"Jocketty predicted Sunday that transactions "will happen earlier" this year because of a relatively thin crop of free agents. With outfielder Reggie Sanders, second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and former 22-game winner Matt Morris no longer under control and few free agent alternatives to replace them, the Cardinals and numerous others probably will be more aggressive earlier in the process."

"The Cardinals are among those teams interested in the availability of Los Angeles Angels outfielders Steve Finley and Darin Erstad in addition to the Cincinnati Reds' Austin Kearns and Adam Dunn. Accompanied at the meetings by assistant GM John Mozeliak and vice president for player personnel Jerry Walker, Jocketty also confirmed the club's interest in free agents Brian Giles and Jacque Jones."

I think Jocketty has had a lot of luck too.

Guys like Grudzielanek, Womack, and Eckstein are not the type of guys I would want the Cubs going after. (Sadly, two of them are recent former Cubs)...

He also gave up a whole lot for Mulder. We'll see how that trade pans out in the next few years, though. Might end up a good move, might not.

on espn insider rumors:

See Giles in St. Louis?

Nov 7 - There's been speculation that Giles, a California native, wants to stay on the West Coast, but agent Joe Bick said the outfielder's main objective is signing with a team that has a chance to be a postseason contender for the duration of his next contract.

"We have said if the right deal can be done with the Padres, Brian would like to stay there," Bick told ESPN.com Insider Jerry Crasnick. "But at this point in time there's nothing to make us believe that's the case."

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the Padres offered Giles a three-year deal for more than $21 million. Bick said the dollar figure was higher than the newspaper's report, but added that the Padres rescinded their offer a few days after the World Series.

Giles has made 646 career starts in left field, 402 in right field and 300 in center. His ability to play center field makes him a potential fit for both the Red Sox and Yankees. But many baseball people think the frontrunner is St. Louis, which tried to trade for him this season and has a pressing need for a left-handed hitting outfielder with the pending retirement of Larry Walker.

This was the list of teams they said were interested:

Cardinals

Red Sox

Mariners

Yankees

Indians

You may be right dav but I still look at the wins over the past X amount of years and give him the benefit of doubt.

Did Jocketty hire LaRussa?

I quite like the fact we haven't spoken about any potential FA signings we always seem to make it known we are interested only to get outbid. Maybe we are going for the stealth approach!!!. Then again maybe we sign no one and end up with Macias and Perez oh happy days!!!

i think it's well known that Furcal is their #1 priority. That isn't stealth.

we're probably just not that interested in Giles. With other big spenders on the loose and in need of an OFer, he's very likely to get more than Hendry is willing to pay ($ and years).

Well, we have heard reports that the Cubs are going hard after Giles. I think many are just choosing to disregard it because it was Gammons.

The Cubs don't need an OBP machine like Giles, they need a speedy table setter like Furcal. :wink:

When did Gammons link Giles to the Cubs?

Scroll down to Bruno's post. Heck, you even replied.. :wink:

EDIT -

Bump!

Just heard Gammons on the Dan Parick Show with more FA signing predictions. Here is what I remember:

Furcal--> Cubs

Giles--> Cubs "the early leader for his services"

B.J. Ryan--> Mets or possibly Boston or Detroit

Damon--> Boston

Bernie Williams--> DH for Texas

Konerko--> White Sox "Wouldn't surprise me to see them trade Garcia and have Mccarthy takes his spot.

Nomar--> Open to position change (i.e. outfield) Dodgers interested, no mention of Cubs.

Wagner--> Philly

Sosa--> Whoever gives him a 1/yr 5-6Million first

Palmeiro--> Retirement

lmao. i just remembered Gammons saying we were looking for an "impact corner outfielder" in the ESPN Radio 11/4/05 thread.

it's kind of funny that ESPN insider doesn't even have the Cubs listed as a possible suitor for Giles (they have: Cardinals, Red Sox, Mariners, Yankees, Indians). I guess Gammons isn't an "insider." :lol:

Gammons seems to be the only soul who thinks Giles in Chicago is more than a pipe dream. I hope he's right.

I have to wonder where Gammons got the idea that the Cubs would be interested in Giles and what you suggested about Gammons just looking at the Cubs needs and putting Giles in their seems to be the way it might be.

Also, the ESPN insider is often wrong, a lot more times then they are right.

They really run the gamut on the OFs mentioned. Young, old, high OBP, low OBP, over the hill, lots of potential, etc.
