  1. Normally, I don't like to under-estimate or over-estimate any one game or any one series over another. Obviously, the one series left with Milwaukee is going to be big - August 28-30 at Wrigley. But my gut tells me that the most important series is going to be the 4 games at Wrigley September 3-6 against the Dodgers. I think this series will decide who gets the inside track to the post-season. Long way to go, lots can happen, but I have circled those 4 games as critical.
  2. Based on ESPN, he's 39 and making $850,000 this year. Batting .282 with 14 HRs and 36 RBIs. OBP = .348, SLG = .544, OPS = .892 Has started 21 games at 1B, 18 games at LF and 9 games at RF I have no clue what Toronto would want for him.
  3. Just heard this from one of my sources on the East Coast. He heard this morning that Jim Hendry has dispatched a scout up to Toronto this weekend to look at Matt Stairs. The Ward injury, Floyd's daily health woes and the stretch run has convinced Hendry he needs to add a veteran lefty bat. When I asked my source about Piniella's comments in the last 2 weeks about wanting another righty bat, the source said it was an "intentional smokescreen to outflank some other teams." It's a rumor. Take it for what it's worth. Hoops
  4. Of course, I'm glad Aramis just hit a 3 run HR! But part of me would have liked to see Jacque come up again with runners in scoring position. Then again, Jacque just struck out.
  5. If so, I will point out that counting his 3 plate appearances to-date today, Jacque Jones has a .928 OPS in the month of July. 36 plate appearances (31 at bats), 12 hits (9 singles, 3 doubles) and 4 walks resulting in: .444 OBP .484 SLG If Gerald Perry has been working with him, it does look like something has finally clicked (for now). 6. Hendry probably still thinks there is still a potential taker for Wade in the next few weeks.
  7. Bruce Levine was on ESPN radio AM 1000 last night with JD and Hood. He "predicted" Scott Moore would get the call-up today based on Ward being a left-handed hitter/1B/RF type. According to Bruce yesterday, Ward's injury is very, very serious, i.e. could be out for the year type - not sure what the news is today. As for Cedeno, Bruce thinks he'll be up soon. His guess is that Cedeno will be up when Lee is back next week and Fox or Moore will be sent back down. Last thing he said last night is that he feels Hendry will add an arm and a veteran bat at the trading deadline - mentioned Lofton as a run scorer, but thought it could also be an RBI guy in the OF - Cubs are a bit disappointed in Floyd's day-to-day injuries. 8. Rumor I heard is that Toronto is trying to acquire Jack Wilson.
  9. It was simply to light a fire under Koyie Hill. 5 RBIs today!!!
  10. I still think they need to upgrade the offense. I agree with Dayn that it doesn't look like they'll do anything else with C after the Kendall acquisition. I don't see anyone available on the trade market, who could be considered an upgrade at SS. At any rate the team seems high on Theriot, and Cedeno is doing wonderfully at AAA. Therefore, OF still seems to be the logical choice to upgrade. I'm not ruling out another starting pitcher either.
  11. Shea's supposedly a Todd Walker-esque clubhouse cancer. Already have Izturis and Jones complaining about PT - don't need another whiner. Hoops
  12. It appears to me that playing Jones is a pure "showcase to trade" move. Therefore, given Pie's recent struggles, I don't see playing Jones for a week to 10 days as a bad move if they stick to the goal. Jones did go 2 for 4 in a recent game - maybe he is showing signs to the coaches during BP that he's coming out of his funk. Incidentally, Bruce Levine of ESPN radio AM 1000 has consistently said over the past 3 weeks that in his opinion, Jones should be kept as the Cubs 4th OF. Levine said last week that the Cubs main priorities are to deal Izturis and Eyre. Easier said than done, of course.
  13. Given what Mr. Miles wrote in his column today about the Cubs having budget this year, but keeping alive the notion that they probably will not take on any contracts beyond this year, it would seem that if there is a player out there, who started the year being owed between $11 and $17M (prorated between $5.5 and $8.5M for the remainder of the season) and is in his walk year, that would be the type of player Hendry would target as a cash even or near cash even trade for Jones. If OF, SS, C and pitcher are the positions for upgrade, I suppose guys like Suzuki, Bonds, ARod, Abreu, Kendall, Gagne, Buerhle, etc.. would be targets.
  14. Ken Rosenthal is right with you. He too is wondering out loud if the post-season might include Cubs AND Brewers. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6988608?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49 "Don't rule out the possibility of the NL wild card coming out of the Central division. The Phillies and Braves have faded in the East, and the second-best team in the West might not be better than the Brewers or Cubs. Keep in mind also that the Central includes three of the league's four worst teams — the Astros, Pirates and Reds. After Tuesday, the Brewers face those clubs 30 times, the Cubs 33. And the other team in the division, the Cardinals, isn't exactly imposing . . ." "
  15. Money being an issue, I keep hoping that Hendry will find a way to trade Jones and his 1.5 years and $7M in a similar manner that he dealt Todd Hundley and his 2 years and $12M after the 2002 season. Any ideas on that?
  16. I think both parties came to the realization that they are both better off sticking together.
  17. Maybe they'll focus on moving Contreras, Garland or Vazquez now to help re-build. Vazquez may be viewed as their best pitcher, so he could probably bring the most back in return. I sense moving Contreras will be their first choice.
  18. You might want to double check my data - I did it rather quickly in the morning.
  19. Through Sunday, Cesar Izturis has a .303 OBP for the season. This may or may not surprise folks: there are 10 teams, whose main starting SS or SS platoon tandem had lower OBPs that Izturis: .258 - Lugo - BOSTON .275 - Everett - HOUSTON .278 - Greene - SAN DIEGO .283 - Uribe - WHITE SOX .284 - Vizquel - SAN FRANCISCO .289 - Crosby - OAKLAND .295 - Pena - KANSAS CITY .301 - Drew - ARIZONA .301 - Gonzales - CINCINNATI .302 - Clayton/McDonald - TORONTO I'm sure many of those guys are better sluggers than Izturis, but I was still surprised by the OBP figures. 4 or 5 of those teams are considered contenders. On the surface, it would seem Hendry could have an easier time trading Izturis than Jones. Toronto intrigues me as both of their guys are much older than Cesar, and both are free agents after this year - Cesar has a team option, which while steep at $5.45M might be viewed by Ricciardi as a better option than the bleak SS free agency class after the 2007 season. Hoops
  20. What if Hendry traded Jones, Fontenot and a pitching prospect to MacPhail for Brian Roberts? Roberts becomes the starting 2B for the Cubs - surprise! Even cash deal for 2008 as Jones and Roberts offset salaries; Jones plays CF after MacPhail DFAs Corey Patterson, a free agent, who will not be back with the Orioles anyway. MacPhail gets out from having to pay Roberts $8M in 2009 and Jacque is a free agent after 2008. Hoops
  21. I'd be shocked if he went there only because I have read in several places that they won't meet Williams' likely asking price in terms of prospects. I'm still thinking Phillies.
  22. ... not impossible. Now, that would be a surprising trade if it happened. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6955650 "The Brewers, leading the NL Central by 8 ½ games, are kicking around the idea of trading for White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle — a move that, while a longshot, would make sense." The link also says this: "Good luck to the Cubs in their continuing efforts to trade outfielder Jacque Jones, who has a .295 on-base percentage and two homers in 201 at-bats. Oh, and forget about the Cubs acquiring Reds right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. If the team can't sign right-hander Carlos Zambrano due to its ownership change, then it certainly can't take on Griffey's $12.5 million a year contract through '08, plus a $4 million buyout or $16.5 million club option for '09."
