Possible Interest In Braden Looper

Braden Looper's numbers aren't eye-catching, but the free agent righty remains useful. The 35-year-old made at least 30 starts for the third consecutive season last year, logging 194.2 innings. He pitched to a 5.22 ERA with 4.6 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. Those numbers suggest that Looper isn't going to dominate, but could help teams win.

 

MLBTR was discussing Looper, who I had forgotten existed. While he was never very good as a starter, he did have a lot of success as a reliever for several years before making the conversion. I recall him saying he would like to play for the Cubs in the offseason. If he would be willing to accept something like a mil for the remainder of the season as a set up man, would he be worth it? It would be better than giving up any solid prospects for someone like Scott Downs when we really need a righty anyway.

I wouldnt. Sadly, Lou would probably use Chad Tracy as a set up man over Marshall, but Looper would probably be better than any of the other.

I don't understand how his numbers from last year could help any team. I could have hit a HR off of him last season.

Braden Looper was mediocrity defined as a reliever. 4 years ago. If they got him he wouldn't crack the Top 10 of best options to be in the pen.
