Dave Allen at Fangraphs has done a little series looking at the effects of swinging at the first pitch based upon Chipper Jones statement that he swings at the first pitch more often against good pitchers because he doesn't want to fall behind in the count. He concludes that if you have a good eye like Chipper it is advantageous to swing at the first pitch if it is in the zone against good pitchers.
