Cubs sign catcher Garrett Maines

Former Riverview High standout baseball player Garrett Maines has signed a free agent minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs. Maines, who played collegiately at Auburn and the University of Tampa, was a 2005 Times All-Suncoast first-team selection after leading Hillsborough County with nine homers and hitting .443 with 24 RBIs for the Sharks, breaking five single season school records his senior year. He was also a member of the 2007 UT team that won the Division II World Series.

As a Freshman: Got his first career hit in his second at-bat as a Spartan, doubling down the left field line against Catawba (2/10)...Notched his first career RBI on a bases loaded walk agianst Lynn (2/16)...Drove in a run against Harvard (3/12) with a sacrifice fly for his third career RBI.
