Cubs-Padres Game Three Thread: Sudden Death Baseball

It all comes down to this. The Cubs and Padres square off to determine who has the right to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS.

Padres pitching dominated Cubs hitters on Wednesday, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 in Chicago. The starters are right-handers Jameson Taillon for Chicago and Yu Darvish for San Diego. In 2025, Taillon posted a 3.68 ERA, and Darvish a 5.38 as an injury-plagued season limited him to only 15 starts. Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) tells a different story, though; Taillon has a 2025 FIP of 5.00, and Darvish has a 4.83 FIP. This game is unlikely to become a pitcher's duel, at least until both teams reach into their respective bullpens.

    Cubs Bullpen Usage
Game 1 (Tuesday), Chicago’s relief corps delivered 4 2/3 perfect innings behind starter Matthew Boyd. The sequence was Daniel Palencia for 1 2/3, then Drew Pomeranz, Andrew Kittredge, and Brad Keller covering the final three innings. In Game 2 (Wednesday), the Cubs used an opener approach. Andrew Kittredge handled the 1st, followed by Shota Imanaga for bulk innings. After that, lefty Caleb Thielbar, righty Colin Rea, and lefty Taylor Rogers finished it off; their batters faced were Kittredge 5, Imanaga 17, Thielbar 4, Rea 6, Rogers 3.  Kittredge is the only Cubs pitcher to appear in both games so far, and he is likely out for Thursday's game as a result.

    Padres Bullpen Usage
Game 1, San Diego followed starter Nick Pivetta with Adrian Morejon, Mason Miller, and Jeremiah Estrada. In Game 2, Dylan Cease started and worked 3 2/3. Adrian Morejon covered 2 1/3 innings and threw 33 pitches, Mason Miller struck out the first five batters he faced and threw 27 pitches, and Robert Suarez recorded a four-out save to close a 3-0 win. It's likely that both Morejon and Miller will be unavailable for Thursday's game, but given the nature of the situation, it might be all hands on deck for Mike Shildt.

I was pretty chill Game 1 and 2. Today with the early lead I started getting nervous because advancing to the NLDS and facing the Brewers started to feel real.

I was all in every game. It is the modern day playoffs. Have to be excited about that.  Lots of pacing and muttering under my breath. This wins means the season was a good one. Sure, I think they can win another one. But I am not going to let that expectation temper my excitement of winning the WC round.

So Yankees win means I can watch game 1 in its entirety. Game 2 starting at 4:09 AM local time is gonna be rough though!

Cubs have the more recent World Series.

That would still be true even if the Cubs didn’t win in 2016.

For pitching, the schedule with three off days between games one and five, gives Counsell a lot of options.

Boyd had less than sixty pitches in game one, so he can go two or three innings on Saturday; so can Rea. Then Counsell can juggle them for games four and five anyway he likes. He can also pitch the heck out of the bullpen. All the relievers can pitch four games with no problems.

I think I'd rather just have them start Rea or Assad, have a short leash and use the pen since we have the day off on Sunday. Then let Boyd start on normal rest in Game 2.

Jed deserves some real credit man. Not every move is going to work out and I wish he had gotten Bregman, but look at how many critical arms he brought in this year along with Tucker and Kelly. He really revamped the pitching staff in a major way. And his belief in his development staff during his dumpster diving landed some real gems for incredible value.

    Boyd

    Rea

    Keller

    Thielbar

    Pomeranz

    Kittredge

The Chafin trade took some time to bear fruit but Palencia really arrived at a perfect time.

Swanson has been one of the best FA signings over the last 3 years.

Theyve won 94 games because he did as he attempted to do: raised the floor at every position.  It's a very deep team that withstood a lot of lengthy injuries to critical players.

Same here. I watched every out and was definitely happy when they won Game 1. But today I was all in.

huh? Boyd only threw like 70 pitches game 1 and he'll be on 4 days rest

It would be 3 days rest but i guess it is possible they pitch Boyd on Sat Gane 1.

With all these off days coming this series you figure the pens will used a lot and SP get pulled quick.  Maybe not in game 1 though since Cubs pen may still be a little gassed from Padres series.

I agree with all of this. Maybe people will stop ragging on Swanson. He is worth his contract and been a very solid player. They won this series because of him. I think Caesar asked what positive thing does anyone remember about Swanson. Well this would be one.

I seriously doubt Boyd pitching on 3 days rest. Honestly, there is no reason for it either. If Boyd pitches game 2 he can come back for game 5, if need be. Go with Assad on a short start. Maybe 3 innings. Follow with Rea and/or Soroka and get through 6.

Padres have every right to be upset about that strike call but this seems a bit over the top.  Colorful language warning

Meh. Nico Hoerner was also pretty clearly safe but because of the out call on the field the run didn't count.

And depending on which automated strike zone you go by, the umpire was right on the strike call.

I heard @Jason Ross mention this on the postgame reaction stream, but I have a hard time believing that to be the case.  Maybe my brain just cant unsee the K-Zone, but that pitch looks clearly low..

Well I guess it's between Boyd, Rea, and Assad lol.  I assume they announce it some time tomorrow.  Whoever starts Game 1 and 2 will likely start Game 4 an 5..

All 3 starts this past series the pitchers went 4 innings, something to keep in mind.  With all the off days this series you could potentially see pen guys like Keller, Palencia, Kittredge in every single game if Counsell wanted.

Unfortunately Peralta has eaten us alive the last 2 seasons.  Woodruff though is questionable for the series being on the IL since Sept 18 with a lat strain.

That's disgusting behaviour, who was that?.  Blaming the umps for losing is weak 100% of the time IMO.  They're human beings and do their best and aren't perfect just like any player.

Wasn't able to watch any games this series so im struck by watching the highlights at how close Dansby was to fulfilling Cesar's prophecies. Things could have been so different if those balls that were bobbled rolled just a few feet further.

I think they go Assad or Rea for game 1. Boyd game 2, Shota game 3, Tailon game 4 and back to Boyd game 5. Peralta is good, but he will probably only pitch 5 or 6 innings.

Except neither play would have been an error. He made great plays to get to the balls he got to.

He posted it earlier in the thread, but Statcast has it in the zone

    a23754b07ecd1589bef23cb695b5a49d.png

It's a great example of the type of pitch people have warned is going to run counter to people's expectations under ABS.  The nature of the flight of the ball means a pitch that just barely clips the bottom of the zone is going to appear way worse than basically any other pitch that is barely a strike.

He was lucky to get to that one. No chance that would have been an error. Just getting a glove on it was a tough play.

All a pitch has to do to be a strike is cross the plate at any point in the zone. So even if it crosses the plane of the plate by the seam of the baseball and then falls out of the zone by the time it is caught, it's still a strike.

I have no idea the accuracy of the statcast measurements, but all of these broadcast KZones are not official. They are all just estimations.
