The two brightest (young and performing) pitching prospects in the DSL each had good days. For DSL1 - 6'1", 190 lbs, 17-year-old RHP Yovanny Cruz pitched 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 ER while not walking anybody and striking out 7 with a 6 GO to 2 AO. While 6'0", 175 lbs., 18-year-old LHP, Didier Vargas went 6 allowing 4 hits, 1 run (unearned), 0 walks and 7 Ks with 10 GO and just 1 AO for DSL2. Vargas has been very consistent, in 11 starts he has allowed more than 1 earned run only once (3 ER in 5.2 IP). Now if we only had some scouting reports...

On the year:

Cruz: 46.1 IP, 45 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 47 K, 4.08 ERA.

Vargas: 50.2 IP, 28 H, 1 HR, 21 BB, 47 K, 0.89 ERA.

The Cubs have already promoted 17-year-old RHP Danis Correa to Mesa. He's held his own stateside thus far. 17-year-old LHP Jonathan Bruzual, who was the only pitcher from the 2016 class that had any sort of buzz that I was aware of (and it was minimal at that), has struggled mightily in his inaugural season but has shown flashes.

The Cubs have done okay in the penalty years where they couldn't spend more than $300,000 on any one player. So far this year, they got two top 50 players in SS Luis Verdugo and RHP Florencio Serrano. Not coincidentally, both players hail from Mexico. In addition to the 4 pitchers already mentioned, 2016 yielded 18-year-old OFer Carlos Pacheco (.243/.387/.435, 7 HRs, 40 BB/56 K) and 19-year-old CFer Alonso Gaitan (.308/.356/.398, 10 BB/19 K) both out of Mexico. 19-year-old (just turned) catcher Jonathan Soto out of Venezuala has acquitted himself well at the plate (.302/.377/.428, 20 BB/18K). No reports as to how he's done behind it.
