The 2013 draft does have Karsten Whitson at the top, and at this early stage, he looks like a possible top 3 pick. Tis early, though, and a lot will change.

I'd have to double check ages, but I think the general feeling right now seems to be that Arias has the most potential (part of that is that he's physically bigger than the other two). That said, a long way to go. Between Peralta/Paulino, it's probably close.

Not too big on Whitson really...would take almost all of this year's high ranking college arms over him. I'm big on size and athleticism on an early pick when it's there to have it, and don't think he has enough of it.

My thinking Liria was LH was the only thing that made him truly interesting to me.

What do you know about Arias, Paulino, and Peralta? Youngest? Best stuff? Best size? Athleticism?

Man do I hope they land Gausman...I'm fine with a few of the bat options but I want an upside arm that can move quickly really bad.

Arias is the youngest, biggest and throws the hardest. Peralta should be at Peoria and presumably will be when he's stretched out. Peralta, Paulino and Willengton Cruz were the 3 best DSL Cub pitchers in 2010 while Arias was the best DSL Cub pitcher in 2011.

Ryne Stanek was a week away from being eligible for the 2012 draft as a draft eligible sophomore and I have no doubt he would be the top college pitcher this year if he were eligible. Between Stanek and Whitson, that's a nice 1-2 college pitcher combo.

Plus Dylan Covey was a 1st rounder out of HS and is eligible again in '13.

I have to stop forgetting about Stanek because damn he is impressive (tall, loose, athletic, wipeout stuff, has the kind of fastball you look for and I think it translates to starting as a pro)...Covey I liked coming out of HS, but not sure he's a top tier pick right now.

Regarding the bats, I like Austin Wilson and think he's improved his pitch recognition but I think Kris Bryant has to be considered the top college bat at this moment for '13.

Regardless, you don't make draft decisions this year based on what next year's draft looks like.

Any idea on how his breaking ball is looking? Granted, with relievers, you probably need half a season or so to get a feel on consistency of stuff.

Wilson and Bryant are real close...I think that one will be a good battle. Really like Wilson, and don't see Bryant as significant better or worse yet. Both should bring plenty of RH power to the table.

That said, you're pretty right on not drafting based on what's coming out next year. That was a little ridiculous to say considering the nature of a draft.

Agreed. My simple hope for this upcoming draft is that the first round pick is based on ceiling. Don't care college or prep, don't care positional or pitcher. It seems like a lot of Cubs fans are pushing for a fast-moving arm, and while that'd be nice, ceiling is more significant to me, as we have some mid-rotation ceiling arms in the upper levels.

With the new rules, I can understand it if they want to go signability with the comp picks or some of the early round picks, although I'm not sure how I'd feel until we see who the guys in play are (tbh, I see someone posted something on Sickels about what they think teams will do in the upcoming draft, and my general hunch is that ... all the teams will be sort of feeling it out this year, as they get a gauge on what they can do. Could lead to some craziness where teams load up early and punt the draft, or could lead to some ultra-conservativeness as well, where teams perhaps go signability early. Hard to know).

And with that, I'll go check on what's being said in the amateur forum.

No idea, and obviously that's the big question. We know he can pump that FB in there and he probably could get by with just a FB at high-A. I'm glad he's had a few 2 IP outings this season, that should help him work on the breaking ball.

Next year, with the IFA budgets ranging from 1.8 to 5 mill, I wonder when that money can start being traded around? A team will be able to acquire through trade, up to half their allotment. I know this is a very random place to bring this up, but since we're talking 2013 draft, I thought it made sense here. If we're bottom 5, I'd expect us to be sitting on 4.5 mill or so. And would think we'd try our best to add as much extra as possible too. Maybe even to the extent that we hold on to a couple of trade pieces for this particular reason, if budgets can be dealt starting this off-season.

Really wonder why they can't figure out how to address this.

Anyhow, figured something was up with Searle getting another start. Depending on how long he's out, mildly wonder if they kick him to the pen when he gets back.
