcia and Crede were brought up in the ARod rumors.
  7. Shall we start the Gary Sheffield for Freddy Garcia rumours? Sox need a LF (or so you would think with all the Podsednik trade or non-tender stories). Yankees are definitely looking to upgrade the rotation. Sox want to move a starter to make room for McCarthy. Both Sheff and Freddy have one year left on their contracts - money is pretty close with Sheff at $13M and Freddy at $10M. I'm sure the Yanks prefer an NL club. I think the Cubs should look into getting him. If he's healthy, he'll probably put up OPS numbers as good as CLee or Soriano without the headache of a long term overpaid deal.
  8. After doing some further investgating on the buyout subject, I think you guys are right: Wood's buyout should be added to the 2006 payroll, and not the 2007 payroll as I had done. I became convinced after reading this item in the Toronto Sun regarding Benjie Molina's buyout: "Bengie Molina filed for free agency Tuesday, about two weeks after the Toronto Blue Jays declined a US$7.5 million option on the catcher for 2007. Molina received a $500,000 buyout instead, bringing his salary to $5 million in 2006, when he batted .284 with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 117 games." Thanks for setting me straight guys. Hoops
  9. Jeff, I agree with you on Z and O. I had Prior a little higher at a generous $5M. Hoops
  10. Correct on all counts. I thought I'd start with just guaranteed contracts. We can add a player and his money when it becomes definitive. Don't worry too much about the Murtons, Cedenos, Marshalls, Hills, etc... Even if the Cubs had 10 of them on the roster, we're talking $4M max. total, since they are all pre-arbitration eligible. I have made estimates on the 3 arbitration eligible Cubs: Zambrano, Prior and Ohman, so I can include them if you want.
  11. Not necessarily. There has been talk here of shifting Burrell to 1B: "Burrell's representatives indicated yesterday that he would accept a trade to the Giants. That team could ask Burrell to switch back to first base, the position he played in 2000. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel last night reiterated his opinion that Burrell, drafted as a third baseman, could switch to first despite having made himself into a good leftfielder. A switch might be necessary, since Burrell's outfield range has been limited the past two seasons by a foot injury."
  12. http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15917763.htm Sounds like Gillick is working on a Burrell for Benitez deal. Assuming little to no cash traded hands, it would give Philly some headroom in '07 and '08 - their main target seems to be Soriano. Hoops
  13. They would have to seriously upgrade via trade, because that would be ugly. Yes. Beyond having Aramis, that group certainly doesn't represent the big arm and the additional big bat this club desperately needs.
  14. Au contraire mon frere - Hendry has targeted him in the past. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hendry get him to play 3B, SS or 2B depending on the other moves.
  15. Now you can dream about Rich Aurilia being our 3B.
  16. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Right, wrong, sane or crazy, these lists are just fun to read. They have the Cubs signing, Aramis Ramirez (3B), Gary Matthews Jr. (CF), Kei Igawa (SP), Kerry Wood (RP) and Rich Aurilia (2B). Hoops
  17. It's always great for us as a community when the esteemed Mr. Miles sets us straight on topics the board can only speculate on. Wouldn't it be great if he was GM? Thanks, Hoops, but no, it would not be great!! Oh! Come on - we want to go to the post-season man. Just think if a sabermetric savvy guy like yourself made personnel decisions for this club. Even at half of Hendry's inflated price, you'd be set and a hero! Well, you are already our hero...

  19. Is that true? I've seen recent columns from Mr. Miles and from the Sun Times guys stating their opinions that Hendry should let Pierre walk because he's not worth a 3 year - $27M deal. The Suntimes guy I read wants Pierre back. DeLuca or Marriotti?
  20. Is that true? I've seen recent columns from Mr. Miles and from the Sun Times guys stating their opinions that Hendry should let Pierre walk because he's not worth a 3 year - $27M deal.
  21. Whether you like him or not, or like his writing style or not, Mr. Rozner has always been a big fan of a player's positive attitude and hard work ethic. That's been my observation reading his work since 1988. That's why he was always very pro-Dawson, Grace, Sandberg, Dunston, Maddux, Jordan, Hinrich, Grossman, etc... and negative towards guys like Palmeiro, Sosa, Patterson, Aramis, Horace Grant, Jalen Rose, Cade McNown, etc... I think what he is pointing out is his perception that Aramis is lackadaisical, and it really bugs him. Ancillary thought: I think he's questioning whether or not it makes sense to pay a guy $16M a year for 5 years if he can't put up numbers in April and May? Just my $0.02: I really like the thought of Aramis being a Cub. I really don't like the idea of paying him $80M over 5 years.
  22. I'd make that deal in a heartbeat. It would be a salary wash for 2007, and it would free the Cubs from $11M in committed contracts for 2008. Ancillary benefits include being able to re-sign Wood for the bullpen, and forcing Hendry to get another OF.
  23. Back when I was writing in the Cubs.com message board days, I used to divide the signing bonus equally across the guaranteed years of a deal. But since I joined Tim's website (and around the time I spoke to a source, who is somewhat knowledgable about these things), I made it a practice to just add the signing bonus to the first year salary except in the case where the signing bonus is clearly stipulated by contract to be paid in installments. For example, when Wood and Jones signed their deals, it was clearly written that the signing bonus would be paid in annual installments, so I took that into account in the salary analysis. On the other hand, when Eyre and Howry signed, nothing was stipulated about the payment of bonus, so I took the whole sum and added it to year 1's salary.
  24. Didn't he also like Rich Aurilia at one point? I could see Hendry signing him to play 3B for a season.
